I'm about to take the plunge and buy an HDTV to replace our ancient CRT set. I'm a Bright House subscriber. I know that I'll have to arrange for a different STB (or DVR, if we decide on that). What equipment do they normally provide, and more important, are there any models to avoid if possible? Thanks!

Last time I went by, the Moto 6412 was still the only DVR box they had available. BHN Florida worker who's a friend of mine got to beta a Samsung, but it never made it this far. SATA ports are NOT enabled, so ten hours of HD is about all she'll hold.

Word of advice.. put a UPS on it. If it loses power, it'll boot up enough to use in about five minutes, but it takes up to half a day to reacquire the guide data. Scheduled recordings will be missed until it gets that data.

Also note that the latest software update doesn't play nice with hdmi. Machine may periodically lock up requiring a hard boot. BHN's workaround: use component out.

(and people wonder why I built my own)

Hi all, is it just me or was Survivor not broadcast in HD this week?

I didn't watch it. In the national topic no one said anything, so I would guess it was HD.

It was on my end, the power outage today appears to have reset a the box and TV which for some reason resulted in HD not being displayed.

Discounted pricing is available for Triple Play customers.

Do you also have to pay for an extra digital outlet to get the privilege of paying 7.95 for a terminal, or are those prices all inclusive?

Thanks for the reply ... I'm really looking forward to finally joining the 21st century.

My dish box, a VIP211, does not include a dvr as I refuse to pay a monthly fee. Then I discovered this box will take an external hard drive as a dvr. Dish only required a $40 startup fee but no monthly fees thereafter. It works great & hard drives are now cheap. I've had it for almost a year. I have 40 movies recorded on it, most in high def. It says I still have 60 more hours of HD space or 240 hours of SD. Never had a problem.

Just was announced the Michigan - Indiana football game on October 2nd will be on ESPNU. I know on Comcast we now have ESPNU on channel 735, but this isn't HD, is it? Do we have ESPNU HD on as part of our Comcast (Saline Digital) channel line up? Thanks for any info.
Found this through google:

ESPNU HD is a 720p high definition simulcast of ESPNU that launched on August 28, 2008 to coincide with the start of the College Football season. [7] The service debuted with the football game between Vanderbilt and Miami University. Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS, Blue Ridge Communications, Atlantic Broadband and Broadstripe carried the HD channel at the launch date. [8] In late 2008, AT&T U-Verse added it. Bright House Networks began adding the HD channel on a regional basis on November 7, 2009. [9] Cablevision added it on March 23, 2010. [3] DirecTV added the HD channel on May 19, 2010.

So Comcast & Dish don't have the HD version yet.

Remember that one of the local stations can buy into a simulcast. Most likely WXYT. Though I can't say if it'll be in HD or SD.

Highly doubtful that ESPN would sell an OTA simulcast for this game. I know they did that for a Michigan game that was on ESPN Classic a few years back but I don't think we will see that again.

WXYZ has a Michigan State game at the same time and WXYT is a radio station.

Yeah, and one of ours at that. Hence the habitual mistype.

Comcast Update:

HDNet will make its Michigan debut in select areas on 9/30, channel 382. More to come.
That is good news, hopefully we get FSCHD and BBCHD as well in the near future.

At that point I will be a very satisfied consumer.

Great news!

I would like to see ESPNU HD added, but beyond that there is no other channel that I that I really feel like I am missing.

^^
You must live in a "select area." Here in Royal Oak, there are plenty of missing HD channels, and every update we get seems to push back the ETA for adding new channels another two months.

I will have to check again next time I visit the parents (I've been Comcast free for 2 months), but when I couldn't pick it up in the usual spot, I rescanned and got two SD versions (one 4x3 one 16x9) on the TV. Those, and some of the channels have been moved around recently (maybe related to whole house DVR?) as does happen from time to time . . .

What Comcast system are your parents on?

From this months Charter statement

On November 9, 2010, we will be launching Comedy Central HD on Basic Expanded HD on channel 688 and WKBD CW HD on Basic HD on channel 787. To accommodate this new channel, we will need to migrate Hallmark Channel to Basic-Expanded Digital Only channel 79.

it's about 4 years too late for CW in my mind since the Pistons are no longer on there.....

Thanks

I have noticed about 3 homes within my subdivision that have external television antennas. I'm thinking about purchasing the Winegard HD8200U television antenna to place on top of my home on a tripod.

Anyone have any information on the rules and regulations of external television antennas in Rochester Hills, Michigan? Thanks

The FCC says that an OTA antenna within reason is fine: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html. The city probably understands this and will not give you a hassle. However, I have seen homeowner associations that think that their rules supersede the FCC, so YMMV.

I attempted to have "Anyroom DVR" installed yesterday. The main hub hooked up was no problem but the tech was unable to get the sat hub running. Seems the the hub was not flashed at all before leaving Comcast.

We will attempt to finalize this installation on Friday.

The key word in your comment is 'think'. Regardless of what a homeowners association 'thinks', it's illegal for them to try and enforce an anti-antenna rule. Same goes for local municipalities.

The exception is when a residence is located in a registered historical area.
