When trying to play HL2 via DVI on HDTV-"Failed to set video mode"

Anyone come across this error? When I try to fire up HL2 or counter-strike for that matter I get the following error.

"Failed to set video mode"

And then give me an option to launch the game with different settings. When I first got Counter-Strike:source I was getting this error launching the game with both my DVI-HDTV and VGA hooked up. When I would reboot with just the VGA hooked up to my LCD, it works fine.

I decided I wanted to check out HL2 on the HDTV, so I tried the reverse, reboot with just DVI hooked up and when I launch the game I'm getting the same error. I can play in widescreen, but it's not 1280X720p.

Any thoughts?

This happened to me the first time I set HL2 for 1280x720. It then started in window mode next and I set it back to to 1280x720. After that it worked fine.

It wont allow me to select 1280X720 as a resolution after I've gotten the error. It will do the same though, load the game in a window and I can select some resolutions, just not this one.

I'm still trying to find a fix, I'm thinking the ATI dongle is my only option.
