Minneapolis, MN - OTA - Page 56

About time! The PQ of Kimmel now is atrocious even for a upconverted program. KMSP does a much better job airing upconverted SD, even their 4x3 upconverted material looks better than KSTPs 16:9 SD. If this is the case I may actually chose to record Kimmel instead of the other two talk shows that are on at the same time. Currently the only time I record Kimmel is if I have a free tuner or I really care for who he will have for a guest.

unless KSTP wants to squeeze in that 1/2 hour 11:00 newscast
post #1653 of 2124
The 11:00 news will probably have to go unless the network doesn't mind them delaying Nightline to make room or an 11:35 newscast or they move the 11:00 news over to 5-2. Maybe they'll use this as an excuse to bring back the news "rewind" channel (one can hope wink.gif)

I see that this morning zap2it.com finally has the programming right again for 9-2 and 29-2. Tivo users, Windows Media Center users, etc. should get the corrected data soon. Now let's just hope they didn't mess with the channel mapping during the process of fixing the programming error....

And that's exactly what they did. They now have 9-2 on VHF 9 and 29-2 on UHF29:mad.gifmad.gif

Today Tribune finally removed that Alaskan channel from our lineup, but the mapping is still messed up for 9-2 and 29-2.
Looks like 9-2 guide info is finally fixed in media center (and presumably elsewhere). Hope it stays that way.

The guide is right, but try tuning it and you'll find that Windows Media Canter won't find it becuase it's looking for it in the wrong place. See my posts here and here (or just look up this page a few posts) .wink.gif
post #1660 of 2124
You're right, and this is much worse. I didn't realize what your comments meant when I read them earlier; I was still able to record 9-2 as recently as Friday night (didn't try yesterday), though my guide data was still screwed up at that point.

It's too bad this stuff is designed so fragile. I'd think letting devices use their own channel mappings and matching guide data to channel by call-sign would be a lot more robust. I guess the reliance must be throw-back to when everything was NTSC and devices didn't have access to PSIP data.

It's been so long since I've done it that I can't remember the details off the top of my head, but there is a work around possible for Windows Media Center that involves manually scanning for new channels and then editing the channel/guide settings. Unfortunately there is no such work around for Tivo users, though a manual channel scan will at least allow Tivo users to add a viewable version of the channels to their channel list.

yay we got a new channel in the cities

too bad its low powered religious KHVM 48...they're back on the air as of this past weekend...affiliate of the Global Christian Network

ugh! I wish we could get some different programming on the low powered stuff here instead of religious

looks like Bounce TV is being added to WFTC soon

http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/61786/bounce-tv-adds-3-foxowned-stations

Bounce TV, the broadcast TV network for African Americans, today announced that it will be launched on Fox Television Stations (FTS) MyNetworkTV subchannels in Phoenix (DMA 13), Minneapolis (DMA 15) and Orlando, Fla. (DMA 19).

according to Rabbitears it will be off Rf29 so will it be 29-3?

That would follow the pattern that WWOR has set.

Wherever they put it, it'll be interesting to see how badly Tribune messes it up in their listings data.wink.gif
post #1666 of 2124
I know this is the OTA discussion but figured it would be the best place to ask since it's local so please excuse the butt-in.

Is KARE11 really boomy for anyone else? The bass is absurdly over the top and has been that way for a while now. I have Dish but KARE is much, much worse than any of the other channels I get. During commercials it is so bad it almost gives me a headache even though I typically like my sound on the bass heavy side. This is just boomy bass and way over modulated.

I would like to compare it to the OTA signal to see if it's a Dish thing, but after they switched to VHF I cannot pick them up, as I only have a UHF antenna on my roof. Does anyone know if there would be different audio parameters for the signal that KARE11 provides to Dish compared to other carriers or the OTA signal? Maybe someone left the "bass boost" button on that feed. biggrin.gif

I seem to remember complaints about KARE's over-the-top LFE/bass going all the way back to the old hdtvtwincities forum. I don't listen to TV through my AV receiver very often, but I did during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and definitely noticed that the low end was clearly ample, to say the least.

