In May 2011 someone in the VideoHelp forum asked if the program was infected:

Some small, not well known, antivirus programs detected it. This is almost certainly because Mark used PESpin to pack his program. Some malware does the same thing, so some antivirus software notices the PESpin packer and thinks it has found malware. In reality, the antivirus software has only found a false positive.

The current copy on mwilczyn's website has the following MD5 hashes:
mpeg2repair.zip 063ab184b86dc6919dbcf69482ff9f07
mpeg2repair.exe b57f9e302cf50195ab2917840366dda9

Those of us with a copy of the 2/15/2007 version of mpeg2repair that we downloaded years ago could post the MD5 values for the ZIP and EXE files for comparison purposes.

Easy ways to get the MD5 hash values include either of the following tools:
1.) md5sums (command line): http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/md5sums/
2.) HashTab (Windows GUI and Mac GUI): http://www.implbits.com/HashTab.aspx

This should be run as a command-line. Only one argument needed, the input file. mpeg2repair will automatically add a .txt to the filename.

A lot of the code I wrote dealt with possible error messages or sudden closing of the window. I also made sure you can run more than one instance of this script.

You should also be sure to get the latest version of AutoIt here: http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/index.shtml

I suggest using the AutoIt compiler to convert the .au3 file to an executable - but make sure you have the CONSOLE option set!

There is nothing not normal about the program.

You should post about getting a corrected version of Ad-aware.

A number of anti-malware tools do this with mpeg2repair because it uses a special executable "packer" to further obfuscate its code and reduce the size of the executable. Many pieces of malware do the same, which is why some tools flag all such executables as malware.

There is no other release of mpeg2repair that does not use the executable packing and the tool is now abandonware. You're best bet is to go into AdAware's options and whitelist mpeg2repair and also contact the company and tell them that mpeg2repair is not malware, and provide them it via e-mail so that they can analyse it.
