I recently purchased a Sharp LC-45GX6U and was curious to know if anyone has successfully used any of the JVC D-VHS decks with this display via the i.Link (firewire) connection or via HDMI on the 5U?
For those of you who are not familar with the Sharp, it has an external AVC box that has a pair of i.Link ports, and the ability to control a D-VHS deck (indeed, unfortunately, this seems to be the only type of firewire device that will work via these ports). I have successfully used VirtualDVHS with my Mac to playback transport streams to the display -- they look completely pristine, essentially the same as when I play them back when driving the display as a second monitor on my Mac (at 1080p).
I'm curious to hear if folks have any thoughts on whether, if I purchase a JVC 5U, if I should output from the JVC to the Sharp via HDMI or firewire. I don't see any reason not to use firewire, especially since I'll be able to control the deck via the TV remote that way. I also would like to hear opinions or insight into whether the HDCP glitches I've heard about with the 5U over HDMI are likely to be equally invident when outputting via firewire.
Lastly, I had a CableCard installed in the Sharp this week (again, in the AVC) and I fully expect to be able to record to a DVHS deck the programming that is available via the CableCard -- the Sharp manual gives every reason to believe that digital programming is recordable in this fashion, and I think this is more or less the industry vision of how CableCard + i.Link can work. I was wondering if anyone out there had any experience with this scenario.
Cheers,
Rob
