Need help with modulated distribution system

I'm current running a relatively low-end DIY distribution system to 3 remote rooms. I have 5 A/V components being switched by a 2-zone receiver with the first zone going to my living room and the second zone going to 3 remote rooms. The second zone output from my receiver is fed into a VCR so that I can modulate the signal onto channel 3 to feed the remote rooms. In each remote room I have coax feeding into a TV and I use a Xantech IR system to select and control the desired components.

Anyway, everything is working great but now I would like to run the audio coming into a couple of the remote rooms into better speakers than the ones in the TV's. My TV's don't have audio outputs but I was hoping there was some way of converting the coax signal back to RCA so that I could plug into a spare amp. I'm guessing this is called demodulation since it seems to be the exact opposite of modulation, but doing a web search for that term only turns up hi-end equipment costing several hundreds of dollars. Is there a cheaper way to get the audio out of the coax and into an amp?

Thanks in advance,
Alan

You may want to try some of the wireless products from x-10, recoton, leapfrog and such. I am not a big fan of these methods, but they are cheap and easy to send video and audio on 2.4GHz. Also let us know if you have a way to get any more wires to the rooms. Keep in mind that Kenwood has a music server coming out in a couple of months that is called the Entre' and the unit will send Audio over the regular phone lines (home PNA standard) to a "receiver", called the Axcess and you may plug them into any number of rooms. This unit can send CD audio, mp3s ,radio stations (local) and from the internet (requires broadband connection) and more. You can make changes from the Axcess front panel and the commands will be sent back to your main equipment. The Axcess has both speaker outputs and line-level outputs. I have seen the product at the Kenwood Show and the package will be affordable.

Thanks, I think I'll go with the cheap VCR option. Don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place. I've tried wireless before and haven't been very happy with it, and since my distribution system is really working fine except for the coax->RCA part I'll leave it as it is. The Kenwood product sounds interesting but I already have an AudioRequest which takes care of most of those needs (i.e. playing CD's and mp3's from any room).

Thanks for the help,
Alan

I use a ChannelPlus modulator with MTS stereo encoding (model 5645). I get very good sounding stereo audio using a stereo VCR at the remote location.

I think that this is a good compromise between keeping $ low and "doing it right" (meaning spending $$$$).
