I'm going to be moving to Coral Springs soon. I would like to know what everything thinks I should get for HDTV service and HSI.

There is Advanced Cable and ATT. No U-verse where I'll be living yet.

I have never dealt with Advance Cable (nor heard of them) but I started reading their reviews and its sounds like they are horrible. I'll be living in a condo so I may or may not be able to have satellite, it depends on the balcony/trees. ATT does offer their fastest DSL 6.0 at my address and its not much money for one year under promo.

What do you think? Is Advance really terrible or have they improved? How is ATT in the Coral Springs area?

I have Dish Network because I am an advid TV addict, their DVR is really great. Advanced Cable is the oldest cable supplier in Coral Springs and I had them before I went satellite. I wanted more channel choices.

For HSI I have ATT Uverse for both internet and home phones. Speed is really great.

I just moved to CS about 6 months ago. We have D* and used the movers connection and for HSI use Advanced. We used Comcast for internet in Memphis and honestly, I miss it. There is one HUGE feature to me that Advanced doesn't have, espn3. I have emailed and no one will respond to my emails. Other than that the service is fine. I work from home and was having multiple drop outs a day and someone came out to fix an issue at the box the next day. Since then no drop outs in 2 weeks. I have the 8 mb package and I was told by the tech 2 weeks ago they are going to roll something like a 10 and 15 mb package soon. When I signed up I got a new customer deal with covered the modem. After 12 months I have to pay a monthly fee for the modem (stupid) or go buy my own.

I've been happy with D*, been with them for 8 years now. If you can and decide to go with D* let me know and we can do the referral thing and save $100 off our bills.

Does ATT have espn3?

Thanks for the offer but I've been with Dish for over 10 years. Although they occasionally PMO with their rate hikes, I will stay put. Their HD offering pared with the best DVR out there is a life necessity for me.

I don't know about ESPN3 with Advanced, I left them a long while ago - Dish has it.

I combined my telecom costs: telephone/long distance & HSI and bundled them with ATT Uverse. So far so good, no loss of connection or dropped calls.

Can anyone comment on ATT DSL (NOT Uverse because I can't get it yet) and Advance Cable HSI? I want to set up an install or self-install for the day after I move in. I need to stay connected.

Are you allowed to buy your own modem with either service and what models do they allow?

I have Advanced Cable but I think I will be leaving them shortly as ATT DSL have a really good deals going on right now and they offer espn3. Advanced cables doesn't. Advanced Cable has been fine for me, but the lack of espn3 and the fact that I can get faster speeds at a lower cost even after the introductory offer with ATT makes that look more inviting. With my FedEx discount I never paid more than $35/month for HSI with Comcast but of course Comcast doesn't service CS.

My new customer offer from November included the modem, but after 12 months I either have to pay a monthly fee for it (stupid) or buy my own (stupider). It looks like with ATT the $100 charge is a one time upfront charge.

Anyone know who the DirecTV and Dish Network installers are in the area? How good or bad are they and will they provide a tripod at no cost? It looks like I can (thankfully) put a dish on my balcony (it cannot go on the roof or anywhere else outside) and use either service so I can avoid Advanced Cable.

Hmm. Maybe a better bet would be a post in one of the forums that deals with users of sat. systems. Forget which one(s) they are.

This forum deals with people who get signals OTA. There is a separate forum for cable (Comcast) users in So. Florida. The sat. forums cover users from all over.

I have D* and had it upgraded from the previous tenant's dish/setup in the house, but I didn't pay attention to any other name other than D* on the truck. All I know is the guy gave me some hookups and I made it worth his while. Then a couple of weeks later the supervisor came out to inspect the install. He did have to tidy something up but I was happy with them. This was going directly thru D*.

Tripod will be an additional cost. The installers vary, I have had private yahoos who didn't know squat, I have had Mastec, and I have had DirecTV crews with no visible affiliation markings. Call the provider, and they will send who they send, unless you contact a private installer.

What's up with WSVN and their software glitch that keeps the picture going to "postage stamp" picture mode? It's been happening VERY FREQUENTLY. Very annoying.

Did anyone hear that Advance Cable's contract is not being renewed in Coral Springs and Weston? I heard from someone in the know, today, that there service territory may be bought out by Comcast.
Anyone have any more information?

I have heard nothing of late. When Weston renewed AC's contract awhile back I thought it was set out in such a way as to make it virtually impossible for Weston to make a change. I have no idea about Coral Springs.

As a previous client of AC I have to believe that, if this is true, there will be a lot of happy people!

It looks like the monopoly contracts last 10 years. The last renewal was in 01.

I'm waiting for some press releases or something. I'd like to know that this is 100% true.

I would be happy as balls if Comcast bought out Advanced. Before I moved down here I have always used Comcast internet and rarely had a problem. Down here I constantly have internet drops, and working from home and using voip with internet drops is not a very good thing. Not to mention the lack of espn3. If this is true I hope it happens quickly. And I would be able to get my FedEx discount re-applied to internet.

This would be great news if Comcast bought Advanced Cable.

I thought Advanced Cable's contract ran thru 2013. I have been counting down the days till I can get rid of Advanced.

I pick up PBS on 2.1 and 42.1
42.1 comes in stronger but is noticeably less sharp than 2.1
Has anyone else noticed this?

Can't get 42.1 in Hialeah, but 2.1 (WPBT) is not much better. A couple of years ago, I complained about the blurry picture on Great Performances at the Met broadcasts, supposedly in HD. Someone from their tech area replied that they were not yet able to record their HD satellite feeds in HD, so they recorded them in SD and upscaled them to 1080i for later broadcasts. Until then, he said, no one else had complained.

Looks like this is still going on. These are unretouched, over the air screen captures from a recent broadcast. The one on top is from Miami's WPBT. Below is the same frame as broadcast on KERA from Dallas... Louder than words...

Both stations are multicasting...WPBT 2 has 3 channels, and WXEL 42 has 4 channels. Also, last time I checked WXEL's "HD" channel was being broadcast in 720p.

Hey guys, I just bought an antenna (Monoprice HDA-5700) and I'm not receiving any VHF channels, primarily WPLG 10.1 and WSVN 7.1. I am picking up 30 odd UHF channels. I haven't mounted the antenna yet, I just placed it on top of my TV and pointed it south-ish. I plan on mounting it in the attic. Will moving it to the attic fix my problem or is there something else I'm missing. I'm in Coral Springs. Thanks.

TVs emit interference. While it's not a sure thing that it will pull in WSVN/WPLG, moving the antenna away from the TV can only help matters.

I'm in Coral Springs also with an indoor antenna and can't get those. I can get 29 intermittently from WPB for FOX ota.

Most makers of so-called 'HDTV Antennas' ignore the fact that there are still some channels in the VHF Spectrum, and just build them for UHF reception.
Attic antennas have some drawbacks, outdoor roof top is best.
