I am considering getting either the TOSHIBA - 72MX195 72-IN 1080p HD DLP Projection TV or the SONY 70" XBR® Grand WEGA 3LCD Rear Projection HDTV
KDF-70XBR950.
If you own or seen either of the above, please help me with your opinion.
Thanks Fellas

I live in West Middlesex and have recently been playing around with receiving OTA digital signals. I don't have an HD television and am just interested in getting clear pictures using my outdoor antenna and standard tv. I've tried a few receivers already with mixed success (Accurian; Samsung 451; US Digital; Sylvania SRZ3000) Had most success with the US Digital receiver (grabbed both Pittsburgh and Cleveland). Anyone have recommendations on receivers they have had success with in receiving both Pittsburgh and Cleveland channels OTA?

I'm having a little trouble here, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I live in Newton Falls. In the last couple days, I've tried a Terk TV5 and a Phillips MANT510. Both of them being indoor HDTV Antennas. I'm trying to get the locals through my TV. I'm plugging both of them into a H10 Direct TV Receiver and using the Scan for channels option to find the channels I can get. After playing around with both of them, I was only able to pick up 21.1 (NBC), 21.2 (WB) and occasionally 33.1 (ABC, although I never got much of a picture). I was kind of surprized that's all I got. According to Antennaweb I should be able to get 27 (CBS) also. They are all just under 20 miles away and are in the same general area (between 120 and 127 on the compass location).

It's pretty flat around here, there's not alot of trees near my house and I'm less than 20 miles from the towers. I'm surprized that I can't get all the channels with a little more success. Like I said, 21 was the only one that came in most of the time. Actually in look at antennaweb, I would also like to get Fox 62. I'm also only 20 miles away from it's tower and it's compass location is about the same as the rest, why does it show up in the violet at the bottom while the others are at the top in red?

Am I gonna have to go to an outside antenna to do this? I don't exactly have alot of space and mounting on the roof could be a problem. Could anyone suggest another type of indoor antenna that may be more powerful. If not, can I get a specific type of outdoor antenna to use? This is my first time trying this HD stuff and there are alot of terms here that I'm still learning.

Thanks for any help.

Just one bit of information....you won't get WKBN Ch. 27's digital channel as it is not yet on the air and no one seems to know just when it will begin transmitting.

Welcome to AVS, Jerry! I recognize your name from TCF...

One note - "FOX 17/62" is a pair of low-power analog stations. 62 is licensed to Youngstown and 17 to Masury PA. The 62 tower may be in the same general direction as 21/27/33, but the power on both 17 and 62 is a lot lower. Heck, where you are (Newton Falls, I presume), you wouldn't likely even GET the 17 half of the pair due to full-power WDLI in Canton on the same channel. (How they squeezed THAT in, I have no idea!)

As far as the DT goes, WFMJ-DT 20 is the only station with a reasonably high power level. WYTV-DT 36 is, if I remember right, about half the power of WFMJ-DT. As noted in the message above mine, WKBN-DT isn't even on yet.

I'd heartily recommend an outdoor antenna if you can swing it. With enough firepower, you might even get the Cleveland and/or Pittsburgh stations, at least some of them. You're obviously farther away from Parma than you are from I-680 and South Ave. in Youngstown (the closest thing Y-Town has to an "antenna farm"), but at very least an outdoor stick would get you reliable reception out of your home market.

Does anyone know when WEAO/WNEO will start the HDTV transmissions again? What's been the delay?

They tell me that they are waiting for upgraded software to interface the automation. PBS requires the stations to insert their own "breaks" in between the programs and 45/49's system cannot handle that.... until they are able to insert, no HD.

I live in Newton Falls as well, and there are times I can pick up WJW-DT with an indoor antenna. I have to move my antenna to a window facing the way of the signal however. A outdoor antenna would probably work better.

