For 480i disks, I would bet that the HD players will not be as good as the 59ai or 3910 (except for maybe the top-of-the-line HD players, in the $3000+ territory). Of course, they'll outperform the 59ai and 3910 if you compare a true HD DVD played on an HD player versus an upscaled 480i version of the same movie on the 59ai or 3910. But for your current 480i library, I bet you'd be better off playing them on a 59ai or 3910. Again, nobody will know for sure until they're actually available.
My dealer went to the line show in Oakland, CA this week and they said the 2500 and the C950 will be out in about two weeks (so May 1st seems correct). They were taking orders on both and he showed me the glossy brochure they gave him which he says is what he waits for from Yamaha before he believes anything is real.
Got an email from Greg (?) at Vann's and was told that they expect the S2500 in by the first week of May. Hopefully it's true. Too bad we won't be able to buy the unit via the Internet.
So....the S2500 seems like it will retail for ~$800...and I'm seeing Pioneer DV-59avi's online for ~$700 nowadays....so remind me again why the Yammie is attractive? Do we expect it will show up for , say $600 online anytime soon?
I thought one of the Yamahas that had the Farouja chip got really great reviews in secrets--s1500?. I thought Kris said that they got it right using that chip? Maybe I'm mistaken.

Actually, the Secret's review was very mediocre. It had macroblocking, black crush, and failed many of the tests. It scored only a 63.
Originally posted by Kevin C Brown The Yamaha has Faroudja, which also means it will suffer from macroblocking depending on your display. No macroblocking with the Pioneer.
Is it unreasonable to believe that the inordinate delay in the release of the S2500 was to correct the macroblocking problem with the Faroudja chip?

Yes, an unreasonable assumption considering every single Faroudja player has MB potential (I can't believe Yamaha somehow figured it out when nobody else has). Also, the delay is not unexpected (Yamaha has delayed the release of every single DVD player they have come out with over the past several years).

You maybe thinking of the 2300 MKII, which I believe did very well in the Secrets review. Actually I own one and have been very happy with the performance, both video and audio.

It's a pity that there's so little information about this player out there. The 59avi, by all accounts, is still the player to beat in the <$1000 price range, at least.
Zoro if we belive you you just ordered the samsung and 1000s other dvd players which is to long to list,I dont know how or why you would order every dvd player on earth because it sure seems you have.
The 2500 *will* have macroblocking, depending on the display. The Pio doesn't. I also bet the Pio will have a better analog audio output stage. But if you get the Yamaha, let us know.

He does demo just about everything. I hooked him up with a q50 a year or so ago(I think he kept it 2 or 3 days) and he lined me up with a 59avi. BTW, He had a couple Yammy X1's at one time too.
Bought the Pioneer 59AVI at HiFi House in Abington, PA. for a hundred bucks under the current list.
Sorry Yamaha, I love your products, but waiting more than six months after the originally scheduled release date is very poor business. Especially since the Pioneer unit now retails for a grand.
