Looking for opinions on the best antenna for the Dutchtown/Geismar area 70734? Is the 4228 the way to go?

I'm trying to decide between the 4228, 4221, and the RS VU-90XR (UHF/VHF/FM). Of course I'd like to be able to pickup everything without using a rotator if possible (and keep in the attic IF I can get decent signals. I'm aware of signal loss, but still plan to try it in the dormer window for kicks).

Looks like the 4228 is a very popular ant., but I'm worried about it being too directional and it requiring a rotator. From my location the transmitters are as far as 35° apart. I've been told that the 4221 may be better for me because of the wider range, but this was by salespeople, not people in the BR area. Does anyone think the RS VU-90XR would be as good as or better than the CM's? I've listed my compass orientations although I'm sure most of you are very familiar with my location in regard to the towers. Thanks in advance for the help......

WLPB-DT 27.1 PBS 301° 15.325
WGMB-DT 45.1 FOX 285° 18.045
WAFB-DT 9.1 CBS 317° 17.546
WBRZ-DT 2.1 ABC 282° 12.713
WBTR-DT 19 IND 317° 18.119

I would not recommend an omni directional or bi-directional antenna. Your line of site to the towers makes it ideal for a directional, amplified outdoor antenna (such as a square shooter). Get it up high (20') and point it towards downtown.

Good luck

My sont 30ks955 still won't scan qam hd wvla, but a previous post said they scanned it at 80.19, so I just typed it into my remote and it shows up! I can't garauntee it's HD since there isn't a HD program on yet, but it is digital.

Yes, I just did a scan on my new tuner and it came up as 80.19. It is in HD, since I watched HD programming last night.

Watching 'Stros baseball in HD over my RCA DTC 100 (remember those?) and the picture is beautiful. All my other receivers (LG 3200A and Zenith HD/SAT520) are picking up WGMB just fine except my HD DVR ( ). Still not able to keep WVLA locked in.

I do need to turn it to get the best wvla signal, which diminishes the wafb sig. Then when I want wafb, I need to turn it back. I get all others just great. Just wafb, wvla (no sig worth much, tops 37%)

The 3020 only has a UHF gain of 9.5 where as the 4228 has a 12db gain. A good bit of difference and no the scale is not linear. Or you could try the 91XG which has 16.7db gain. Usually the higher up the better, so get that puppy up as high as you can.

True enough on the gains, but with an amplifier, that should be plenty. The station is "only" 26miles at max. I'll raise it up more, but I won't buy another antenna just for wvla. I'll just live with plain jane OTA signal.

Same ol story, wvla stinks. Maybe they need to find the crank it up knob like WGMB, PBS, and WBRZ has done!

Baton Rouge TV stations to be sold

Breaking News: Two Baton Rouge television stations are among 23 put up for sale by their Lafayette-based owner. Wayne Elmore, CEO of Communications Corporation, confirms that an investment house has been hired to market the stations owned by Communications Corp. and White Knight Broadcasting. The two companies, though separate, are partly owned by family members. Communications Corp. owns Fox 44, White Knight owns NBC affiliate WVLA-33.
Elmore says investment house UBS of Los Angeles is brokering the deal, offering the stations in a package. So far, UBS has fielded 58 inquires from individuals and companies interested in purchasing the broadcasters. Elmore declined to say whether companies in Baton Rouge are interested in acquiring the stations, but sources say Raycom, which owns Channel 9, is interested in Fox 44. Nick Simonette, general manager of Channel 9, did not return a call seeking comment.

The sale of the two stations could lead to more vigorous competition in Baton Rouge. WVLA and Fox do not offer TV news; the acquiring company could add news broadcasts to compete against WBRZ and WAFB.

Elmore says the stations should be sold within nine months. Owners are selling the stations because it's a good time to cash out of the business, he says.

White Knight and Communications Corporation have stations in Lafayette, Shreveport, Alexandria, as well as cities in Texas and Indiana.

I wonder if all these people are just as elated as we are!?!

Think those local stations are below par also?

You are comparing apples to oranges... take a pair of rabbit ears and put an amp on it and make the DB gain match the DB gain of just plain vanilla 4228. I wonder which antenna would win?

I am new to QAM and have a question if anyone out there can help. I am getting all of the locals in HD now on my LG QAM tuner, but sometimes (especially WVLA) the stations seem to have weak signals and hiccup every now and then. Is this normal with QAM? Do I need to call cox?

Can I listen in on the phone call when you explain to the rep you are getting the HD channels without their cable box? They are going to swear up and down that it's impossible.

Do you have cable modem? How is your setup in your home with splitters, etc?

ncriley,
Please listen to Digiblur and do not call cox about this. I made that mistake because I have problems scanning wvla. They will tell you that it's impossible that your getting cable without a box. It's very frustrating.

