Minneapolis, MN - OTA - Page 48

It seems that I'm in the minority here but I like the new 11-2.
It reminds me of what the Weather Channel used to be - just weather.
I have seen local forecasts from KARE 11 inserted during "your local forecast".
I would imagine that during severe weather they would switch to a local radar view.

As far as putting the sub-channel to better use: start carping on KMSP and WFTC. those sub-channels 9-2 and 29-2 are useless. I understand that FOX, which owns both stations, has a restrictive policy toward sub-channels like CBS does. I would think at some point they'll catch on to the fact that they are already running a 480i sub-channel that no one watches. They could change to better programming ex: Antenna TV with no degradation of the main channel.

There are several stations around the country running Live Well and Bounce. There is also a new kids channel called PBJ that runs old cartoons. There are lots of choices for these local laggard stations to choose from if they'd only get a clue.

While I agree at first glance 9.2 and 29.2 may seem quite useless(and I don't watch them) they really do have a purpose in select areas. Since 9.2 is actually on a higher frequency(29's) areas that have multipath(such as my mothers place in Eagan) may have issues with 9.1 but can get 9.2 rock solid. On the same vein people in fringe areas may be able to get MyTV on 29.2 since it's actually on 9's frequency which being a lower frequency tends to Dx better.
Sure it's a bit of a stretch but it is not like they are a total waste.
Is no subchannels a FOX thing like CBS? I knew CBS limited subs but I didn't realize it was FOX that restricted KMSP.

I would not be surprised if FOX gets more interested in subchannels this fall. They're launching MundoFOX and have promised 75% coverage of national households. They might have to put the network on subchannels of their own stations in some markets to achieve that figure.

Fox has signed with Bounce and Kin in some places.

I see there's a tornado warning out somewhere at the moment, but there is still no radar on 11-2.

Anybody into DXing TV stations here? I live by 169 and 394 in Minnetonka and picked up Duluth NBC Channel 6-1 , PBS 8-1, ABC 10-1, METV on 10-2 and Fox on 21-1 Thursday Morning around 7AM. I'm using that small RCA outdoor antenna I've talked about here aimed toward Shoreview. Duluth must be the same direction, only much farther north. They were coming in on my HD Tivo so I was able to record 2 of the channels for about a half hour before they faded out.
I did a lot of DXing before moving a few months ago, I have not tried very hard here, as I am in an apartment on top of the Lowry Hill tunnel, so I have a good deal of RF to deal with this close to the LPs on the IDS Tower. Here are my past results from before I moved, in case anyone would like to see...

I will have to start paying attension and see if I lock anything from the North or East this spring.

Trip,

I'm not familiar with Kin. What is that?

OK. Maybe I should have said useless to me.
I have relatives in Princeton, MN that had a similar situation.
Now with a home brewed 8 bay antenna all channels come in fine.
In the cities it is probably harder to receive some signals due to multipath.

According to this http://www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=atscmph there are now 3 channels of Mobile DTV in the Twin Cities area. I have tuned KSTP in the past, but 9 & 11 on Mobile DTV is new to me. Can anybody here verify that they are,in fact, broadcasting ATSC-M/H locally? I did note yesterdays date of 04-22-2012, so maybe it really is that new.

I'm still waiting for the whole MDTV thing to settle before purchasing a portable MDTV TV so I couldn't tell you. My biggest concern is if they start scrambling MDTV, that and the lack of well reviewed MDTV TVs.

Yes, it is dated yesterday because I got the new data yesterday. All three are up and running, with KARE being encrypted.

- Trip.....

That is interesting. This past winter I tried the Hauppauge WinTV-Aero-m. It received KSTP-5, but I got a blank screen or black screen on KARE-11, so perhaps that is how it displays an encrypted Mobile DTV channel that has not been decoded. KMSP-9 is new then. Now are there ANY devices yet that I can buy that can be used for encrypted KARE-11 or do I simply have to continue to wait until one of the Dyle affiliated devices is available?
As far as I know, there are no Dyle receivers out there yet.