It's complete and accurate here, on my TiVo, which gets it's guide info from Tribune.

I see you're from Chicago. According to this page Tribune is "Headquartered in Chicago," so it doesn't surprise me that your lineup would be free from the regular errors that we encounter here any time the lineup or channel mapping changes. It took them nearly a year to get the KMSP/WFTC arrangement correct the first time, and then they went and messed it up again a few weeks ago. Now even if they manage to get that setup back to normal soon, I fully expect it to be broken again when WFTC adds the new sub mentioned a few posts back.

Even in my phone conversations with Tivo, the support reps have all acknowledged that Tribune is the weak link in their support efforts and that there's nothing they can do but keep pestering them and hope that they get things straightened out.

Here are the steps to get Windows Media Center working with a viewable 9-2 and 29-2 and proper listings until Tribune gets things fixed on their end:

1.Go to Media Center Settings->TV->Guide->Add Missing Channels

2. Click Add DTV Channel

3.For 9.2 enter a frequency of 29 and the name KMSPDT2

4. For 29.2 enter a frequency of 9 and enter the name WFTCDT2

5. Select Done

6. In the guide, right-click on the call letters KMSPDT2 (the one with no listings data) and select Edit Channel

7.Select Edit Listings

8. Select sort by number and click on 9.2 (Note the wrong call letters WFTCDT2)

9. select copy listings from channel 9.2 to channel 9.2

10. Select Rename and then rename it KMSPDT2

11. Click Save until you return to the guide.

12. Right click on the call letters WFTCDT2 next to the erroneous 9.2 and select disable channel.

13 Repeat steps6-12 for 29.2, substituting the call letters as appropriate.

14. Test the channels out by clicking on them in the guide or navigating to them directly.

15. Hope that Tribune gets its act together and fixes this on their end soon!

TheCoolTV (WUCW-DT2) is just a black screen right now.....hmmmmmm
end of month is today...maybe end of contract?
Yeah, what happened to 23.2 TheCoolTV this afternoon?!?

We are no longer carrying CoolTV on and Sinclair stations as of this afternoon.

wonder what they will replace it with?
I know other companies pulled CoolTV because of non payment so maybe this is too
post #1677 of 2124
on my AOC TV I tuned to 23-3 and 23-2 went bye bye
so one of my TV's updated. My Panny will too when I turn that one on
post #1678 of 2124
From the very bottom of this page:
Quote:
Dear loyal fans of THECOOLTV in Milwaukee, Greenbay, Lansing, Boise, Palms Springs, Omaha and Tucson. As you know, THECOOLTV is currently off the air in your great cities due to our Affiliate Agreement expiration with the Local broadcast group. We are looking into other opportunities to return to the airwaves in your cities as soon as possible. Thanks for your concerns and support. Contact your local TV providers and tell them you want THECOOLTV!
Interesting that they don't mention Minneapolis/St. Paul and the list still shows 23-2 for Minnesota.
that page you just mentioned was for the Journal Broadcasting group that dropped them near the end of 2011
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journal_Communications
all the cities mentioned have Journal Broadcasting stations which pulled it due to non payment
Quote:
In September 2011, Journal Communications filed a $257,000 lawsuit against the operators of TheCoolTV, alleging non-payment of broadcast services since before June 2011

I'm surprised RunchMachine hasn't commented on your post, I seem to remember he was the one who noted this the most in the early days of hdtv. Like the other poster I really don't watch TV with my AVR on but I did during the Olympics and it was very irritating how much bass was present. I didn't want to take the time to figure how to lower the AVR level so I just lived with it but I didn't really care for it either.
Bummer about CoolTV but like the previous music channel on 23(the commercial free one) I figured it was only a matter of time before it met it's fate. If cable TV can't support a real pop music TV channel I just don't see how us 10?% OTA viewers can frown.gif
