About to buy Onkyo SP-1000 please comment - Page 3

I'll throw in a thanks to you guys also for the heads up on the SP1000 special. After clicking the "email when available" heading on their page, I received an email (last night) that it was available at that very respectable price. Needless to say I jumped; especially knowing that they have a 30 day return policy. I'm hoping my studio experience 20HD LCD projector will be able to handle the HDMI connection (with a little help from a special amplification switch). Once again, thanks for everyone's input.

Congratulations to all you soon-to-be new owners. Please post back your observations once you've had a chance to mess around with the player. I'm always interested to read what others think of this machine since I hold this player in such high regard.

I've seen that low price that most of you are paying and while I got a respectable discount on my player, you people scored a nice bargain. What was the shipping cost on your player? (Maybe I can make myself feel a little better that all you lucky sons-of-guns didn't completely blow my discounted deal out of the water. :( ) (Yeah, and I'm not forgetting the Los Angeles sales tax which I paid at the B&M store where I purchased mine. )

Dave,

I agree that it would be nice to merge the threads, but who has the weight around here to get it done. Q maybe? And thanks for the heads-up on the firmware fix. My player is registered through Onkyo's website, but I have a feeling that they're not going to go through their database to e-mail their customers about the patch.
Will do, Franchot (re: posting of results).

Sorry to tell you, but shipping was free, and no tax either!
No shipping, no tax, baby! I even sprung for a five year extended parts and labor warranty for $80. :D

I just PM'd both Larry and David about merging these three threads:

I use a 6 channel preamp so the player has to do all the decoding. Can anyone tell me what kind of bass management the Onkyo has? Thanks.
It does BM for both SACD and DVD-A at a fixed 80 Hz.

Argh! You guys! The only thing I need to hear to further depress me is that Scott Peterson was found "Not Guilty."

Seriously, I'm happy you all got such a great deal. Even though I could have waited and not paid as much, I can't complain too much because I've already had two months of top-notch movie watching and music listening.

It all works out. :D

So, I wonder if the 80hz fixed crossover is a requirement of the THX Ultra certification? Anyone else know how this certification is earned, or what it gives us?

Excellent question! I was wondering that myself: What things merits a THX Certification?

Just click on "report this post to moderator" and include the links to this thread, the Integra thread, and the "upconversion on SP-1000 thread" and any others, and ask the mod to change the title to "Official Onkyo SP-1000 and Integra DPS-10.5 DVD players thread". You may want to "report" the original thread so it can be the "master", the thread that is merged into.

Would someone please just put a link in this thread. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe that is against the forum regulations.

www.vanns.com sale until 11-16-04. Make sure you call them on the phone to check availability. 100 percent legit, authorized Onkyo Internet dealer. I checked them out with Onkyo themselves.

Just called, they out of stock for now. Next shipment around
the 1st week of Dec. Will emailed when in stock. At this time
they cannot give price on new shipment, it depends at their
next allotment's cost.

It will be very interesting to see if they have another comparable sale like that in lieu of the holidays or not. I certainly would recommend keeping a close eye on them, as they were the best deal by far that I had seen for any legit and authorized dealer out there.

Gives more time to see what the Denon 5910 will be like.

$4000+, coming out no earlier than first quarter of next year? If even that? We'll see if you can wait that long... :D

Could someone who owns the SP1000 please take a few digital pics of the reference images from DVE while in 720p and 1080i (use any of the images, I don't care, plus some movies if you'd like ;)? If so, I would greatly appreciate it (and I'm sure others would as well).

I just purchased a Denon 2910 and a Panasonic AE700. The 2910 has some issues and I am thinking of just upgrading to the SP1000 to be done with all of them.

Thank you very much.

There's no question that the SP-1000 is better player than the 2910 in all aspects. But, you need to see for yourself with your projector.

Larry should know by now, on cue, what I'm going to say.

"The SP-1000 'smokes and burns' the Denon 2910!" :D

I've received a lot of PMs on this. Let me try this again for everyone's benefit. :)

www.vanns.com. 100 percent legit, authorized, checked out with Onkyo, you name it. Good to go! :)

Get on their email notification list and work their phone.

Out of fairness, they say the sale ends on 11-16, but if they're out of stock and they have a lot of demand, hopefully something can get worked out. You'll see the price for yourself. Try to keep from tripping over your jaw. :p

Eric,
I think you and whoever else slipped in "under the wire" got the deal of the year. I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see the next batch be priced higher. Although, I hope not, so the others who want one can get a good deal too.

