do make sure that the amp is unplugged of course....

Why do you say that?

Why do you say that?

because we enjoy your participation on this forum and would hate to read in the paper about someone getting electrocuted trying to unplug a fan in a pro amp....

Hey tubeguy44, just wanted to say "good for you" for not responding to flame bait threads. This is probably why so many more people are willing to listen to your observations about your gear than would listen to the other poster. Here are how my reactions went -
1) F3K gives his input + pic of Samson amp.
"Hmmm, that one looks interesting..."
2) Tubeguy says Samson amps are prone to failure.
"OK, just another thing to consider if going Samson route, maybe I won't have to worry as I probably won't drive the amp hard..."
3) F3K and Tubeguy take verbal shots at one another.
"Arrgh! Another great thread going up in flames..."
4) Tubeguy refuses to be flame-baited and stops the argument.
"Now THAT'S the reason I like to hear what Tubeguy thinks about various audio gear. Yes he sticks to his opinions very strongly (i.e. Klipsch is awesome/Pro Amps are awesome), but at least he stops before a great thread gets ruined."
5) F3K continues to bait.
"I'll definitely have to reconsider before giving credibility to any claims from someone like this..."

So, to all those who engage in flame wars, please take a step back and cool off - the only thing getting hurt by your comments is your own reputation among forum users. Relax, it's just a hobby!

To F3K - please just let this go. I'm sure there are people here who still are perfectly willing to consider Samson, you have difinitely contributed a new brand here that I wasn't even aware of. Yes I will take both your and tubeguy's comments about reliability into account, but most people here just need the one comment from both parties and will research the rest themselves or ask you directly for further input. Heck I was even considering Pyramid amps, although I hate their car-audio products. I am willing to say that although I don't like the brand for car audio I'll give their pro-audio stuff a look because they may be manufactured differently. After hearing responses from users about Pyramid-Pro products, they are no longer on my list, but I DID give them a chance just as I would give Samson a chance.

Anyway, enough rambling....sorry if anyone is offended, and a HUGE thank-you again to the people who have contributed their insight on this thread - it has been invaluable!

I run Crest Audio in my HT. Bought Crest on the recommendation of a bud of mine. He's been doing pro sound for 30+ years for acts from the James Gang, Joe Walsh, the Eagles, Bob Weir and Bonnie Raitt.

I asked him about Samson. His response: "Don't waste your money on that ****."
There is no winner in a subjective debate

He's a story. A long time ago a customer auditioned some
tweeters for his custom made sound system I was doing.

Not knowing brand names he just listened to whatever I threw at
him. Focal, Scanspeak, Peerless, etc., and the tweeter he liked
was the $4.00 Pyramid tweeter I got from the flea market. I had
him audition it as a joke and he loved it.

That is like a movie star saying "Don't buy Toyota, it's *********".

I'm sure big name acts want big brand names. I know if I had
money to burn I would do the same.... just because I can....

Sorry, but your analogy is way off the mark.

I often ask for opinions from friends that have first hand experience that I'm lacking. This guy has alot of knowledge about pro audio gear after many years in the business. I do not beleive he buys gear based on the whims of various band members.....

Besides, as someone who's owned and driven Toyotas since the 70s, I know that star is full of it.

you have to remember that a thread on this forum is like a child that grows up and moves away.....

after awhile you no longer have any control.....

but you have to admit that this thread has got alot of people interested in pro amplifiers for home use..... and that's a good thing!!!

cheers!

The child analogy? I think you are right, we are on page 17. /hahahahaha

I do agree on that one, which IS what we were after!!! A sSamson amp was going to be my first choice, then QSC, and Crown was actually last..I am super glad I made the decision I did.

THYLANTER!!!

GO TO YOUR ROOM!!!

(that boy.... always makes me yell!)

Just a comment on the reliability of pro amps. Something that may not be reliable enough for a touring band -- that tosses its gear around every day like bales of hay and has a ticked off audience if something fails -- may be perfectly reliable sitting in a rack in someone's home. A prime example is Behringer. Most touring pros consider their stuff way too flimsy but it works just fine for home users. Even the cheapest pro gear is pretty beefy by consumer standards.

I think that's what we've been saying all along as far as build quality goes..Even as far as removing the fans from amps..In a concert setting no way, home use probably won't break a sweat.

I'm going to attempt disconnecting my fans on the 402s. Will opening up the unit void my warrantee? Any warnings besides disconnecting the power cord from the wall?
Actually that's what I was worried about..I believe in the pic posted they are soldered directly to the board. Good luck , and keep us posted.

the fan leads are soldered on the board end but should be just plugged into the fan.....

Just keep your fingers and tools away from the big capacitors, and for that matter; everything else as well.

Ah, I see..That makes a big difference. Has anybody thought about usinf a "peltier cooler" ? I believe that's what they're called..A "little small device" that you could stick on the heat sinks that "electrically" cools the heat sink down..I hope I'm explaining all this right..I believe they are used on some video cards.

the peltier coolers generally need small fans on them or they will burn out very quickly.....

Okay, scrap that idea!!

Excellent post Captain, I could not have said that any better. And I agree completely with your assessment.

tubeguy, I want to thank you for your involvement here, and for being first class about it.

Just because its unplugged doesn't make it safe. Remember you have TWO hands. The biggest danger is when you touch ground with one and something hot with the other. Pay attention and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Good luck and keep us posted on how the amp behaves

What about being totally safe, and unplugging today, and then coming back and working on it tomorrow..Wouldn't all capacitors be discharged by then?

agree about the two hands issue..... the current can actually go right through your chest....

and unless you are dying already, i don't think you want electricity hitting your heart!!!

be careful out there!!!

About the fans, there are several things you can do.

1. Disconnect them. That's okay for light duty use. It helps to stand the amp on end so convective cooling flows the same direction as the fan. Face up if the fan blows out the front and vice versa.

2. Install a resistor in series with the fan. That will slow it down and make it run quieter.

3. Buy a quieter fan and install it. If it still isn't quiet enough, add a resistor.

Disclaimer: you're on your own and you didn't hear it from me. If you need more specific instructions, you don't know what you're doing and you shouldn't mess with it.

A properly designed amplifier will always discharge it's capacitors.
Give it a few minutes to be safe. No need to wait overnight at
the holiday inn...