Trip,

By any chance do you know of any place that has a list of ALL Mobile DTV devices ever made? All I can think of right now is:

-LG DP570MH

-4 RCA devices

-Hauppage

I think there are a few more though.
Not that I know of.

I did remember one more. It is the Coby DTV111.

Trip,

Is the footprint of Mobile DTV less than regular ATSC? The reason I ask is when I enter my ZIP code, which is 55068, it shows no stations. But when I enter a ZIP just north of me it lists the stations in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area.

It's the same on an outdoor antenna. On an indoor antenna, "your experience may vary," just as any other service varies indoors. Given the name "Mobile DTV" they're going to try to predict indoor reception.

A friend of mine who works at a local station tells me that KTCI also has a carrier up there, but there's no programming on it. He further stated that 5, 9, and 11 are just duplicating regular service on their Mobile DTV channels. Which sort of bring up another interesting question, will yours or any of the other lists of stations list what the channel content will be or would that be an impossible tasks?

I'll have to check into that.

Er, I do list the programming already.

http://www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=atscmh

Scroll to Minneapolis and you'll see 5-100, 9-1, and 11-1. That information also appears in the main listings below the dashed line.

Now if we can just get some new Mobile DTV equipment!

Trip,

Is there much chance we would hear anything new about Mobile DTV next week during CTIA 2012?

Well, it appears some wishes have been granted on the Weather Nation channel. There is now a continuous radar in the lower-right hand corner, and a full-screen radar/current temps graphic every 10 minutes or so. I think that significantly helps the channel.

By the way, if you want to have some fun, turn on your closed captioning.

I don't even have the channel on my scan list anymore but to see what your talking about I tuned 11.2 but got something called BETA records TV it's playing college band type music videos. My info screen still displays KARE-WX 11.2 but also this BETA music video channel.....
edit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BETA_Records_TV
I was also going to use the term indie for the type of music and I see thats what Wiki calls it. Sounds like this may just be a segment, Wx will probably follow...
According to BETA's website this should be on channel 23.2 not Wx

It's E/I.

Thanks Trip! it did show the E/I in the upper right corner of the screen the whole time. I knew OTA stations needed to carry a minimum amount of children's programming but the Wiki link explains it's more than just children's programming. Learn something here every day, now I know why I sometimes see that E/I on my screen.
Kind of like years ago when found out what the symbol K or U meant on lots of food we buy, saw it all the time but didn't know what it meant

Having the live radar loop back again is a huge improvement, but they're clearly still working the bugs out of the feed. In addition to the strange captioning mentioned a few posts ago, the current conditions are not presently cycled in complete alphabetical order. For example, Minneapolis is shown right before Eden Prairie, but then St. Paul does follow St. Cloud in proper order. The clock shown is also nearly a full minute behind my atomic clock placed near the TV.

It seems just about every time I've gone to check the radar or conditions over the last day or so, I seem to tune right in the middle of a ton of commercials. I know they have to make money,, but having to sit through several minutes of commercials to get the basic weather information completely defeats the point of accessing it via TV in the first place. If they would just go back to the old screen format with the radar and conditions always shown and the video content displayed in a reasonable portion of the screen, I think the whole thing would be at least as useful as the old channel was.

On a more positive TV weather info note, I noticed over the last few days that KSTP is now overlaying weather alerts rather than shrinking down the whole picture to squeeze alerts in at the bottom. Let's hope that means they're one step closer to being capable of locally broadcasting content in full HD!

Did anyone watch the special on local news last night about cutting costs and ditching pay TV? I thought it was supposed to be on WCCO but I tuned in late and didn't see it. I checked out WCCO.COM but saw nothing about it
I'm pretty sure it would have been the typical fluff piece but kind of wanted to watch it none the less. Anyone else see it or know what I'm talking about?
If they were going to suggest just going with online streaming I would have been interested to see if they addressed what I've read about elsewhere. That is apparently some streaming sources are or are going to require proof you subscribe to pay TV before you can stream programs that are exclusively to pay TV(such as Mad Men, etc.). I'm already trying to figure out what I'm going to do next season when Cougar Town(ABC) goes to pay TV only, streaming may be out of the question then
