Thank You that is the Part # I ordered, I just learned it is on back order!@
post #1082 of 1108
I just want to thank everyone for their hard work and tenacity on helping us lesser folks, (I'm an automotive guy) install parts in our DLP's. Mine was a HLP5063WX/XAA sammy that has been whining for 3 years. The tiny weedwhaker was my favorite analogy. I watched the video posted by others and read 8+ pages from this forum at least two times each. It took me about 3 hours for the whole color wheel job but I was VERY careful with each step. I did not have to go back to re-do anything. I noticed the new color wheel was very different from the old and assumed it was the 'air bearing' version, so I pulled the jumper before I put the set back together. My index delay started at 39. Going to 31 made it worse. 49 was perfect. I also changed the gamma setting from 2 to 0. Better picture than new, and the weedwhacker has run out of gas. No buzz.
On adjusting the index delay, I let 'ghost whisperers' play in the background while changing the values in the DDP1011 menu. The clay faces came right out as stated by others and the picture just looked better with the gamma at 0. I'm not messing with perfection. I always liked this tv and hated the thought of tossing it for a $120 part.
Thanks again to all who helped me and I hope this note may help someone else.

Good for you man.
I too just replaced my color wheel without a hitch, thanks to the guys 5 part Youtube video.
However my situation was different, when my color wheel went there was no warning, hence I was out of a TV. I then ordered the color wheel putting a $50 overnight on it, only to get an email the next day claiming the part was on back order, and they did not know when it would come in? It forced me to look at new displays while I was waiting on my part.
I couldn't help but notice how much better the picture was on the newer Plasma, and Lcd sets. I eventually caved and pulled the trigger on a 58" plasma. Best picture I have ever seen for half what I paid for the DLP. The next day my part came in of course.
The moral of the story is; if you leave a man hanging too long, you will get replaced!

I am hoping someone out there can help me with two problems I am having. When I turn on my TV, the video goes crazy. The images will be scrambled and jumping all over the place until the TV has been on for about 30 minutes and then it will be just fine. This happens everytime the TV is turned on.

Some background, I had to replace the lamp and then the color wheel about a year ago. The second problem started about a year ago roughly after the color wheel was replaced. I now get six wavy vertical lines on the screen that are roughly equally spaced. They tend to be more visible with certain colors specifically a green when watching football. Any ideas on the cause of either of these?

Thanks

Hi could use some help, i just recieved an email from Samsung referencing a class action suit on my TV......talking about a Shadow Effect and b/c of that they are extending the warrenty to April 2011.....

i have noticed what i call ghosting on my Sammy, but i am not sure what the shadow effect it?

can anyone describe it?
Yes I recieved the same email, and just deleted it: I have had nothing but a great experience with my DLP.
As a matter of fact I may write a letter of dissagreement to the courts .
I'm wondering about this "shadow effect" as well. The one thing I noticed that was annoying to me was the dark "splotches/smudges" when you have white backgrounds. By the time I wanted to fix it my warranty was out. I guess this could be the "shadow effect".

I read about it and it turned out it was how they pressed together two screens together. See this: http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/.../t-476437.html

Do you think this is what they're talking about?

By the way, I have the: HLP6163W (still on my original bulb) - don't use it too much as I got the 67" LED about 16 months ago.

I figure if they'll fix it for free or give me some money off on an LED, why not?

Thanks, Nick

Nick, I hear ya.....I have had to replace the bulb twice, but both under warrenty..........I am not sure what they are talking about, but if I could get some money off, i think i will call as well...

what are you going to do?
I'm not sure, but I think I'll call that Samsung number and see what they say. I'm kind of lazy when it comes to things like that though, so I'm not sure when I'll call, maybe tomorrow. Called DirecTV today to get my bill lowered and my DVR upgraded. Need to call AT&T because my DSL promotions died off too, so then I have to call Samsung too!

