RG 179 cable. . .?

Tried a search for/on RG179
Will:
Beldon (RG179)-E 83264 M17/94, MIL -C1755495 (W/ 75 Ohm BNC connectors)
work well to use as my cabling between my Extron109 to my Barco RGBHV (input4/5)?
Thanks!

David,
Depends on the length of the cable.

RG 179 is a high loss cable. Overall, as a rule of thumb, I wouldn't exceed 3 dB loss at 100 MHz. This will allow you to run 720p with no apparent degradation. This will limit your run length to under 30 feet.

Some 'experts' may say 3 dB at 100 MHz is too much attenuation, further limiting run length.

I'm using a similar cable, 25' long, with my line-doubled Sony 1272Q. I had to use the small diameter cable because my doubler uses a DB-15 connector in a DB-9 shell size. No way to fit RG-6 in there. The projector is still very much the limiting factor. Your Barco is a higher performance projector, YMMV.

RG 179 ATTENUATION:
Nominal
MHZ DB/100'
1 3.0
10 5.3
50 8.5
100 10.0

RG 179 is teflon jacketed, totally overkill for a non-avionics installation. PVC jacketd cable is much cheaper.

If you have the physical space, RG-6 is the video reference standard, with the attenuation characteristics below:

MHZ DB/100' MHZ DB/100'
5 0.67 400 4.00
55 1.60 450 4.26
211 2.87 550 4.71
270 3.24 750 5.59
300 3.43 870 6.00
350 3.72 1000 6.54

Tom,

Thanks for the reply, sorry I took so long to say so, I am in the Army and am Temp Duty away from home. . .

The run I am talking about is ~10'. I got some RG179 cables pretty cheep that had the BNC connecters already installed on one end. I have a generic BNC to BNC cable I am using now, just wondered if the RG179 would be better
