I'm curious on why you think HD is beneficial. IMO it's a choice similar to buying a Honda or buying a Mercedes. It's what you can afford.
What is going to drive the providers to offer more HD programming? The Consumer.
I support ala-carte programming. Buy what you want. Not all of HBO, just the Sopranos or Deadwood. Not all of ESPN, just Sunday Night Football. Why pay for 100 foreign speaking or music channels I don't watch or listen. You get the idea.
Then with ala-carte programming and with the continued increase in the purchase of HD hardware by the consumer, that consumer then buys only HD content via an ala-carte offering. When the providers notice that only HD programming is being purchased that will force them to offer more HD channels, programming, etc.
