Youngstown, OH - HDTV - Page 51

Oh, I can't wait! My DVR is recording on 27.2 right now. Jack Bauer in semi-HD!

Great to watch 24 in 720p -- way to go Tom...
Maybe I spoke too soon, so far Letterman looks really bad.

Tom- How does it stand up with rapidly changing scenes? I wonder if it can sustain with auto racing on one and something equal on the second channel. Are you settting for a minimum bitrate on one 27.1... Daytona 500 always having plenty of bandwidth during the race and starving 27.2?
Fox may look better because it comes at 720p from the network, rather than being side-converted from 1080i at the station as has happened with WKBN.

Well, I watched 24 last night, and I thought it looked... pretty good. It was definitely better than what I've been watching the last few weeks, and kudos to the Fox network for not cluttering their screen with snipes and bugs! I didn't see any snipes or bugs anywhere!

Fast moving action had a bit of a blur to it, and the picture was not as "crisp" as I've become accustomed to seeing OTA HD, but overall, I was pleased with the picture on my 37" Olevia set. I flipped over to WKBN, and it looked equally less crisp, but not "bad".

Personally, if this is the only solution for getting me a FOX-HD feed OTA, I'm OK with the reduced quality on WKBN. I watch both WKBN and WYFX equally, and I'd much prefer being able to see the Fox primetime shows in semi-HD vs. no HD at all.

IMHO.

Channel 27 & 17/62 are still at 720P tonight. I have a Samsung 52a650, and 27.1 always looked outstanding at 1080i on it.

It is nice to see Fox in HD for the first time. However, to me NCIS only looked a little better than the feed from Directv. Haven't noticed any drop-outs of sound.

Even though I have satellite, I like the OTA HD feeds better. I want to get the Directv OTA box for the DVR. Ideally for me, I would like to see NBC, CBS, ABC broadcast 1080i with the HD feeds for the sub-channels be fed to the satellite (which means the OTA feeds would be SD).

BTW, it was asked before, why isn't CBS and FOX Youngstown in HD on Directv?
It is nice to have WYFX in HD, however I have to say the quality downgrade on WKBN-HD is upsetting. Anytime there is motion the picture gets REALLY soft and loses all definition. This is both on antenna and Comcast cable.

This is great that you've been able to send the signal out but without boosting the quality I'm afraid it's all for naught.
I have noticed very bad quality on 27.1 since running the 2 "higher" definition signals together. I applaud the effort to get a better fox signal out to the viewers, but I think the CBS side took a major hit. Every time a scene changes, the image goes completely out of focus for a half second or so. That becomes quite hard to watch after a while. I haven't noticed this on the fox signal, but haven't watched it as much as the CBS signal. I also assume since they are trying to squeeze fox hd on 27.2, that there is no chance that 17/62 will ever be going digital. Again, I applaud the effort, and it is appreciated. On a side note, Dish announced that Youngstown locals are supposed to launch in March, any chance of Fox Hd on Dish?
Just saw the latest uplink report on satelliteguys.us and it looks like WFMJ, WKBN, WYFX, and WYTV have been uplinked Dish Network on the new Ciel-2 sat at 129 degrees in MPEG4 HD.
Does anyone know if/when the OTA signals are going completely digital in Youngstown? I know it was pushed back to June 12th, I was wondering if any of the locals are going through with their original plans of Feb 17th. Thanks ahead of time!
http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/11...-tv-next-week/ has a link to a list of stations that are shutting down on Feb 17th as originally planned. There does not appear to be any on the Youngstown stations shutting off their analog signal until June

27 and 33 (now both run by the owner of 27) had filed to shut off analog next Tuesday, but changed their minds. They are both aiming for June 12th now.

21 never intended to shut off "early" (Tuesday), in reference to the new, changed date. They went along with the date change.

45 is, of course, already off analog.

I think 21 went early
lost both digital and analog this morning and still seem to be out?

Well, if they fed cable systems by fiber, maybe they're becoming a cable/satellite channel!

Are they still off? I don't really get 21 over here, in either form.

A lot of the area has lost power. That could be what caused it.
We've been quite fortunate over here, at least I have...power is still on.
And from WFMJ's own website:

http://www.wfmj.com/global/story.asp?s=9832603

Quote:

Nearly 28 thousand homes and businesses are left without electricity in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer and Lawrence counties - more than 13 thousand in Mahoning county - including the entire city of Campbell.

