This is an interesting lesson in contrasts and making assumptions, folks.
Let's start with exhibit 1:
As you know, I've been following your search for the perfect DVD player
for your needs. I'm glad you ask questions up the wazzoo! We should all
do so much research!
Thank you, Matt, I appreciate that. I try. ;)
I have to question your comment about narrowing your search to good
audio, less than terrific video because of the kind of TV you presently own.
I bought the Integra DPS 10.5, knowing that my display wouldn't be taking
FULL advantage of all the video features this player offers (I have a Panny
6uy EDTV, so can't get much, if any, benefit of the scaling features the 10.5
Yes, but even at that, your Panny is quite a bit more sophisticated than my TV is.
At the price point you're looking at, I would still go for the highest quality
video you can afford, and worry about upgrading your display at a later date.
A well-made player like the ones you're looking at will last you for many years.
Yes, this is forever the balance and debate that I'm having with myself, in a nutshell.
Thank you, Matt. See, Matt's post and sentiments are far and away typical of what I get on AVS and directed at me personally. *Knocks on wood*
Now, let's switch gears to Jack here.
Here's Exhibit 2:
Jack here, who, unless he's lurked here for a long time, has made some assumptions that show he hasn't been around here for long and decided to take some shots. It forces me to question everything he's written pretty much.
You know what they say about assumptions, right?
If you re-read the post, and maybe I didn't write it clearly enough, I expressed surprise, although maybe I shouldn't be.
I haven't made ANY verdicts. Hence my fence sitting! ;) I'm the known champion of skepticism and fence sitting around these parts. I may go in with certain expectations, because of what I see on paper or other input, but that's a lot different than a judgement. Even scientists have to do that and then be proven either right or wrong in their experiments.
And anyone who's ever bothered to engage me in dialogue via PM or some other method, I'd like to believe, will easily shoot down your assumptions about me here.
My point was: On paper (emphasize), I EXPECT the Onkyo 1000 to be better BUT...often times, even I have learned that just because it's heavier, more expensive, etc. etc. does not automatically mean you win the the blue ribbon.
Onkyo's bread and butter has always been audio so I would EXPECT, on paper, for it to be the best at least for audio.
That doesn't necessarily make it so and that's not a judgement at all.
I just was very intruiged and amazed because Jack was the first person I had run across to actually put the Onkyo 1000 that low on a comparison list with all those other players.
That does fascinate me. It could very well be true. I don't know because, as you all correctly say, I'm sorely lacking in first hand experience.
And the way my dealer is here, I won't have the oppurtunity to do my own comparisons even if I had the money.
Larry, I know everyone is posting their observations and I'm sorry if my post was taken the wrong way, as I certainly meant no disrespect to Jack. I was, and am, quite fascinated.
Larry, you've had enough dialogue with me to know better than this. I'm disappointed that you agreed with Jack in his false statements about me. And they are dead false.
|And please, stop believing everything you read.
Start experiencing it and stop giving a verdict on something you have never heard
Sorry, but I am going to take exception to this condescension. This statemetn alone proves that you haven't been around this forum very long, because this is the exact opposite complaint I get from most forumers around here. A lot of them are getting annoyed because I'm sitting on the fence too much and am too skeptical.
And who the hell are you? You have four whole posts to your name. Have you been lurking around here for a long time to suddenly come in and render judgements like this? I can't believe I would be that important to merit that kind of scrutiny. I think your statement proves quite the contrary.
Anyone who's been around this forum for a while and has run across me, I'd like to believe again, my record speaks for itself, and this isn't it. You're wrong.
First of all, it's simply not true.
Second of all, some of us mere mortals have to spend our money on other things besides our hobbies (unfortuneately) and can't rack up thousands of dollars on electronics to demo everything we're curious about.
I'm happy you have the time, money, and resource to go ahead and first hand demo anything that scratches your fancy. Congratulations. That goes to a lot of people here.
Some of us just can't do it.
Believe me, if I had my druthers, I'd gladly do exactly as you suggest.
I'd lineup all of these players here at my house right now and get it done. I simply can't afford it AND they're not even available to me.
And even if I could, my one dealer for Denon and Onkyo and Integra doesn't have them in stock. I'd have to special order evertyhing and pay MSRP plus 7 percent sales tax. So it's just out. Not going to happen.
It just can't be done for a lot of us. I sure won't go for a sucker's deal like that!
If I believed everything I read, I would have bought a Denon 3910 the day it came out.
I would believe that Denon is arguably the only game in town vs. just about everything else if I believed everything I read on this forum and didn't look to MANY other sources.
I would think that my obvious skepticism and fence sitting that are well known around these parts clearly indicated that I don't believe everything I read. Not by a lonshot. ;)
It's probably getting annoying to a lot of the forumers. I would expect complaints against me more to the exact opposite of the trash you just tried to throw at me. Sometimes I do. :p
So, I reject this statement outright. You're dead wrong.
Most of my posts around here are questions. I never render a judgement unless I have first hand experience. I own the Zenith 318, so that's why you see a FAQs thread written by me and I do hit those threads with declaritive statements when people have questions.
Sorry, but this feels like a glorified troll post and I'm calling it the BS that it is.
I reject it all outright. How's that for not believing everything I read?
Furthermore, I stand by my comments, although I should have written them more clearly. I hope this clears up any confusion on anyone's part.
I guess I shouldn't have written them before crashing in bed last night. Obviously I came across the wrong way.
Jack, you are the first person that I have run across to rate the Onkyo so low compared to everything else. That's fascinating to me and I hope you're able to do more on that someday.
I always take special interest in dissenting opinions. That gets my attention EVERY time. But guess what? I'll take your advice. I won't believe everything I read. ;)
