Detroit, MI - HDTV - Page 6

Thanks for the info. I also found that setup wizard after my post. The install guy failed to do it.

I know some other areas can now use the DVI port, hopefully we'll be up soon.

FWIW, the cable guy told my wife that WOW's HD choices will increase dramatically beginning in Feb.

Yes, but it works only on the 3250HD right now, not the 8000HD boxes.

I don't think that will be the case. On Dec 14, WOW will be adding WB-HD and UPN-HD, and Wealth-HD has already been activated. That leaves TNT-HD, EPSN2-HD, Universal HD, INHD 1 &2, Sho-HD, and TMC-HD that they don't have and I have not heard anything from the people I know inside WOW that states they will have any of those listed channels by Feb. If they do sweet, but I wouldn't hold your breath for more soon.

Excellent, thanks for the info. I really want fox sports world for the aussie rules football coverage (starting again in april).

Add me to the list of those experiencing audio dropouts/freezing of video with ABC. I'm using the DirecTV HD Tivo so I'm getting the signal OTA. I bought the Tivo in the middle of August and had problems back then as well but after buying an attenuator they went away. I guess WXYZ must have fixed that problem at about the same time I bought the attenuator because I'm now experiencing the same problems again. The problem happens on both HD and non HD programs. Ugh !! Anyone have any updates yet from WXYZ? Sure hope they have it fixed by the Rose Bowl !!

So that I can help inform WXYZ, is it fair to say that everyone who is experiencing audio dropouts is using the digital output of the set top box?

In my case, at least, I usually do. However, the analog audio output is also interrupted when these incidents occur.

Also, it's not always just the audio that is freezing. Occasionally, the video stops and starts, too.

I took a plunge today and got my self a very good deal on a Sony KDF-55WF655 - w/ built in HDTV Tuner. Been eyeing the Panasonic 50LC14 but settled for this box as it has an HDTV Tuner. I reckon at some point in time - I will not be able to afford Comcast Cable and will just be content with OTA HDTV signals.

My questions:

1. I am currently a Comcast Digital subscriber customer. If I hook up this TV, to their drop (bypassing the SD digital cable box) - will I get at least the non-scrambled HD signals (which are available OTA?). What about with WOW .. will I get free HD as well?

2. Cablecard - anyone knows when Comcast will start offering this? Or WOW for that matter?

3. What antenna should I get to receive OTA (will be content with just PBS, ABC, FOX, CBS and NBC).. Will my existing rabbit ears do at my location? There are no high buildings around my place.

Thanks for the help.

I believe you will only get stations up to 99 with Comcast.
Yes .. but will I get the HD stations (the free ones that are available OTA anyway)?

It sux that the Lions game won't be in HDTV on Fox today!!!!! Apparently that's what happens when 2 extremely marginal teams meet this late in the season. But oh well, most Lions games this year have been in HD.

I would say that it is almost like having a bunch of bad DVD layer changes - the video and audio stop and pick up a second later, like the stream drops out completely but it also doesn't seem to be a loss of signal because the strength meter doesn't move when this happens. At least that is my take on it. Hopefully they can figure it out because it has gotten pretty annoying!

I have a smilar set and when I hook up cable directly to the set, I get nothing additional except for the music channels through WOW. No Standard Digital and no HD. I do receive HD OTA pretty good though.
Last time I spoke with WOW, they weren't sure if there was enough interest in the cablecards to move forward with it. So, if any is interested they should call and let it be known.
Hope this helps.

Yep....was looking at this previously, but I'm glad its not correct:

Please place all related comments here, and don't forget to mention your source and provider! Cities, station call letters, cableco.

If you are watching via NFL Sunday Ticket, please do not post in this topic. Those comments belong in the NFL Sunday Ticket topic, thanks.

I'm around 696 and Main in Royal Oak. Before I got a rooftop antenna installed by Voom, I was able to get all the locals OTA with rabbit ears from Radio Shack (don't remember the model #, but they were amplified) -- and that's from a basement apartment. Wasn't perfect, though. Had to frequently adjust them and would lose the signal quite a bit -- but just for a few seconds at a time. Good luck.

By Law if you call your cable company and request a cable card they have to give it to you. There is no "IF WE CHOOSE TO" they have to.

That definitely was NOT HD. It was 480i FOX Widescreen. Not pretty to look at.

tbb1226, I thought the game looked suspect, but my Hughes HTL HD receiver claimed it was 720p.

I thought the game did not look that good either. Is it possbile that it was shot in 480p then Fox 2 up-converted it to 720p?
I was directed to this thread after my post in the Tivo forum. I've been have the same video/audio stuttering problems with Channel 7.1 through my HD Tivo. I even had D* send me a new Tivo last week.

I only watched one hour of Channel 7.1 programing on Sunday and had a couple of dropouts, not as bad as Saturdays' football games.

I will try to get through to the Channel 7 engineering dept. also.
Good luck, steady teddy. I too noticed that the dropouts were much less frequent on Sunday. The guy I talked to at Channel 7 is Ray.
I called Channel 7 Engineering dept. Ray was not in and I don't know if the person I spoke with was an engineer but I explained the problem and that person said he would relay the message to him. They also asked for my name and phone #.

I don't know if this will help any but I also contacted D* HD Tivo support and explained the audio dropouts/video stuttering issues on channel 7.1 to them. They said they would look into this issue and mentioned they would also contact channel 7 directly.

And I also gave them the direct link to this thread.
Nice job, teddy. It would be awesome if D* talked directly to Channel 7 as they could then communicate engineer to engineer.

Yeah, that's what they do with 95% of their non-sports programming. If the source is not 720p, it gets upconverted by the encoder. The only difference between the Lions game and the "meet your new mommy" show is that the game was presented in widescreen instead of 4:3. An OK compromise, considering the dearth of HD equipment. As long as it's only once in a while....
Defintitely, the Lions game looked way better on 2.1 v. channel 2.

Okay.. set was elivered yesterday and I finished assembling my 99$ Furio Stand from Target and finally mounted the set. I hooked up my COmcast drop tlo the cable IN and my Rabbit Ears to the Antenna UHF/VHF in.. turned it on and let it scan the channels. With the Cable input I managed to get PBS-HD, ABC-HD, the 99 channel range , Plus the Music Choice channels with the staionary video.

OTA Channels I managed to get all the Networks.. Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, UPN and WDB! And lo and behold.. what I was aiming for is now a reality.. You see I was simply after OTA HD programming.. So I guess the COmcast connection will be droppped very soon..

I will just wait for when SBC starts offerring TV services via their Upgraded LightSpeed (FTTP - Fibre to the Premises Project).. Set Top boxes will reportedly incorporate both COmponent, DVI and HDMI connections to TVs.
