The following is an email I received after requesting a status on HDTV at FOX. Doesn't look like it will happen soon.
"As of right now, we are being told that the fiber optic cable capable of carrying digital signal should arrive at our channel 47 facility some time in August. This is the first step. The main difference this alone will make is that we will no longer experience microwave related fades in the Alexandria area. There is some discussion as to what extent Alexandria will become a distribution hub for us. At present, at least in these early stages of the transition, that digital signal will be transmitted by way of microwave either directly from our channel 47 facility to 48 and 67 or to 67 and thence to 48 and on to 49. The channel 61 transmitter picks up an off air signal from 47, the channel 51 signal is picked up off air in Hineston and forwarded via microwave on to the transmitter site. At this point, it sill looks like the 47 site will be the first to be converted to digital, but at this point, I still have no direct information as to when that will occur. At some point there is likely to be fiber laid to at least some if not all of the other transmitter sites, and that will change this routing situation at least to that site if not to others. We live our lives day to day around here, and deal with the situation presented to us today.
The second piece of this puzzle is that congress has been playing games with the dates again, I have heard several versions from 2006 to 2009 and I am not sure what the final answer will be, I am not sure that anyone else knows either. Those people in Washington are afraid that individual constituents will issue them pink slips if they mandate the full digital conversion too soon. Of course they didn't worry about that when they started this whole process. If they had allowed the market place to drive the transition instead of issuing edicts in the first place, the transition would probably be done already, and with a lot less hard feelings on all sides. Yes, I am somewhat cynical about congress, but at this point anything they do can do nothing but make things worse and you can bet that they are going to try to do something. Oh well, so much for my political and technical commentary. I hope there has been enough fact here (as to be differentiated from opinion) to answer your questions, at least in as much as I have the information to provide answers from. "