Thank you everyone. Just replaced the colorwheel on my HLP5063WX/XAA (thanks to all the help I received here) and everything working fine.
Hi all,

Just came across the forum and hopefully I can figure something out. I have a Samsung 50" DLP (model HLP5063wx/xaa) that I turned on one day and it made a screeching sound with no picture. I ordered a color wheel and replaced it. The original one was shattered, so I felt I was on my way to fixing it.

After putting it together and turning it on, there was no noises or clicking and no picture. The Lamp and Standby/Temp lights blink on the front button. There is no sound, but I do not have it hooked up to a cable box, since I moved it downstairs to work on it.

Any thoughts or things I should look at? Could it be the bulb and or the ballast? I checked to make sure the wires are all plugged back in and they seem to be. Everything worked fine before the day the color wheel started making noises.

Thanks!
Eric

Hey,

I have a hlp5063wx xaa and while playing xbox and loud noises happen such as explosions and flash bangs the screen goes completely black then comes back on a couple seconds later. If any can help me find out what this problem could be that would be great.

Thanks

Unit: Samsung HLP5063wx.
Problem: TV made a cracking sound and the screen went black. LAMP indicator started flashing. I went online and bought a new lamp. Replaced it and now when I turn it on I get no picture and all three indicator lights blink on the front of the unit. If I try to turn on the power it clicks like it is going to come on but has no picture and the now the LAMP indicator is the only one flashing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello fellow HLP owners. We have had our HLP4663XAA since September '04 It's had one lamp, and just had the color wheel replaced due to the color wheel whine. I just noticed the picture is cut off a tad at the bottom. Any way to adjust that via menus? Thanks in advance!

PS. I am not a do it yourselfer on electronics. The guy who replaced the wheel told me, when I called him, that such noises are the wheel, not a fan, because the TV will shut down if the fan is not functioning. He also said you can run with a noisy wheel for awhile if you can stand it. I wonder about this, because I read in this thread that these can shatter. Is a noisy wheel more likely to shatter? The noise was not constant.
My Samsung TV has started making a screeching noise on startup and shutdown, I am wondering if this is a fan, but see on the threads here that the color wheel also apparently makes this type of noise as well. As it is over 5 years old I am wondering if having it worked on is a good move or is it time for a new set.

I got the color wheel on my HLP4663 replaced for $250 last week. I found the part online for between 110 and 190 and i didn't want to fight with the replacement procedure myself. When the lamp goes aim going to get it replaced as well. Still less than buying a new tv and still a great picture!
Bought my 6163 in July of '04. Other than the lamp dying a year and a half ago I've had zero problems, love the TV and the picture. All good things come to an end unfortunately.

I was watching football a couple of weeks ago and noticed the Patriots were wearing pink pants, hmmmm. Didn't really notice any color problems with the feed from my HTPC or BlueRay, just on cable. So the problem may not be with the Sammy. I did switch the box and composite cables with another set in the house, problem persists. Now I notice an abundance of pinkness on all channels. Color wheel? Light engine? Or? (Honey its 6 years old!)

Anyway, long story short, I started looking at new sets. All I can say is WOW! The plasmas in particular are amazing. Just ordered an LG Infinia 60PK750 from Amazon, way less then 1/2 what I paid for the Sammy. Ain't technology grand?

I don't post much but I lurk a lot and have learned a lot from the AVS forums, thanks to all who share their knowledge with the rest of us!

My 5063w was purchased in 04 I think. I have gotten good life out of it. I replaced the bulb about 8 months ago because I figured it needed it. Then the color wheel went. I replaced that and the tv worked great. Only other problem I had was one of the component inputs didn't work. If I had the tv plugged into it or dvd the vertical hold would go and the picture would scroll up. Now the newest problem. I turn it on and get no picture, no bulb lit. 3 lights on the front blink. Is this the ballast? I have other tvs so I don't really need this one but would like to give it to a friend if I can get it to work. The picture was still really excellent! Help please!

