Minneapolis, MN - OTA - Page 64

KCCW suffered a major malfunction sometime today. Essentially not much is being broadcast beyond one giant null packet, as per the TSReader analysis attached below. I don't know if there are any cable companies in the northern portion of the MSP market relying on OTA reception of KCCW to receive CBS, but if there are, they are going to be hurting right now too.

KCCO is unaffected and behaving as usual, as seen in the analysis of that station also attached.

Edit: KCCW appears to be back to normal today (May 2nd)

I have relied on my husband for so many years and he is not able to help us in his medical state now, so I am relying on the geek community that he trusted so much (well he was one of them)

Ok I bought a Panasonic TC-P42S60 42-Inch 1080p 600Hz Plasma HDTV I live in south mpls near Nokomis. I am a stream family only, I have smart tv's so most of the stream stuff is already on one of the tv's and the other one I have a roku on it as well, so for my own purpose I feel I have cable, since I can get so many premium shows just not in real time.

Ok, real time tv. I know I can get this! I need an antenna is all. I am in a rental so I can't put things on the roof or in an attic. So instead, I should rely on a plug antenna.

What is my best bet? Price is important.

Hi Jim's wife, welcome to the board! Jim is a cool dude, thank you for sharing him with us geeks.

I am a little west of you in Minneapolis (south of Lake Harriet). The good news is we get pretty good reception, so just about any old antenna will do. If you or Jim have any old ones lying around, definitely give them a shot first. If you have to buy an indoor one, ideally you will want one that can receive "high VHF" stations (VHF 170 ~ 230MHz) -- not all of them do. Without the high VHF rating, I've found I have trouble getting Fox 9 and KARE 11 (the two VHF stations in the Twin Cities market).

Otherwise, if you are interested, I could drop off a cheap antenna with you (I bought too many awhile back) and I could even help you position it and do the channel scan on your TV. My commute takes me right by that area on 35W. Let me know if that interests you and I can give you my phone number.

Living in S. MPLS you may be able to get by with just a simple rabbit ears antenna which are generally designed for just VHF(channels 2-13) but with your location and the new digital standard you'll probably get the UHF channels just fine.
Another better antenna and designed for both VHF(rod part) and UHF(part that sticks out the front) is a Terk HDTVi(non amplified is all you should need, the HDTVa has a built in amplifier and needs to be plugged in).
The best place to get these is Amazon(probably 1/2 the price of Best Buy) heres a link:
http://www.amazon.com/Terk-Technology-HDTVi-Indoor-Antenna/dp/B0001FV36E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367946618&sr=8-1&keywords=terk+hdtvi

Sad to here about your husband, may I ask what name he posted under? just curious.
Good luck!

his names were fkajames and finance guy a few different ones like that.

I will pass along the URL http://www.antennaweb.org to people that are interested in Over The air reception. I am just wondering what site(s) other members here pass along to find out what TV channels are available in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul DMA?

I like TV Fool, gives you very detailed information: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=90

WFTC has been occasionally showing a standard definition feed of its main 29.1 programming. The PSIP data lists the channel a 29.4 MOVIES!, the channel that was announced as a future Fox station subchannel.
saw a commercial last night about rescanning on memorial day to get Movies! on 29-4
Dont know what RF channel they'll use though

I am glad to hear it. Our DISH 722k had a failure a week ago and the wife was suffering from satellite withdrawal! I still have an Over The Air antenna, so we watched terrestrial channels. Other than the local news, I really didn't find a whole lot of compelling programming, but we got by. As far as I am concerned, the more over the air channels the better!
I'm getting a full signal on 29.4 which says physical channel 29 and MOVIES! for a header, it also says signal cannot be decoded whatever that means confused.gif
Nothing on Wiki AFA MOVIES! channel, maybe it's too new?? Any place else that currently has this channel? It will be nice to have another movies type of channel and since I basically watch nothing on 29.1 I don't care about any HD degradation that might occur tongue.gif

Good catch. I turned on my DTV Pal and it displayed that TWO new services were found:

029-04 MOVIES!

048-01

So when did KSTP get the ability to scroll Wx warnings over HD? I noticed it for the first time last night during the Billboard Music Awards, before that I remember they always switched to SD when they had scrolls which really sucked.

48 is a religious station
Neither of my HDTV's picked up 29-4 even after a rescan

I was just saying I needed to watch High Anxiety again, I haven't seen it since it was in the theaters and was reminded how good it was during a recent PBS special on Mel Brooks. Looks like I'll check out Movies! at 7pm CT Memorial day smile.gif
Wonder how long it will take Tivo to update the guide......
Wiki has now been updated but for whatever reason I can't directly link to the page, just search for Movies! and click on the bolded MOVIES! that comes up. The link below is where you go but again that link doesn't take you to the Movies! page confused.gif
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movies!

Looks like the problem is with the ! after movies, AVS doesn't seem to allow the ! in a link..........

Looking at the schedule, I'm a little disappointed. I understand that this isn't HBO, Encore, FX, AMC, or anything, but I thought they would at least play some movies from the 80's and 90's. You would think they could get better movies from the Fox collection. Initially, it looks like This TV has a better collection.
Movies! 29.4 has been running promos all morning, IMO looks like quite a few good movies will be airing smile.gif
I just sent a email to Tivo, hope they add it ASAP.
That promo has been up since 2:00 yesterday....

I guess I'll have to relook as nothing on the schedule either appeased me or in most cases I knew what it was smile.gif

I like ch. 29-4 Movies! widescreen format and NO annoying logo onscreen!

I found the schedule here: http://www.moviestvnetwork.com/schedule.php
post #1913 of 2124
I flipped to it this morning and the picture was stretched, probably on old Sd movie but major turn off for me.

I agree, something odd about how they are broadcasting things aspect wise. Watching High Anxiety tonight and through my Tivo I was unable to get the correct aspect(with my Tivo set to it's normal 1080i fixed output). Watching on my Sony TVs tuner I could get things normal with "zoom" which for whatever reason only stretched the picture vertically to make a correct aspect ratio, when I used zoom with my Tivo as the source zoom zoomed the whole image and cropped the sides. The only way I could get things correct through my Tivo was to set it to output 480i in which case my TVs zoom only stretched the picture vertically making proper aspect. Something is just not normal with 29.4's aspect ratio......

If you don't like the format I suggest you email them stating so, I did.

Saturday night KMSP was scheduled to be off the air but nothing on their facebook site about why. Was in the D* schedule from 12:00-4:00AM but with the ballgame running late they (Fox) were 1/2 hour behind schedule

12:30AM it was just color bars with "KMSP MINNEAPOLIS/ST PAUL" on the top of the screen then RF9 went off the air (Directv had back screen but OTA showed 0 signal). 9-2 had the color bars all night (as it uses RF29)

I noticed that Antennaweb.org shows that Channel 41 is coming from Shoreview now from the same tower as Channels 4, 5, 45, 23 and 11. I know they had applied to move from BIg Lake to Shoreview. Does anyone here know if they did in fact move their transmitter to Shoreview?
not yet
I only show a 40 signal on the HDTV where as the others at Shoreview show 90+
A guy over at Satelliteguys posted this past week was having issues getting it in Champlin because its 180 degrees opposite the other stations
post #1918 of 2124
tvfool still shows it at the Big Lake location (350 compass for me whereas the rest are at 45)

Nope, sent them an email with no response.