I hope so. I feel INCREDIBLY lucky and fortunate, and I really owe Earz a big thanks for PMing me that lead when he saw it. According to vanns.com, when I called them, I got the last black Onkyo 1000 that they had in stock.

This and the Pioneer 59avi at $989 are the Deals of the Year that I've run across personally myself.

I always try to return favors and "spread the love", as it were.

I will most certainly be keeping an eye on vanns.com and other places for deals since it's obvious the word is getting out and demand increasing signifigantly on this amazing unit.

Again, I recommend to anyone interested in this unit, put yourself on the email notification list at vanns.com or the website of your choice. (Vanns seems to have the best price on this for authorized dealers by far.) Just make sure it's an authorized dealer, wherever you go.

Lobby them and make a habit of calling them a couple of times a week.

I hope Vanns can and does extend or repeat that sale, because I'm sure they already have seen increased demand just from this thread here.

I'll help everyone as best I can! Good luck! :)

I'll second the advice to sign up for email notification. When I called them late last week, they said they were out of stock and that it would be a few weeks before more units showed up. They said to be sure and sign up for the email since those people would know before the sales force. Late the very next day I received an email that they were available. I pounced on it, and within a few hours they were gone again.

I can't emphasize this enough, as I've had probably a dozen PMs since we broke the news about this place a few days ago.

Make sure, if you're interested, you're on vanns.com notification list by the 16th.

This way, you're on record with them as having been down for it BEFORE the sale deadline is up. After doing this, CALL THEM! Speak to someone with a pulse and make sure they'll honor that sale price when they receive new inventory, regardless of date.

The idea is: As long as you were on record BEFORE the end of the sale timeline, I can't see why they wouldn't honor the sale price. This is how you cover your own arse on this thing. ;)

If you're interested, just don't waste any time. You're under no commitments or obligations to actually buy the unit if you put yourself on email notification.

Do this, and call them on the phone every few days or so. And if you get an email that says it's in, call them to place the order to make doubly sure.

Also make sure to ask about extended warranties, as I couldn't find them on their site but they do offer them. 3 years for $60, 5 years for $80 extended parts and labor. Concurrent with the existing Onkyo warranty that comes with the unit. I sprung for 5 years considering how good these prices were. Highly recommended! :)

Darn! Just got off the phone from that Montana dealer. I purchased the Onkyo SP1000 on Thursday after email notification on their web site. They sent me the billing information, but no tracking number (my credit card was charged). I called Friday, and they confirmed that it would ship. After some research today, they determined that the web page allowed a few orders to go out after the unit was sold out. I guess I'm back on email notification. Just a heads up.

This merits a:

That's really weird. Unfortunate.

I was lucky. When I got the email notification, I called them to make absolutely sure it was for real and placed the order over the phone. The guy said I got the last black one in stock. I never asked him about silver. You must have come right after I finished my order because I was past 8pm EST when I made that order on Thursday night.

That's what I recommend to everyone: If you're serious about buying it, as soon as you see that email, call them up during business hours and order it over the phone. And don't forget to ask about extended warranty! They don't show those on their site, as best I can tell, so I was glad I asked!

Sorry this didn't work out for you. Certainly for this inconvenience, they should honor that sale price for you regardless of dates. I know you'll get it and this minor hassle wil be more than worth it in the end. :) I think they can and should honor the sale price for anyone that gets on email notification by Nov. 16. I hope they do. I'd certainly ask them over the phone to do so.

One very minor concern I have is that mine shipped out Friday, sat in a UPS warehouse all weekend, and won't get to me until the 18th. However, I'm encouraged by the fact that my package weights 40 lbs! I know the unit ways considerably less than that, so I'm confident they packaged this thing like Fort Knox.

I probably did order about a half hour after you. I ordered it through the web that night, but I did try to confirm it on Friday. The rep said everything went through fine, though.

I also just received another call from them apologizing for the mix up. Apparently, there were a few other orders that went out after they were sold out. He also said that they have had a bunch of calls since last week about the player. I'm sure this thread has helped. They did say that they would still honor the price if I put my name on email notification by tomorrow. I really didn't want them to keep the charge on my card without the player and they agreed. Still seems to be a pretty good company to work with and hopefully they will come through with more inventory shortly.