As for WYFX-LP channel 62, good luck. That signal is so weak, I can only pick up a fuzzy picture. I actually pick up WJW 8 from Cleveland with a picture as good as the 62 signal.
Is WYTV-DT 36 operating with full power yet? It never seems to lock it in. WFMJ-DT 20 locks in around 95% I know there power level is lower than WFMJ-DT 20. I just don't know why there signal is so weak. I get 4 stations from Cleveland some of the times too and all Pittsburgh, except WTAE. I need an ABC station to see the Super Bowl next Sunday. WTOV is working to get the ABC feed. I hope they can work something out.

Hi guys, My parents just purchased a 42 lcd with cablecard. They live in Hermitage and have Adelphia. I don't know much about cable card. What do they need for digital/hd. Does the cable company have to come to the house and insert the card? Thanks

So is the Youngstown WB station going to be part of the new CW network?

For that matter what will happen with 43 and 55 out of Cleveland?

We hope to continue our affiliation with the new CW network, however it's too soon to tell. Right now they're working on the bigger markets (like Cleveland). I'm sure we'll issue a statement once a deal is struck. In the mean time, all of us will continue to play "What-If".

I'd be surprised if you guys don't keep it, as there is no in-market UPN affiliate in Youngstown.

I'd put my money on 43 getting the CW network. 55 will go back to being a "family oriented" station.

Can anyone help me. Since wtov channel 9 out of steubenville carriers mostly all the west virginia mountaineer games and i am a big fan i made an indoor dipole that works well upstairs and recieves the analog one ok. Would i be better off trying to get an hd reception downstairs or how could i improve my analog reception thanks guys
post #167 of 1919
i also have another question. I can recieve wtov decently downstairs on my hd. But not the digital wtov feed. Why if i can recieve and watch pretty decently the analog i cannot recieve the digital.

The digital versions of CH 7 & 9 are in the UHF band (I think one of them is on either 53 or 57), so any antenna that gets the analog station fine might not be able to get the digital.
More likely, I believe the power for WTOV and WTRF's DT stations may not be at full blast at this time.
i hope that there was a way to recieve wtov-dt here without an outside antenna becasue my neighborhood doesn't allow them. Any suggestions maybe i could build a big copper one.
Your neighborhood has no legal way of preventing you from putting an antenna on your roof. It is your legal right and cannot be taken away.

Here is a link to the FCC that explains the law that Steve is referring:

As for indoor antennas, I have found that aluminum siding causes OTA signals to degrade to the point where indoor antennas can only be used aimed out a window (and hopefully the wiindow is in the correct direction). I live in Parma, where all the Cleveland transmitters are located. I can't wait for winter to be over so I can finally put up an outdoor antenna.

As far as pulling in the Steubie stations you would definitly need an outdoor antenna (I presume you are in the Youngstown DMA). I had an Uncle in Columbiana - On top of the Youngstown locals he got the steubie stations down on his farm (along with most of the Cleveland and some Pittsburgh stations). He had a tall tower on the side of his house.

I believe WTOV-DT, channel 57 is at full power....I get a good signal from them here in Canton. WTRF-DT, channel 32 is still on very low power and cannot be received much beyond the Wheeling area. Their engineer says full power is coming "soon" but exactly when "soon" is ?

If your in Canton your so much further than me and you can pick up wtov. I am only 47.5 miles away according to antenna web. Heres my plan radioshack seels 70ft copper wire for 7 bucks. What if i get two packs and use alligator clips to clip it to the coax. I am doing that now and it works pretty good for only a small dipole that i used copper wire to build but having to 70ft pieces of copper wire.

This is UHF you are trying to reveive, not short wave. The copper longwire antenna you propose will not help you get 32 or 57. You need a "Yagi" style UHF antenna, which is a highly directional antenna designed for the UHF band.

Antennas direct, one of the advertizers here on the AVS forum is a good place to start.

Hey Shark, which indoor antenna do you have? I've experimented with a few different ones and I can get 21 everytime and 33 occasionally.

Cool. Fingers are crossed and praying they made the choice to implement 5.1 audio. Please, please, please.

I wonder what kind of coverage their signal will provide. I get WFMJ great and 33 analog ok and once in a while their digital signal.
