About to buy Onkyo SP-1000 please comment - Page 2

Onkyo support told me the firmware does address all HDMI BTB issues. I don't know why they won't just release it on their website. Maybe they're trying to prevent 26lbs paper weights when flashed incorrectly or it's not ready due to other issues. Could speculate a lot, but I think every owner would like to hear it from them, directly. I'm trying see if there are other issues like audio sync over HDMI with video based DVDs.

As their website indicates,
"DV-SP1000 >> The Most Advanced DVD Player In The World"
*sorry, couldn't ignore that*

I'm literally holding the phone in my hands right now, ready to place this order. Someone needs to kick me off the fence, one way or the other. ;)

Anyone got the name of the rag?

Greg
It was in the 10.5 thread...

This mag was mentioned... I may head over to Borders or Barnes and Noble to see if they have it. Reviews I've seen haven't even mentioned the BTB issue so go figure...

I would say at that price, they are bound to run out so you best get on it:)

I'm confused. This is a lot of money for me, and I'm fed up with Denon. This Onkyo better work. I'll be using HDMI for video only, not for audio. I'm not sure if that'll affect the sync delay or what not.
I don't know if this will put your mind at ease a little bit or not...

I've had my SP-1000 for close to two months and I've played lots of movie DVDs and video-based DVDs during that time and I haven't experienced ANY lip-syncing problems. I've watched a large number of DVDs with varying content/sound options/aspect ratios--"Dawn Of The Dead '78 and '04; Star Wars Trilogy; Eternal Sunshine; Adam's Rib; Abbott & Costello Volume One; Mean Girls; Philip Marlowe Collection; SCTV Vol. 1; Giants & Toys; Freaks; Horror of Dracula; The Sopranos; Amiee Mann Live; John Cale's Fragments Of A Rainy...I could go and on. No problems with any of them. I have my SP-1000 hooked up through coax digital, optical digital, and multichannel analog to my Onkyo 797 receiver. I've also tried multi-channel analog for some DVDs to let the SP-1000 do the decoding instead of my receiver. No problems that way, either.

(I also play lots of CDs, DVD-As, and SACDs on the player. Just picked up the newly rereleased in SACD surround format, "Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, and Madman Across The Water." They sound SO nice. This player's CD capabilities have enticed me to go back and start relistening to lots of my CDs, also.)

I honestly think the BTB issue will be resolved by Onkyo so you'd be in the clear if that's the only problem you're experiencing.

Let us know what you think of the player when you get it and if you encounter any problems.

(BTW, I'm also a disillusioned Denon ex-customer.)

(And we owners of the 10.5/SP-1000 are the ones on the other side! ;) )

They don't have it in stock.

Eric,
If you do get it, the thrill of the chase will be over.... Also, since it is not in stock, by the time they get it, you may have enough money for the 5910. :)

OK - How's this everyone - especially the timing of it.

I just now (literally) received the following in an email:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We are sending you a firmware update. We are still researching your questions below, we will e-mail you back with an answer. The update CD should arrive in about a week. Please e-mail your shipping address to us so we can send out the disc."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you go.

I have asked what the update includes. When/if I find out, I will pass the info along.

Awesome news dave considering... I JUST BOUGHT ONE!!!! :D Guess who's off the fence at last! :) I called that retailer and got THE LAST ONE! Can you imagine that? LOL!

Wow. Well, let me start handing out the thank you's to EVERYONE's patience with me over the weeks as I've dug, sifted, sniffed, questioned, and destroyed. ;) It feels DAMNED good to have months worth of research, demoing, questioning, doubting, and sampling to finally finish my HT off with the Onkyo 1000. It's not cheap, but I KNOW it's a great buy, especially at the price I got it for.

Earz, Franchot, Larry, joecowboy, and everyone in this thread and that Integra thread I owe a special thank you to.

Now: I look forward to your tips and advice for setting this bad boy up! :D

Better alert the webmaster at AVS Forum that he can now downsize to a smaller server since you won't be posting to the Denon, Sony, Panasonic, Marantz, Samsung, Toshiba, Momitsu, Yamaha, and Bravo DVD player threads asking a multitude of questions.

Just kidding ya, Q! :D

Congratulations! I hope to see a big, long review from you after you get your player.

I'll work on it, but I'm not sure it may not be the technial journal that some of the rest of you could whip up. I'll do my best to take it past "WOWWWWW!!!" :D

Question: Should I buy an adapter like one of these: http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI-hdmi_adapt.html Or just buy an HDMI-DVI cable outright?