Youngstown was hit the hardest with 12,000 homes without power. Salem is reporting 6,000 in the dark, New Castle 5,000, Mercer 3,000 and Warren 1,500 are without electricity.

The article doesn't mention their own outage.

Here's Ohio Edison/FirstEnergy's outage map...there are giant red dots for Mahoning and Ashtabula Counties.

WFMJ said on the news tonight that their transmitter lost power because of the outages.

I would like to thank the folks at wkbn/wyfx for working with the HD on fox. I am watching the Daytona 500 right now and it looks great! I thought we would never see fox in HD in youngstown. Thank you!!!

I am moving to Youngstown from Atlanta the end of Feb. and for me this is unacceptable. I want to be able to watch CBS in HD and FOX in HD on their own seperate channels. I don't want to watch an inferior HD picture because Youngstown has to have both CBS and FOX on the same channel.

I have been reading through this forum and have noticed that several people have mentioned being able to get the networks from Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

What type of outdoor antenna should I get so that I can receive the Cleveland and Pittsburgh stations?

Also, do any of the stations in Cleveland or Pittsburgh have their local news in HD? In Atlanta ABC, CBS and NBC all have their local news in HD.

Thanks.

Hi newbie here to the forum. if this is the wrong place for it , please let me know

I am located in PA/Ohio border. I have both Cable and Dish Network.

I first noticed the problem on our local station
WFMJ out of youngstown.

When I look at the cable, the picture is being sent out in widescreen. when i flick it over to dish, the picture is zoomed in to fill up the screen.

It is happening on "Heroes" "Office" the "Templer Knight " flick and then i noticed it happening on KTLA out of LA during "Smallville" & "Supernatural".

I have spent HOURS on the phone with DN. their CSR is clueless.

They told me that the local station must be doing it.

They wanted me to unplug my unit, and do all sorts of things , that were more like voodoo than actual tech support :lol

it seems to be only happening on certain stations

I have a DVR #625 dual unit DP+

I also have 3 other units and it is doing it on all of them. I can litterally toggle back and forth and see the aspect ratio and the blowing up of the picture.

so does anyone have any clue as to what is going on? is it dish, is it the locals in Youngstown and LA?

is it dish?

so i called a tech person over at WFMJ in Youngstown.

he says that it is due to something called
"Automatic Format Decscriptor"

Due to the fact that all the less educated amoung us would prefer to see a "full frame"/blown up/cropped version of the picture and have complained, those of us who enjoy seeing the whole picture as it was shot and produced are screwed.

I asked him if it would help if i got an HD reciever, and he said it might possibly not help, if they (DN) do not have an HD Satellite for local channels

so my question is does DN have have an HD Satellite for local channels?

will getting a HD reciever "fix" my problem?

well I called New York, and they told me it is the local affiliate

the guy at the local affiliate says its new york and DN csr's know nothing at all

this is driving me crazy

Dish Network announced on a recent retailer chat that they are planning to add Youngstown HD locals to the new Ciel-2 satellite (129°). According to the latest uplink report at Satellite Guys, the channels are uplinked, but not available.

Unfortunately, the "center-cutting" is how networks are going to handle this. That is why the channel logo bugs have been moved to the 4:3 safe area. I don't think the problem is with the local stations, or Dish network. The problem is with the networks themselves, which have embraced the center-cutting for older TV's.

I don't think Dish Network will allow you to have an HD box unless you have an HDTV. You'd probably have to buy one off Ebay or something.
So is Dish getting all the Y-Town locals in HD and DirecTV isn't? I understand the why DirecTV isn't (the owners of 27/62 not running the fiber), but they do with DirecTV?

Dish doesn't have HD locals yet, but when they do, I'm sure they won't be center cut. The current SD channels are center cut.

The other thing you should know is that the Youngstown locals are uplinked (but not yet available) on the 129° satellite. A lot of people in this area have a 110/119/61.5 set-up, since 129 has such a low elevation angle. Even if you have an HD receiver, and even if/when Dish lights up the Youngstown HD locals, if you don't have a dish pointed at 129, you won't be able to get them.

I had a wing dish installed for 61.5 about 3 months ago.. I guess I will have to get 129 back online. I hope it's better than the old 129

Have any of the Yongstown locals switched to digital, or are they going to wait until 6/12