If your signal gets better when you eliminate all splitters and stuff, then call the cox and complain about intermitent connectivity for your internet or something. If you do that, they'll come over and check your signal strength and maybe replace your coax from the outside cable box with better coax, etc.

I understand. I first called them months ago and inquired about getting HD locals without the expensive subscription and I was told that you had to get the box, the extended package, the HD package, etc.

I have a splitter outside (put in by Cox) and one end goes to cable modem and the other to the tv (the side going to tv seems to have a filter of some sort). I had a slow internet connection awhile back and they came out and fixed an issue with the wiring on the pole, but right now my internet seems fine. Frankly, tonight my QAM signal strength seems okay too.

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I've been monitoring this thread for a while waiting for wgmb to upgrade. I live in Baton Rouge near OLOL hospital near Perkins and Essen. I have a square shooter and have to aim south to pick up Fox (I presume they are broadcasting from their Perkins location) and north to pick up NBC, ABC, and CBS. I can't seem to find a happy medium to pick up all channels with good signal strength. Get so many signal fluxuations that the picture eventually pixelizes. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.
I think you have two options here. One would be to put your squareshooter on ebay and purchase a bi-directional OTA antenna (comprable in price to the SS). Otherwise, you will need to either keep turning the SS manually or you will have to purchase a rotator (option 2). Rotate it from inside your house using the supplied remote control to the two directions as needed.

The squareshooter is pretty sensitive to pick up OTA stations in one direction. You could wait and see what Fox and NBC end up doing with their signals. If they boost them high enough, you may be able to pick them up even when pointing towards downtown (like PBS).

Good luck

I dont know what a saquare shooter is but I would think that you could catch all of the ota with a omnidirectional antenna with a preamp, like a metrostar 2000 or something. I catch wbmg/wvla in opelousas with a 4228. just seems like you would have no problem catching it in the baton rouge area.

It's quiet around here....

I guess everyone is busy watching their HD OTA.... looks like WGMB and WVLA have been watching the "HD switch" closer these days. Way to go!

Just checking in with my numbers in my parts:

WBRZ - 93%
WAFB - 81%
WLPB - 93%
WVLA - 49%
WGMB - 100%

Cox is still missing the PSIP on their QAM channel 80 for WVLA. The only way this will get fixed is with a cable card user.

WVLA is still looking good via QAM for me. One thing I have noticed is that once in awhile (maybe 2 times a day) it will change from showing WVLA to the PBSHD channel. In other words, my tuner still says 80.19, but it is showing what is on 80.23. I then have to change channels and put it back on 80.19 to get WVLA again. I am not versed on the PSIP info, but maybe that is related.

WVLA - 49%

Still suckin! I rarely get over 44%. It is watchable every so often, meaning rarely.

I don't get it. CEA says they are at the same compass point as FOX. So the signal should be just as strong as FOX, however, not the case. So that points to their "switch" still stuck on WE SUCK mode!

Everyone else is peachy for me right now.

However, I haven't had a chance to raise it up another 10' and maybe that will help out WVLA some. Still a lil optimistic.

I live in Denham Springs and I get WGMB at 95% and WVLA jumps between 10 and 30% everything else I catch fine. Im glad I dont really watch NBC so I dont miss much not being in HD. Before Katrina If I pointed my antenna I could get NBC WDSU 6.1 out of New Orleans.

I don't think they are transmitting their DT signal right now as their channel is still on backhaul KU band to feed cable head ends.

Here are my latest numbers:
WBRZ 85%
WVLA 70%
WGMB 65%
KLFY 90%
KATC 80%
KADN 70%
KLPB 95%
KPLC 65%

All above stations are rock solid, I now use (2) radioshack vu120's mounted on a 10 foot mast about 40 feet high, one pointed towards B.R and the other towards lafayette, I've found (despite what some people say about radioshack antenna's) that this combo gives me the highest signal readings of any antenna I've ever tried...

with two antennas can you just combine the signal with a splitter or is there something special that needs to be done? Im looking into getting a better antenna to pick up all the New Orleans stations. I was able to catch ABC, CBS, and NBC out of new orleans with my crappy winegard that D* gave me.

Carwashguy, just a splitter in reverse, thats it.

I'm lucky that LSU is broadcasted in HD so often. I really feel for really anyone who is a fan of one of the many teams broadcast on ABC.

I'm really worried about Auburn, as they have quietly worked there way into the top 20. I think Auburn may be the best team LSU has faced all year.

I can definately say I'm spoiled watching LSU in HD. Can't wait to watch the game on ESPN2HD. A friend of mine was over watching the LSU game in HD one evening and he said "WOW!! You can actually follow the ball on every play! Awesome!"

Alabama will be the tougher foe.

LSU 27, those other Tigers (which should be WAR EAGLES) 17. You read it 1st here!
