The blinking yellow light is normal when you have the bulb set for quick restart. You can find a GLink cable here.

Second, the sets DISPLAY is 1920 x 1080 pregressive. They are 1080p. They, along with MOST other sets accept 1080i, interlace, or re-asse,ble it, to view the 1080p signal. be aware, that this only applies to 1080p sources, like HD DVD, not broadcast, as broadcast is 1080i, or 720p. No worries

Thanks for the input on the 56HM195 everyone! So this set won't be able to accept a 1080p signal via HDMI, or will it? Reason i'm asking is because the PS3 is coming soon and i'd like to output at 1080p from the system.

Pardon me for not going through all 223 pages of the thread , but do the XX96 series have the same amounts of bulb problems as reported with the XX95s?

This set replaces our 52" Toshiba set. I love it. Now just need a larger room to put it in. That or make my wife move some of her "stuff" out of the way.

The Toshiba site does not have the manual for this model posted yet. Any suggestions on where to get the manual?

Thanks for the tips on where to get the link.

No it won't, but that does not matter, as the set will interlace (reassemble) the 1080i signal into a 1080p signal, so there will be no difference for you

1. Turned the set off and the yellow lamp light is flashing. Can someone tell me why it is doing that? Didn't do it last night when I turned it off.
2. Where is the best place to order a Glink cable?

Thanks

Here's a link to download the manual for the 62HM116, which is the Costco version of the 62HM196 (exactly the same unit)...

I finally fot the set...yeah for me

A couple of question to some tha have this set.

1) On some of my HD channels I see a white line at the top of the screen. If I change the screen size to different settings it moves on the screen to the top of the picture. depending on the screen format.

It looks like this (of course the pattern is wrong) ..__..._____.....__......___..._

Is this white line normal..

2) When I look at the settings it always says the viewing is at 480...how do I change this to 720 or 1080.

look in the settings for the box. look at video ouput or something like that in the set up menu. You should be able to set what the cable box outputs somewhere in there. The TV is reporting only what it is reveiving.

You are connecting it to the HDMI or component input on the TV right?

Agree with gosawx.

The line you are seeing probably has moving portions in it similar to binary information. That is similar to VBI data that gets sent over the video signal on channels - that data is usually not seen because normally the video image is presented to the screen with that data outside of the viewable area.

Your cable box is probably outputing the video signal in a format that does not scale the image to hide this line. You should make sure the output of the cablebox is set to 1080i or 720p.

Thanks guys for your help...

I am not techincal at all.. but I will call the cable company to see what they can tell me by looking in at the setup.

I have an HDMI cable, but don't know where to plug this in the back of the TV and cable box. The connection is like a USB connection, but I don't see an equivlant behind the cable box.
do you have something that kinda looks like a printer connection? That is a DVI connector, you can get an adaptor to make that HDMI. How do you now have it connected to your set?
I will look tonight, thanks Gosawx
Just as a note:

HDMI to DVI converters result in a loss of color information. I would suggest picking up a DVI to HDMI cable instead of using an adaptor.

I tried played Smash Bros. Melee on a 62HM196 and can confirm that there is a minute amount of lag, even with game mode. However, the lag is VERY small, and almost unnoticeable. If I hadn't played Smash Bros on a standard TV before playing it on the Toshiba, I wouldn't have noticed the lag, but because I had a normal TV to compare it to, there was definitely some lag there.

The lag was very, very minute, though, and even smaller with Game Mode turned ON. If you aren't the type to notice lag, or if you don't play timing-based games, you probably won't notice the lag at all, so I'd recommend buying it. It looked spectacular, and its price tag is unbeatable. But if you're anal about HDTV lag times, you might want to head to your local Best Buy or equivalent and ask them if you can plug your game console into it before dropping $2,000 to get it.

Well, less then a year after replacing the bulb in my 46hm84 it blew again. We don't even watch that much tv...

My 52HMX94 went into the service center on Monday for the dust problem I've been having. The service tech called Toshiba to see what he could do about it and Toshiba said that the light engine from this model has defects that allow dust in and causes the "smudges" on the screen. Toshiba is sending them a new light engine to install.

Here I thought they would only clean it again and try to seal up the light engine (optical block is what they told me last time) better... again...

I wanted to post this in case anyone else is having the same issues with the blue smudges (dust) with their tv. Hopefully this cures the problem.

Cheers

Hello all,

I have recently noticed a humming noise coming from my Toshiba 52HMX95. I do not recall this noise in the past. It seems particularly loud. There does not seem to be any problem with the picture. I notice when I turn the tv off, they green light blinks and the humming continues. After about 5-10 minutes the green light turns off and the humming stops. Is the humming coming from the fan? Is it possible for the fan to be making more noise? I notice that many problems with the tv stem from the number of hours used. Is there an easy way for me to check how many hours my tv has been used? Thanks for the help.

Just wanted to drop in and let you all know that I've been really lucky with my 46hm95. I got it almost a year ago (11/20/2005) and I am still on my original lamp to this day. I just checked my hours and it showed 2168 hours. My serial number does qualify me for the extended warranty on the original bulb though. Of course by posting this I'm sure I am jinxing myself and the bulb will go out any day now but still over 2000 hours is quite good compared to most of the folks who bought these tv's last fall.
Hi, just wondering how you check the hours on your bulb? I can't find anything in my manual and am curious how many hours I have on my original bulb. Thanks for the help.

