What type of receiver are you using?

Here is the channel assignment (first is current, Second is digital temporary, third is Feb. 2009 channel assignment):

KRCR DT ABC 07 34 07
KIXE DT PBS 09 18 09
KHSL DT CBS 12 43 43
KNVN DT NBC 24 36 24
KCVU DT FOX 30 20 20

I get all of the stations now with no problem at all. Well, recently I have been losing KIXE but I don't know why. Maybe since they changed they tweaked the power or something. But my strength is low.
  • 7.1 / 7.2 - 87%
  • 9.1 / 9.2 / 9.3 are holding at 41% (I should go adjust or something just to check)
  • 12.1 / 12.2 - 95%
  • 24.1 / 24.2 - 98%
  • 30.1 / 30.2 - 92%
I flip over to 34.1 and it 87% but it says no signal received.
Now when I flip over to 18.1 I have 41% and no signal is displayed.

I am using this antenna mounted to my Sat dish pretty much facing South/South East. It is not very finiky, so small adjustments don't change my strength much.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2253765

I'm connected directly to my television (Sony KDF-E42A10). I will be connecting my antenna to my AM-21 this week when it arrives (hopefully). I do have a few PBS recordings, so this could present a problem as I am not picking up the signal. I am forcing the tuner to scan digital channels, maybe it will then pick up 18/34.

But as you can tell, I have no problem at all receiving either UHF/VHF.

So here is the result of my latest scan...
9.4 - 70%
9.5 (create), formerly 9.3 - 70%
9.8 no signal with 70% strength
9.9 no signal with 70% strength
There were no signals found on 18 or 34 even though they broadcast with high percentage strength.

HDFinder:

Okay, I'm shooting from the hip now. I think that the problems your describing might be a combination of PSIP data issues and the way your tuner interrupts the signals. I have a Samsung LN52A750 HDTV. The ATSC tuner does not properly map UHF channel 20. Instead of getting 30-1 and 30-2, I get 20-3 and 20-04. KIXE now lists 09-1, 09-2, 09-3, & 09-08 09-9. With 09-8 and 09-9, they are totally blank channels. They showed up on my TV about 1 week ago.

All my other ATSC tuners interrupt all the digital channels correctly, mapping them to the correct numbers, and there are no extra channels for KIXE.

Have you deleted your digital channels, then scanned them back?
Sounds like we do have a similar situation going on then. I guess mine is mapping to 7 and 9 from 34 and 18 whereas you are substituting 30 for 20.

No, I have not deleted before scanning. This morning I did a scan and it said it found 4 channels. I was nervous at first, but then I realized it found 4 additional which were the 9 sub-channels.

I hope 9.5 will be the HD channel. I know there is not an overwhelming amount of HD in KIXE, especially that I watch, but hopefully I have not lost it all together.
9.8 and 9.9 are related to UpdateTV, a service for update tuners over the air. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UpdateTV A properly-designed tuner should not show those "subchannels" at all, but some tuners (including one of my own on my local PBS back home) doesn't know what to do with it and shows them as blank subchannels.

Trip,

Thanks for the information. So, if the TV station has a bug in their software they can pass it on to all the ATSC tuners capable of receiving it? or is this just for NVM updating?

Yes, not all ATSC tuners are created equally, some seem to work better than others.
In theory, it's for if the tuner has a bug in it, the manufacturer can broadcast the update over the air to that specific make of receiver.

Thanks Trip in VA. I hope Samsung jumps on-board as on model HDTV has a problem with UHF20 and how it maps.
It's isolated to that receiver? That seems odd, usually mapping problems occur at the station.

Does anyone in the market use a Windows-based computer tuner to watch OTA digital TV? Send me a PM if you're interested in helping me out, plus I could take a look at this channel 20 issue.

(By the way, does anyone in Chico see a digital signal on channel 11?)

Trip,

I think that this problem with channel 20 is with the ATSC tuner on my Samsung. I have communicated with the engineers at KCVU and they have gone through their equipment with a fine tooth comb. I have different ATSC tuners that properly map UHF 20 to 30-1 and 30-2. With the Samsung, it shows the native 20 -3 and 20 -4 channels, and the channels that we previously discussed on KIXE PBS 09.

I do use a Hauppauge 950 ATSC USB tuner on a Windows XP computer. So feel free to PM me if you have a specific request.

I have rescanned all my ATSC tuners and I get nothing here in Redding. I have a friend who lives in Chico and he did notice a new digital channel but I don't remember the actual number. Hopefully the Chico posters will chime in.

That's really interesting about the Samsung tuner. I don't own one to be able to say I know much about it, but given the quality of the ones I've seen and heard about, it would not surprise me. Still, I can peek at the bitstream and look for anything that just jumps out at me.

It says I can't PM you. "blastoff has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her." If you'd rather not mess around with it, e-mail me. webmaster (at) rabbitears (dot) info

Yeah, I recall hearing that a 300-watt DT-11 signal showed up in Chico, I listed the information I was given on my site, but wanted to know if anyone could confirm it for me. I only have rumor.