Trash talking is one of my specialties. :D Nah, it's not fair for me to do that since I couldn't demo all of those units. I know I probably would have been happy with just about any of those. This deal was just too good. Damn you, Earz! I wasn't ready to spend this kind of money yet! ;)

It's rather telling that I don't feel any buyer's guilt right now, and I really should. ;)

Edit: I think I'm just going to buy an HDMI-DVI cable vs. an adapter. I just feel more confident about that. RAM's new Rev2's look nice and a good price.
We need to get the Integra thread merged with this one...don't you guys think?

BTW - In my note back from Integra, they confirmed that for SACD playback, there is NO PCM conversion before going to analog. It is simply DSD -> DAC -> Analog output. There was some confusing conversation regarding this in the Integra thread many pages ago. That is what prompted me to ask the question.

Once again, I am posting this in both the Integra thread and the Onkyo Thread.

That's great! Especially since the site said out of stock.

And, I agree, go for the cable. In general, adapters suck. And in this case it adds more weight to the cable which stresses the HDMI input connector (the worst thing about HDMI).

Great, maybe you can pass it around when your done as I have heard nothing as of yet.

Did you ask for a region free upgrade as well:)

[b]It's not a DVE problem. I have both DVEs. The newer DVE has an updated pluge reference that shows an extra gray bar(2% i think?). Depending when you called them... there may have been some miscommunication issues regarding what was seen in the lab.

Supposedly, the firmware has fixed all BTB issues when using HDMI <> HDMI/DVI.

mitsguy,
Make sure your dealer has a good return policy just in case you run out of options. I'm sure Onkyo will fix any issues on their flagship model. Check the other Integra 10.5 thread for more info on user reported issues.

I haven't seen audio sync problems with film based DVDs, but seen it with Eagles and The American President. Others have confirmed sync issues with the Eagles. Hoping it's not a video based DVD issue. I need to find more time to do additional testing.

I watched a couple dozen episodes of trhe family guy whithout problem, but rarely watch tv shows on dvd format.

If you want a real reference movie to watch, check out Underworld superbit as its as close to real hi def as your likely to see.

OK, here is a very dangerous question. What Wolfson DAC is being used in this player? (Earz - you made me ask)

And you think there list is up to date because? :)

If you really need to no, you need to contact Wolfson, not Onkyo imo.

BTW.... I hope your right though...and the 7819 number came from another audio board and could very well be wrong.

If I wasn't so busy with work right now, I might have a look for myself, but no time for that unfotunatley.

I will try myself.

I will call Wolfson this morning and try to get an answer before they leave for the weekend. It is late over there though, so don't expect much today.

Hey everyone, thanks for threads (both this one and the Integra 10.5 thread) on these machines! I've been researching a new universal player recently, and almost went for the 3910...until I read all of the rave reviews on here.

As luck would have it, I did a search the other day and found the 'amazing' online offer that several of you have mentioned here. Fortunately, I got in before they ran out of stock. So, as of next wednesday (11/17), I will be the latest owner of a brand new SP1000...can't wait! Just sold my Pioneer Elite DV-45A as a partial downpayment... :D

It is pretty amazing, but if you've checked that deal out for yourself, and you can see one post above mine here someone else did...you can see how it finally put a foot to my butt and knocked me off the fence. It really got to the point yesterday where I would have been foolish not to take a deal like that.

I went ahead and got one of those nice new Rev2 6 foot HDMI-DVI cables from RAM. An extra $15 or so over an adapter finishes it off without margin for error at that rate.

As I always do, I will register this with Onkyo as soon as I've received it and tested it out. When I do this, does this put me down for any firmware upgrades or would I need to make an extra effort to contact Onkyo and request any firmware?

About Wednesday of next week is going to be pretty exciting! Again, I think it's very telling that, even a good night's sleep (that speaks for itself, too), I still don't feel any buyer's guilt. :)

You all have been invaluable and beyond patient. Typical of what AVS is all about and why this is one of my favorite haunts on the entire Internet. :)

To get a jump on the firmware, simply email Onkyo or Intergra through their "contact" page on their website. That is how I received the message I posted earlier. I had asked several question regarding my player. I have not sent in any registration yet.

Awesome. Will do. Just curious: How's come you haven't registered yet? I usually do that rather promptly once I know I'm not making an exchange on a defective item or something like that.