52HM95 SLOW RESPONSE........Any of you guys experience this???

I can't stand the TV anymore. It is sooooo slow changing channels that channel surfing is like impossible......esp digital and HD channels. Also if I hit a button for volume, tv guide, or menu, the TV doesn't repond to it for like 2-3 seconds. The lag is annoying like the TV processor can't keep up. Is this normal ??

I've had this issue on and off. It seems to get worse after a power reset of the TV with a lag of up to 5 seconds. After a few weeks of no resets it seems to be fine. It is annoying.
When you say it seems to be fine, you mean there is NO LAG? The tuner has always been PAINFULLY slow changing channels. HD channels take even more time to tune in. I get around this by using the TV guide instead of channel surfing.

But now, volume, menu, just about anything I press, even to change picture settings from sports to movie, etc, well it takes about 3-4 seconds for the TV to do anything.

Yes, no lag. It is real annoying when the lag is present since it is sporatic, but generally now it's fine.

As for channel surfing, when I got the TV it took some time to get used to the delay in changing channels compared to my old CRT. That's just the nature of these digital TVs where it needs to decode and assemble the video before presenting it to the screen.

Shome,
While I don't have any suggestions I can tell you that I am having the same issue with my 56MX195. It does it when you display a 100% gray scale pattern or like you say during a completely black scene as well as when you turn it off and it is in the cooling cycle. I took pictures of mine late at night in total darkness. I would like to calibrate this pig but it's a waste of time right now. The picture still looks great because during normal viewing you can't notice it. I had the repair guy out today and he wants to ship it a couple hundred mile to the main repair site because he has no clue how to replace the light engine. I have zero confidence that it will come back repaired and in the same condition it is now. I would like to hear a few more folks with the same problem to convince me I should take the chance. Only one more month on the warranty too.

The DirecTV installer set me up with an HD dish and an HR20 DVR unit yesterday. The TV is a 46HM84.

So on the Toshiba settings, I set the display to 0 (Natural), because it seems like the HR20 wants to set the display format.

Then on the HR20 display settings, there is a choice for Native On/Off. Not sure what to set here. It seems it works with either setting, but when switching channels from a 16:9 HD broadcast to a non-HD 4:3 broadcast, I need to press the "Format" button on the HR20 remote to display the 4:3 so it fills the screen height-wise, and has the vertical bars on the sides so the picture isn't stretched. (There is also an HR20 display setting for 4:3, which I have set to "Pillar", instead of stretched or cropped).

The other thing I notice that I HOPE is not bad for the TV, is that when changing channels, the TV almost has an epileptic seizure for a second or so, I guess determining which mode to display!

The Toshiba is 14 months old now, and so far no problems at all. I've had the SD DirecTV hooked up until now using S-video cables (because the old Tivo unit had no component output). I use component cables on the DVD player. The HR20 is hooked up with component cables.

Anyway, yesterday the first time I switched to ESPN Sportscenter in HD, I have to say that was the best-quality image I have seen on the TV in the 14 months of owning it! I am definitely pleased with the picture quality.

Hi guys- just had to say hi. I feel so 'normal' here.

I'm a proud owner of the 62hm95 ; someone was asking about the experience (can't find the post, or else I'd directly quote reply).

I'm very happy with it. I have no cable or dish, just Over The Air HD($130 antenna). I'm no TV guru ; but I have to say I love it.
It is connected to my HT media center computer. Gigs of videos, pictures and music and of course record any decent tv shows. I don't miss cable. In fact, I think I'd watch more of the OTA HD than regular cable. It's so pretty.
pc rig specs :
3.0ghz p4 (socket478) ,512mb ram 433mhz (not paired ), ATI HDTV pci card, ATI 550 theater for SD & FM tuner, 500gb drive space (2x250gb striped), envy 24 sound card.

note : using the NVIDIA pure video decoding software made a VERY noticeable difference. (dvd's especially). Like software upscaling if you will. The Nvidia software also support digital passthrough. It's pretty awesome to experience. My yamaha htr-5280 recieve does all the audio decoding... true 5.1 seperation.
Audiophiles may not think too much of it; but it's great to see all the technology going to very good use.

that's enough out of me.
It's been fun reading the last 10 pages of this thread (I figured I should start in october?).

Regards,
John

I'm shopping for a bigger television and I need some help. Right now the toshbia hm196 catches my eye but I see other models that size that are cheaper. for example the hm195 looks like its older but still displays the 1080p I'm looking for. Any real difference between the two??
WOAH there - just check the other postings and you'll see why the HM195 is cheaper - it uses the 'bad' lamp for starters and it has one HDMI input (if i'm correct). I have the HM196 and didn't do enough research to know it won't accept 1080p inputs: so if you want true HD at the best possible resolution, then you won't want either. I suggest waiting another month when prices should fall more and other models from Toshiba that DO have 1080p input are available for the same price (or other mfgs) -...OR ...I'll sell you mine!