Trip,

I sent you a private message. I checked my setting and can't see where it is turned off. I did make some adjustments so hopefully it will work now.
Anybody know why KHSL didn't broadcast 60 Min's in HD?

I'll have to get back to you & repost more accurate info, but yes, there is actually a "new" 11.1, 11.2, and 11.3 in Chico now. I stumbled on it around the first of the month; there's another set of channels/subchannels in the 20's that also appear to be from someplace in the North Valley; all had either religious programming or Spanish programming (could be Univision). Will check it out again when I get home.

I assume you mean this one? http://www.rabbitears.info/market.ph...130178#station

Definitely let me know, I'll be glad to find out what these LD stations are doing.

I was home for a short time this morning and scanned for local channels using Dish's 722 receiver. Here are the new "mystery channels":

11-01 Religious
11-02 HSN Shopping - this is definitely an existing analog channel being re-transmitted

...then there's the "suite" at 15:

15-01 3ABN Religious
15-02 Audio Only - Religious
15-03 3ABN Spanish Religious
15-04 Audio Only - Music Channel

In North Chico I get a signal in the high 60's to low 70's on all the above using a DB4 antenna.
Ok, got my new Winegard antenna put up today. It is a VHF only YA-1713 VERY large antenna. I was able to combine it with my east and west facing UHF antennas (with blockers and signal combiners) and get PBS with a signal strength of 85%. Very happy. Now here is the dilemma...

Connected to my Panasonic Plasma, I get all three PBS stations fine. Connected to my DirecTV HR20, I get 9-1, but 9-2 and 9-3 show the 771 error (searching for signal), although the signal strength meters show 9-2 and 9-3 at the same strength at 9-1. The DirecTV guide is also incorrect. It always shows a different show on 9-1 than regular channel 9. When I tune to 9-1 it is the same program as 9 broadcast via satellite. I have cleared the channels and started the process over again several times. No change. It appears that the HR20 is mapping the channels wrong. Any thoughts? Anyone else with this issue?

The guide on my Directv systems (HR10-250 and now HR21 with AM21) have never shown correct guide information for the digital channels. Only the SD version coming over the satellite has been close. I think it is KIXE not reporting the schedule correctly.
Yeah me too!

I have the HR-21 + AM 21 fed from my rooftop antenna.

After splitting the OTA signal I have a great picture on 9, 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3
when going into my plasma direct.
When going into the AM 21 I can not recieve 9.2 and 9.3

Had the DirecTV guy here (in Chico) the other day and he said he had no knowledge
with the AM 21. He wrote on his tag 'customer provided equipment, can not repair'.

What do you think?

Sounds like the same problem I am having, I am going to call DirecTV. I am not looking forward to it......

Still waiting to borrow that DB-8 antenna, but just rescanned OTA digital from my TV tuner. North Chico Yagi.

Ditto as crauen on:
11-01 and 11-02

Nothing on the 15's

But 41.1 and 41.2 come in with same programming as 11.1 and 11.2.

Interesting. Chico seems to have several low-powered digital stations already. I do wonder why Family Stations has two stations repeating each other like that, though...

Does anyone see KMSX-LD on 29? Here's their pattern: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-serv...LD1250651.html

And does anyone know which analog station is getting repeated on 11-2 and 41-2?

KRCR is going to attempt to convert their native channel 7 so it will operate digitally during some late night hours for testing.

KRCR would like feedback on how your ATSC tuners work with their digital channel 7, and want to know if there are problems when you rescan the tuners so to receive digital channel 7 in VHF. If you are awake during the testing times and test, please report your results in this forum.

Scheduled dates for testing VHF7 in digital (weather permitting):
October 12
October 26
November 16

(Testing is on Sunday mornings between 02:30am - 04:30am.)

If it is decided that more testing is required, tentative scheduled dates are:
December 21
January 18 .

When KRCR performs the testing they will shut off UHF34 digital channel during the testing times.

Channel 34 will be off the air from 1:00am - 5:30am at scheduled testing times. The analog VHF7 transmitter will switch operate normal, "NTSC broadcast" before and after the testing times.

Here is the response I got from KHSL:

Bill,
There was a problem with the Primary Satellite feed at CBS and we were required to change to the backup feed. CBS has not yet provided HD on our backup feeds, so the rest of the game was in SD. Sorry from the problem!

Does that actually work? I've contacted DirecTV a couple of times regarding the lack of HD support for network stations. Each time I've been told I can't get a feed from a different market due to FCC regulations.

I don't necessarily need local channels, but I would like the networks in HD. To this end I have begun experimenting with receiving OTA signals with an antenna. Initial results have been fairly good, but the Redding stations (ABC and PBS) are a no-go for me thus far. (I probably need to look at placing an antenna on my roof for those, and I'd rather avoid that if possible.) If I could get S.F. area network affiliates in HD with my DirecTV subscription in Chico I'd be pretty happy.