It can also be the color wheel if I remember correctly from about 3 years ago. Do you still have the previously replaced color wheel? I reinstalled the old, noisy color wheel that previously replaced and the set powered up.

I got a 6187s in 2008. The picture and the sound was so much better than the 5563. You had a good run with the 5063. Treat yourself to a new set. You've earned it!

Thanks dengland. I did treat myself to a new tv but I wanted to repair this one to give to a family member who could really use it. Unfortunately the old color wheel was too far gone and cracked. I already threw 200 into it this year, another 100 or so for a ballast would suck but I think I'd do it if I knew that was the fix

Thank you all for this wonderful thread. I just got a HLP5063xw xaa for the cost of a color wheel, and I couldn't have done it without you.

Monday night is trash night in my neighborhood, and I've taken to walking around with a friend of mine and seeing if anything good has been thrown out. Two weeks ago, we found this TV. We decided it was worth plugging in - the worst that would happen is we would put it back out on the curb that night.

It turned on fine. In fact, everything seemed to be in order except for a horrible whine. 3 days later, the color wheel died completely. I replaced the wheel about a week later. The clay faces were out in force, which didn't bother me, but the image was also flickering randomly, which worried me. Once I found a universal remote though, I adjusted the index display and now everything is gravy.

Well, the image is a lot darker than I would prefer. It's fine at night, but it kind of sucks during the day. The service menu says about 9600 hours on the bulb, so I'm assuming that that's the problem.

Hey....nice going sbearg! This thread has helped me out a big deal as well. My HLP..63 is going strong after 7 years of heavy use and one bulb change out and one color wheel change.
I'm glad the parts are still availabe. I guess until the price of a 63" flat screen drops to that of a color wheel and bulb...I'll stick with mine.
The way the prices of the flat screens have been dropping....it may happen soon.

I own an HLP6163W. Do yourselves a favor and stop fixing these. If every two years you need a new color wheel, consider sinking it into a work-free LCD. Get a warranty on the unit. If it blows up you get it fixed free.

While the DLP's were an engineering marvel so to speak, they also were a widespread beta test that should not have been released without further tweaking from the manufacturer. These tv's do not last long. You'll fix them, and a year later end up spending a ton more on the same issue.

Color wheels, light engines, ballasts, digital boards, and lastly the bulb all typically blow up. I have had a a few cheapo dell LCD monitors running most of the day since 2002/2003 and run without a hitch. I'm sure the big ones are still doing the same for most people if running in the right environment. These DLP's are ****. Stay away.
I would phrase it differently. If you have been watching a HLPXX63W you owe it to yourself to get a TV that is 8 years newer. The 2007 I replaced my HLPXX63W with was night and day difference better both in picture and in audio. I played the CW replace game twice with the HLPXX63W.

I have to totally dissagree with you on the crap part. It's easy to say that now given the technology explosion we have been a part of over the last 5-10 years, but when I bought my DLP in 2004 it was the best picture on the planet, it still had and may still have the best sounding onboard speakers, and I personally got 12000 hours out of my initial bulb. I swapped the first bulb myself after spending $140 on parts, and swapped my own color wheel also. I gave it away a year later because Technology had passed the DLP by with improved picture quality and performance. I went with another Samsung but Plasma this time.
So having said all that I feel a sort of loyalty to the DLP after nearly 8 yrs of quality audio/video performance.

Hi. Yes, i still have this TV in operation. Just this week, when I'm on the HDMI input, the signal seems to lack all green. When I switch to the TV input, color is fine. The HDMI color is bad regardless of what's connected to the HDMI port. Any ideas? (Just doing due diligence before pulling the trigger on a new TV. I hadly use this one though, so wanted to see if there's a quick fix.

Have you tried more than one HDMI source and more than one HDMI cable in order to prove it is the TV end?
Yes. It's bad whether anything is plugged in or not.
