An update: I just returned from Red Wing / Lake City where I tested a Channel Master CM2020 antenna. For this first test, I just had it on blocks on the ground and ran it into the SiliconDust HDHomeRun box on my computer.
Every Shoreview channel gave me 50-60% signal strength, and most showed similar signal quality, with several watchable without much trouble. Unfortunately, two key channels (KMSP Fox 9 and KARE 11) showed 50-60% signal strength but 0% signal quality.
Do you think a pre-amp could help me get these channels, once I am roof-mounted? Or will I need a better antenna? It is a hilly area, but it is actually near the top of a hill, and as I mentioned before, the spot is about 53 miles from the Shoreview towers according to tvfool, within the listed 60 mile range of the antenna:
Also, what kind of pre-amp would be worth trying? Someone previously mentioned the CM7777, and SolidSignal also mentions the Winegard 8275 as a similar model. I won't be running much cable, just enough to get down from the roof to the base of the house, and at most I would probably add just a small splitter (so I can have one line direct to the TV, and another to the computer).
I would also take recommendations for mounting equipment. The antenna instructions mention a 10 foot mast. I will probably check out Ness Electronics to get this stuff, since I've never done it before and it would probably be good to talk to someone about it!
