I have the same problem with the green and am on my 4th. tv. Just like you it seems to get worse with each new set. Hitachi will not admit to a problem and tells me to contact an authorized service center. The CC tech that did take a look at the tv said it was dirt in the light engine. This was confirmed in a telephone conversation with the Hitachi authorized rep in the Houston area even though he did not actually see the tv like the CC tech did. I just cannot believe that Hitachi is ruining their reputation due to quality issues.
I would like however to give credit to Circuit City. They have been ever so helpful in trying to resolve this issue. They are special ordering a new TV from a completely different lot and we will see what happens.
I'm very discouraged with Hitachi as well... on set #3, and green problem occurs in bottom-left quadrant. To make a long story short, it's past my 30 days now for returning the set w/ CC, and with my recent service call (made since I purchased the extended warranty with CC) it took CC five days to find someone to look at the set, and their lead time to look at the set is 2.5 weeks!
To make matters worse, my phone call with the service rep (an independent service rep, not CC or Hitachi) when setting up the appt went something like this -- after describing the problems his response was "you shouldn't expect to have a consistent color across the entire screen, especially when trying to display a pure white image; tv's costing far more than the Hitachi exhibit this, and this is usually within factory specs for the unit". Also, as reported by others as well I have some "smudges" on the microdisplay interior, and his comment was "this shouldn't happen since the microdisplay is sealed at the factory, and this kind of problem would have been caught at the factory"! In other words, I expect that his visit will show "all is fine" with this set!
