If others in your area are getting TVGOS, which they were and are again, it shouldn't have been a problem for you.

VBI would be for analog, does your TVGOS device have a digital tuner to get WWJ-DT?

don't need one, it's a dvd recorder with an IR blaster to change channels on a dedicated box

here is part of the email that I received from ROVI:

The diagnostics from the unit in the living room show no data but the diagnostics from the unit in the bedroom does show data, but it is bad data. So the amp and splitters still could be causing an issue, but there is an issue with the data getting to you correctly. The issue lies somewhere on the Comcast line; between the headend that feeds you and your main feed coming into your apartment. Do you live in an apartment building? If the cable comes into the building and hits a distribution box, the signal could be too weak. Also, you main splitter could be causing some issue. Unfortunately, you might need to call Comcast and have them make a service call. Need to confirm you are getting the best signal for WWJ and that VBI lines 13, 14,15, and 16 are properly passing.

If the device with TVGOS doesn't have a digital tuner, it won't work.

that's not what the contact at ROVI told me because I specifically asked him that question.

You are implying that all dvd recorders before about 2007 or 2006 are useless with TVGOS because they lack an ATSC tuner.

My unit is a Panasonic DMR-EH55

I don't know about your recorder. My LG-3410A has an ATSC tuner, but it was only designed to receive version 7 TVGOS from the analog stream, and its NTSC tuner. With analog OTA gone, it can not receive version 8 TVGOS from the digital stream.

However, it is not "worthless." It has to be programmed in "VCR mode" on a channel/start/stop basis. However, it and version 7 TVGOS were so buggy (together, not sure who's fault) it is better without it.

Cable may or may not "gin up" a fake version 7 TVGOS for analog. but faking it from the version 8 on the digital channel is apparently not trivial. In LG-3410 thread, a lot of people wasted a lot of time trying.

I only meant "worthless" as far as the TVGOS feature....

No problem. My real point was that you appear to need TVGOS version 7 and the question is who is making it and are they making it right. The station is making version 8 on a digital stream. Support for version 7 seems "problematic."

I will check in again with my ROVI contact with this information. Thanks!!!!!

If anyone wants a sneak peak at what the outdoor setup will be like for the Winter Classic on Monday, CBC is now showing the Flyers/Rangers Alumni game (it didn't show up the guide, caught it just now)

Nope, not that I'm aware of. If you don't have a digital tuner, TVGOS is kaput.

Thanks for the reminder. Pretty cool to see Bobby Clarke & Mark Messier on the ice again.

They are playing at the Phillies home field, Citizens Bank Park, and they have a great turnout even for the old timers!

It appears Universal Sports Channel 38.4 is off the air. I will miss it!
It's going cable-only, this year. DirecTV already has it. I haven't checked BHN, much.

I presume Comcast will pick it up due to same ownership, if it hasn't already.

Has anything replaced Universal Sports on WADL 38.4 or is the station now dark?

Just checked OTA; I think the subchannel is now dark. CLARIFICATION: it no longer appears when doing a scan; the subchannel no longer exists.

since this channel is now cable only, any idea of when comcast will add it?

Considering the fact that Comcast owns this channel, I'd guess it'll be relatively soon.

Is there something different in 9.1 transmission from other HD stations? On my system the colors are more saturated and the blacks are blacker. Altogether a great picture.
I know its 720P but so is 7.1.

I get it OTA. My DVR, a Sony DHG-HDD500, says signal quality good with a strength of 74 for 9.1 as opposed to 88 - 94 for 7.1 and most other stations. Everything goes through a Lumagen XS which has yet too be calibrated or tweaked to a Sony Ruby projector.

Nope. Although right now they don't have any PSIP.

As long as you have signal lock, the actual strength does not matter.

So you have two displays and it has the same 'look' on both? If so it may be something with how the source (DHG-HDD500) processes that specific channel, which would be very unusual, but I suppose possible.

the fact that it ever left their lineup is surprising, considering that they own it.....

I can only guess it's due to wanting to carry the HD version, and that takes time to figure out where it's going to go and what, if anything, needs to be removed.

More on TVGOS:

After research I have learned that a cableco can have a box that gets the TVGOS data from Rovi via a server over the net, and inserts it on an analog channel. It appears Comcast was doing this at least in some areas and they are now telling customers it's over, done, kaput. Other cableco's are still doing this, for example Service Electric in PA.

So, an older analog TVGOS device connected to Comcast in our area may well have been getting analog TVGOS (version 7) from them. It could also be the case that like in other Comcast areas, our area is no longer going to offer the analog TVGOS feed.

Putting 2 & 2 together, this is probably related to the Comcast plan to eliminate all analog channels. Once they are gone, analog TVGOS is dead anyway.

This issue, and the issue CBS is having with digital TVGOS (version 8), appear to be unrelated.

Yeah, I can't imagine them wasting an entire analog channel just to keep this relatively niche service online. I'm honestly kind of shocked that they'd gone through the trouble of adding this special box in the first place.
