Once 26 goes full power, it is also likely 26 will be more watchable. If Fox was broadcasting on 2 instead of 44, the signal would easily curve around Slide to reach Carson. This is why I have been complaining that Fox has not fought hard enough to get lower on the dial.

I didn't mention anything about quality of the channels. Although, 27 has always been at least as good as any at 13 or below. Analog 4,5,15 I can't get at all. 52, which is 4 and 29 which is 5 come in good enough to watch. But I only watch those on the analog tv in the bedroom. I watch only the digitals on the 65", in the HT.

I was told last Nov, by an engineer at 11, that they were waiting for approval from the FCC to erect a digital translator on Slide. Oviously, they couldn't get up to Slide until after the snow had melted on top anyway. Now if they are still waiting, I don't know. And I also don't know if that statement was even the truth. or what channel it will be.

I just reread my post and realize it did not convey what I was thinking. I meant to show that 9 vs. 8 is a great comparison for digital vs. analog reception. The frequencies are close and the powers are reasonable for the Reno DMA. If someone gets a good picture for 8 they will easily be able to lock 9. If someone gets a poor picture for 8, they may or may not be able to lock 9. What will never happen is someone getting a good picture to 8, but not be able to lock 9. The subjective factor is what people consider a good picture.

Is KRXI 11.1 (Ch. 44) off the air, or did my antenna just take a dump?

I live in Red Rock, and FOX is the only station I can pick up...now it's not there...

Same at my house. Looks like Fox 11.1 is temporarily dead.

Thanks for the confirmation!

Hi all,

I recently purchased a new TV that has a built in QAM/ATSC tuner. Unfortunately I can't received any of the HD locals with an indoor antenna and I don't really want to install an outdoor antenna.

I recently called Charter and they told me they encrypt all their locals and I wont be able to receive any of them. Can anyone confirm that is actually the case? They want to charge me a monthly $1.50 cable card rental, plus $3.00 for the local HD channels and about $16 for basic cable. $22 a month is a bit excessive imo for basically 4 or 5 local HD channels (doesn't include ESPNHD,HDnet, ect.) They wont offer just the local HD channels without also getting basic cable.

I'm currently a DirecTV customer and I'm tempted to upgrade to an HDTivo unit but they're currently charging $549 after a $100 mail in rebate and they probably wont be offering the locals in HD for about another year or so.

I live in South Suburban area and I receive six HDTV stations very clearly. I use Terk HDTVi indoor antenna and it works well. I got it from Good Guys. It should be available from Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1081899793854) or Circuit City. Make sure your antenna has BOTH VHF and UHF because CBS (ch 2.1, RF 13), NBC (ch 4.1, RF 7) and ABC (ch 8.1, RF 9) operate in VHF band. Other stations, PSB (ch 5.1, RF 15), Fox (ch 11.1, RF 44), UPN (ch 21.1, RF 20) operate in UHF. WB (ch 27.1, RF 26) still has problems with their digital broadcast and uses UHF.

If your TV has two coax inputs, make sure the antenna is connected to the correct coax input. My TV with built-in HDTV tuner has two inputs, one for antenna and other for cable. I have noticed that newer TVs come with Digital Cable Ready built-in (requires Cable Card from cable company) HDTV tuner but it was not clear whether they include OTA ATSC tuner. It might be the case with your TV.

Sounds like a big rip-off from Charter. I think they are not allowed to charge anything that can be received for free using OTA.

Imperium,
The Charter customer service rep is wrong. Currently, Charter Reno broadcasts local HD in the clear. All you need is a QAM tuner and basic cable service. As much as I hate to recommend Charter, the easiest thing is to dump DirecTV and get the Charter DVR. Since Reno is a smaller city, it will not be the first to get HD local in local via satellite. The DirecTV HDTivo does not include QAM, so you would still need an antenna to record.

Thanks for the heads up about some channels operating in VHF. I purchased a Samsung indoor antenna a few weeks back and couldn't receive any HD channels. After I read your post, I checked Best Buy's web site and sure enough the antenna only supports UHF. Since I was heading to BB anyway, I picked up the Terk antenna you mentioned.

The good news is that apparently the Terk is a much better HD antenna than the Samsung. The bad news is I can only receive fox11 on 43-3. I can also receive a handful of SD channels but reception is very poor.

I live in the South-West region off of 4th st, near a few mountains, so I guess fox is it. I'm not sure it's worth keeping the antenna for only one channel, but that channel sure looks nice in 1080p.

Thanks for your input.

I had a feeling the CRS was feeding me a line. Anything to get a few extra bucks I guess.

I'm very reluctant to dump Directv primarily because I love NFL Sunday Ticket and I believe DTV offers a better selection of channels at a better price. I've also had some bad experiences with cable companies in the past (not Charter) and I'm reluctant to give them my business.

I think I may just get basic cable for a while and save up for the HDTivo unit. DTV is supposedly getting into HD in a big way in a year or so, so I'd rather wait for them. I was able to receive fox 11 in HD with the Terk antenna Peter recommended and that really gave me HD lust

If you plan to keep D, I recommend continuing to try with a antenna instead of Charter. Even when D adds Reno HD LIL, an antenna will likely still be cheaper with a better picture. There has been a lot of speculation that DBS providers will charge yet another HD fee for locals. Can you see Slide, Red Peak, and Peavine from your house? What color does antennaweb.org list for the stations? Red is borderline for an indoor antenna. For a local antenna retailer, try sandyselectronicparts.com They are more knowledgeable than BB.

