What does Comcast have to do with it? It's not being offered to Comcast, Directv or others in HD. Not Comcasts fault.
You might find it in HD on DirecTV channel 642.
It seems stupid, but CSN will only sell the SD version to broadcast channels, including one in Washington. They are keeping the HD version to themselves to give people a reason to watch the game (and commercials) on their channel.

CSN HD is available in this region on Verizon channel 576, DirecTV 642, Dish Network 424, and just about all cable providers. Channel finder is at www.csnwashington.com/pages/tv_listings

CSN = Comcast Sports Net

WRC transmitted the game on 4.2 in widescreen SD, which is the normal format for the regular NonStop programming on that channel.

This is the same scenario for skins pre season games as last year. Csn has the exclusive hd rights.

The picture of the redskins game was off center on 8-1. I had to adjust the vertical position on my TV upward to get rid of the annoying white dashes and a little to the left to center the picture. Is this an engineering issue that could be corrected at the local station?

Was it in SD?

Yes, it was 4:3 SD carried in their normal 720p broadcast. See my ranting above. smile.gif

The dashes were VBI data which is used for stuff like close-captioning. This is contained in the "off screen" area of SD broadcasts. Many (most?) people setup their HD TVs to have little or no overscan on HD channels, so you tend to notice this when viewing an SD signal which is carried in an HD broadcast. Back when everybody had old-fashioned TVs, there was about 10% overscan built in, so you never noticed this stuff.

Is it possible for an engineer at the local station make an adjustment to these broadcasts so the VBI data doesn't show in the future?

Speaking of overscan: While we are making the world safe for full-pixel / dot-by-dot viewing, it would be nice if channel 8 could fix their local news. The weather seems to have the top 20 pixels or so constantly showing the weather radar screen, no matter what is in the foreground, which makes watching their weather very distracting due to the radar "beam" constantly scanning across the top of the screen. Their studio shots also seem to have things which should be out of frame visible in the top few pixels (lights?).

The Ravens pre-season game is available to us tonight on Comcast SportsNet. In past years, we were outside of the Ravens territory and were blacked out. Looks like the NFL has relaxed its rules on pre-season TV games.

I was watching the SVU last night, and there were *horrible* compression artifacts in the opening minutes. Specifically, in the scene where the detectives are walking down the street, the WWBT encoder seems to have trouble keeping up with the movement of their faces against the background. I've attached screen grabs of the same frame from 1080i WWBT vs 480p Hulu . Note the WWBT sample looks much worse when viewed at full size on a 60" screen.

Is there any chance WWBT might try to improve their encoder settings to reduce motion related compression artifacts? It is quite embarrassing that 480p web video quality from Hulu is actually better than full broadcast 1080i from WWBT whenever there is any motion involved.

OTA Reception Changes

Over the last few weeks I have noticed major changes in the OTA reception from the local Richmond TV stations. I have moved my antenna to several new places and it makes no difference. Has something changed at the tower site near Chesterfield Town Center? I realize NBC12 comes from a tower at the station.

Station Before Now
6.1 100% 100%
8.1 90% 30-40% lots of breakups
12.1 60% 60%
23.1 100% 100%
35.1 100% 60-70%
57.1 100% no signal

Location – West End of Henrico

Thanks

Just moved from West Henrico to Montpelier in western Hanover County and observed the same thing HDtvRichmond posted. We haven't been able to receive 8.1, 8.2, 35.1, 35.2 or 57.1 at all in the last several days; two weeks ago we received all reliably with a one bay UHF antenna on the ground floor (did I say we "just moved"). Checked here for confirmation. I don't know if the TV station engineers are still paying attention or not, but we've seen the change that HDtvRicmond reports. We're upgrading antenna, but I'm not sure it will fix whatever changed. We have some trees in the path between Chesterfield tower and our house, but they haven't "budded out" yet. Weather had not previously had such a big impact, so I don't think that's it.

I am seeing the same issues out here in Hadensville. I get nothing when tuning to those channels. When I looked at the signal meter for those channels, I get 0.

Can't get 8 or 35 here in Western Hanover- can someone tell us why or what we can do??
Good morning,

In Charlottesville this morning for a wedding. The place we're staying in is on top of a hill. In addition to the locals, I'm seeing WTVR no problem. Meanwhile, no signal at all, as best I can tell, on WRIC or WRLH. (WCVE and WCVW have never been good in this town.) I've almost always seen the three (WRIC/WTVR/WRLH) come in together, and I see I'm not the only one seeing this same pattern which makes me think it could be a station issue rather than a reception issue here. Any thoughts?

There has been a major failure in the RF system (transmission) at the top of the tower near the base of the shared antenna fro these stations. They are all operating at reduced power. This will take some time to get resolved.
