Maybe now the courts have rejected the broadcast flag they are ready to move on to a new generation and are trying to flush out inventory.

The walmart I saw them at is in a somewhat "ghetto'ish" neighboorhood, so I was surprised they carried such a product. They were stuck on an endcap with a bunch of random stuff. They had like 3 sealed ones, and one without the wrapping. I didn't pick one up, but I'm considering it since they are soooo cheap.

Wal-Mart usually has fire sales on merchandise that doesn't move within some period.
Actually, I've never seen these boxes at my local store.
Me either.

My local Walmart has a huge HDTV section right in the middle of the electronics area full of "HD Ready" plasma, LCD, and DLP sets, but not a single STB to be found.
At every Walmart I've seen them at, they been with the antennas/cables section, never with TVs.
Ok, that is good to know. So, WM doesn't think TV.STB and cable/antennas are associated? lol

The one time I went looking for them I also failed to find them and had to ask for assistance. They were pushed back on some bottom shelf somewhere but they did have a couple.

My Receiver feeds a Mitsubishi WT-42315 HDTV and a Sony HT-DDW660 Home Theater system. The DB-2010 remote works with the TV signal, but I am not getting it to work with the Audio. Only Sony's remote can control the Audio level. I am therefore using 2 remotes.

Should the DB-2010 remote be able to control the volume to any device? I assumed it would. The remote controlled the Audio when I first got the receiver and the Audio out was going to the TV directly, before I bought the Home Theater.
I have just learned that the Digital audio does not really have a volume, and that it is not until it reaches the Sony that it can be controlled. Makes sense!

I think the best option now is to find a learning remote, since I have not seen the US Digital (or Hisense) listed as a supported product. Does anyone know of a universal learning remote that can control the DB-2010? Of course the Sony and Mits won't be an issue.

Update:

I went to my nearest WM and they only had the display model on the shelf, which in reality was an empty box. I had them run the SKU for pricing and it was $198 and change. This must be a localized thing.
Does the same company that makes this unit make the Humax?
No, the Walmart unit is made by Hi-Sense
Well they are etheir near the ants or under the lcds in a cornner. If not then that store no longer has it as many of their consumer tvs have the atsc tunner built in now. The 30 32 28 and 27 sanyo flats have the atsc tunner built in as well as the 52 rca that sells for 1500 bucks or so.

But that usdigital does not sell very well and the ones that do come back. I'm guessing walmart will be selling the rca listed on their site or the LG that is used to feed the hd displays.
I just picked up one for $35 at the local walmart off the open Item/ display model shelf! Only issue is no remote. I wonder if there are any Universals with this thing pre programed in? Any suggestions. For $35 I could not pass it up.
I think the general idea is to avoid paying $200, arxaw.

There is a new USDigital STB with 5th gen tuner chips that will be out as soon as the DB-2010 inventory is depleted.

Yes! That was the new I was hoping to hear. However I've also heard the next gen USD box won't be using the LG 5th gen chip so I guess we will have to wait and see what they announce.

I posted that info based on an email sent to me from someone at
USDTV.
Of course, they could be wrong, too!
arxaw -

I believe my info was also supposedly from USDTV, but indirectly via the OpenDTV list and not very current. Hopefully yours is the most correct and up to date, assuming any other 5th gen tuners can perform as well as the one mystery box that we all have heard about at Mark Shubin's apartment.

I'd rather see $50 ATSC STBs than 5th generation STBs for $200.

I'd rather see $50.00 5th generation STBs, but that is not going to happen really soon.
Does anyone know what model number will be on the 5th gen box? I believe it will continue being made by HiSense. I hope they get rid of the beady green eyes that the DB2010 has.

I don't think we'll ever see many new OTA-only STBs. There's just not enough demand for them by the general public. The majority of people who watch DTV do so using an HD cable box or HD satellite/ota box.

Also, the electronics industry would much rather sell you a new TV or VCR/DVD recorder with a built in DTV tuner than sell a standalone DTV tuner. All of these that have built in analog-only tuners will have to include built in digital tuners before the analog shutoff date.

I do agree. But I also think the majority of people in this country are not going to run out and by a new TV to replace a working TV especially if there will be government subsidies on STBs. They will wait until their current set no longer powers up.
Could you imagine commercials like... "Tired of paying for rate increases on cable? Tired of paying five dollars a month for your free local channels? Did you know with an antenna you can get crystal clear digital channels, including high definition? Check out our website for more details, www.localaffiliate.com.
Wouldn't it be nice if the broadcasters promoted their digital signals?
GSfromCT,

We have one local channel here that does promote their free OTA digital channel, using short commercial spots. I suspect they are not exactly pleased with their arrangements with Comcast.

I think too many are already living on non-OTA paths or that its just not as important to them in their lives. Television is a personal choice of luxury. Unless you can take physical shelter in it, wear it, or eat it, its not necessary.

TheFerret: True, very true. Just plug in the cable and you are all hooked up.
I guess it is just me and people like me who feel the cable cos do not have a right to raise rates whenever they feel like it. I voted with my money and have not looked back at cable.

Budget_HT: That is great to hear. I guess sometime in the future all broadcassters will have a digital section on their website too. Who knows.

Now to get back on topic. I saw an open box DB2010 on the clearance shelf at walleyworld yesterday. It as marked all the way down to 178.00. Sheesh
post #148 of 1562
Don't know if this the right place or not, but I took all of your suggestions to try the US Digital tuner in the San Bernardino, CA area to see what I get. Trouble is... I plug everything in, then plug in the USD Box and it automatically comes on. Signal and Power lights are green, but nothing shows on the screen. Pushing the power button or anything on the remote does nothing. Only way to shut off USD box is to unplug. I know I have the TV set to the right input. What's the deal...broken?

How is the firmware updated if you use the box in a non usdtv area?

My local walmarts do not have this unit. I found it on their website only, for $198.

They'll send you a USB drive and a postage prepaid envolpe. Plug it in, it will upgrade, send the drive back. I bought two at $100 last month, if you are interested, PM me.