Anyone with charter/moxi unit notice KRNVSD missing from channel line-up and no HD for part of the NASCAR race? Also was there signal loss/tiling for TNTHD and CinemaxHD?

I'm sitting here thinking about calling CHARTER again [third time] mostly because of CinemaxHD. It's not my MOXI box because I have the standard HD box too.And both freeze the picture while the sound keeps going and at times lose's picture completely.Of course when they show up signal strength is fine. It's just intermittently mostly at night.

Also forgot to mention.Turned on "THE MUMMY" on TNTHD this weekend the first battle scene nothing but tilling!

I'm looking for network HDTV in Incline Village. I don't really need the Reno feeds and I understand that OTA is hit or miss.

Has anyone obtained waivers from Dish or DTV to get the NY or LA feeds? THanks.
Some guy in Phoenix recently got waivers, and I applied with D* to get them, but haven't heard yet.
There was a recent law change where you can only get distant network service in a time zone ahead if you have satellite in your RV or boat. A person might drive their RV to the East coast and be viewing NY channels legitimately. The Reno stations have a lot of holes in their coverage, which would not be cost effective to fill OTA. I expect them to continue granting waivers until Reno HD LIL is up to fill those holes via DBS, at which point the waivers will expire. When you get the waiver you view Reno SD and the option for an HD affiliate in the same or later time zone for an extra fee.

The San Francisco HD stations should be available mpeg4 from D within the next year. Most Reno DMA people would prefer to watch SF stations over LA. There are some people that make their Nevada home primary for taxes, but their SF home primary for DBS. This gives them the SF stations via DBS and Reno stations OTA. Your primary residence determines DBS DMA. This seems a little tax audit risky to me. For people that want to watch SF over LA considering purchasing equipment, it makes sense to wait for the D mpeg4 boxes to come out.

Edit: D may not have started charging extra for the LA HD feeds yet.

I finally decided to start a physical club and admit that HDTV has become a hobby.

Anyone heard anything more about when they're going to install the new high powered antenna for KREN (WB)? I'd really like to get Smallville in HD.

Have you tried e-mailing them? Their web site is www.kren.com.

Its been my experience that sending emails to Reno stations produces nothing. Either, they don't read them, or at least, they don't send a reply back, and take no notice of whatever the subject of the email was.

Anyone know if any new antennas are up on slide? I'm in Dbl Diamond so I get KTVN-DT, KOLO-DT, KRNV-DT, KREN-DT.

I would love to get KRXI-DT (fox) and KNBP-DT (pbs) but last time (at least a month ago) I moved my anteena, no matter where I was, I couldn't get either

Any news there? Anyone else in South Reno getting these channels?

Fox 11 is on Peavine, not sure about PBS. I was told a year ago that Fox was putting an antenna on Slide, but that looks like that was bs. Being I still can't get Fox HD and Slide is in between me and Peavine.

I receive FoxHD from Directv (channel 89), however, I have not watched it, so it may not be the local station, I just received it.

I have written e-mails to KRNV and KOLO and they have been very responsive. I have not tried e-mailing KREN since I do have an interest in their shows.

I live in South Suburban area (Broken Hill Rd) and I receive digital signals from all seven local stations perfectly. Sometimes the signals are weaker during storm. I get HDTV from KTVN (CBS), KRNV (NBC), KNPB (PBS), KOLO (ABC), KRXI (FOX), KAME (UPN) and SDTV from KREN (WB). I use Terk HDTVi indoor VHF/UHF antenna.

I am surprised you don't get FOX. The signal is pretty strong. Even though KRXI-DT is in UHF band (RF Channel 44) the signal is strong enough to pick up with VHF antenna (two dipoles).

Hello Reno residents,

I bought Logitech Harmony 880 remote control. This is THE best remote control I have ever own. I can program it to do just about anything I want it to do. I can even upload local station logo images to Harmony remote control for Favorite channels. I was able to find local station logo images for every station except KAME-TV UPN-21. www.foxreno.com does not have it at their web site. I found similar UPN 21 logos from other cities but I prefer Reno UPN-21 logo.

Thanks,
Peter

Never mind. I figured a different way to get KAME-TV UPN-21 logo. Using HTPC with MCE 2005, I recorded a UPN program for about a minute displaying a whole screen of their logo. Burned this one minute show to DVD. Using Pinnacle Studio 9 software, I imported the burned minute DVD program and grab a frame and converted it to JPG image and finally uploaded this JPG image to my Harmony Remote Control. Now my remote control is complete. Hope I won't get sued for using their copyrighted logo.

Peter, looking north from my house, I think the problem is that there is Rattlesnake Mountain directly to my north. I would suspect this is blocking whatever signal would reach me. Since you are on the other side of S. Virginia you are unaffected by this. Maybe fox can put a repeater on Rattlesnake ;-)

Once I brought my HTPC (MCE 2005 PVR) to my friend's house who lives in Double Diamond to test for digital signal reception and his 60" Sony Grand Wega LCD rear projection TV. If I remember correctly, his location was able to receive digital signals from every station. My friend wanted to test it before he buys ATSC tuner. His TV does not have built-in ATSC tuner. His location is probably farther away from Rattlesnake mountain than yours. He lives on Lucente Way.
