Ever see this game system? - Page 2

I still have my CD-I. Nintendo made some Zelda games for it. I loved having an arcade perfect Dragons Lair and Space Ace. I also enjoyed Burn Cycle.

I'm almost positive the Duo came first, because I bought mine at a Fred Meyer's when I was living in Seattle, which was 1992-1994... So the Duo HAD to have come out in or before 1994, when I left Seattle (sorry, while I still have and use the Duo, I've long since lost the sales receipt ;) )

Turbo CD game out way before Duo around 1991 or so. In order to play Super CD games you need an additional card. Sherlock Holmes was one of the first Turbo CD games.

Feh, I'd feel old if this arguement was about the pre-Atari 2600 systems.
"Coleco Telstar came out first!", "NO! The Bally Astrocade came out first!!!", etc :)

We all get 50 geek demerits for not mentioning the Atari Jaguar in our trip down nostalgia lane. ;)

I never owned a Jaguar, but it was a ground breaking system for its day.

I get my 50 geek points back, plus another 50, for owning two original Vectrex systems and most of the carts for the system. :D

I had an old Coleco Telstar Marksman Pong Clone with the light rifle...now that was big fun. I also remember how badly I wanted one of those Pac Man or Donkey Kong tabletop mini arcade games from Coleco when I was younger...Oh the days of the Sears Wish Book.

Only if you have the Jaguar CD add on :D

How many points do I get for being at the developer's conference in Vegas to see the unveiling of the M2 board?

:D

Jaguar = Crap.
(ducking and running)

I still have my original 1970's vintage Coleco Telstar. AND the box! :)
I love it....I'm sure it probably still works too. Its got that cool "Logans Run" 1970's retro styling in a white case that is now yellowing due to AGE....heh heh.

The funny thing is its just got the 2 or 3 pong games on it, but if you open it up (which I have)...the entire "system" is a small PCB about the size of a slice of toast, so the whole thing is like one giant empty case...with this tiny (by 1970's standards) pcb running the show. Heck I think the thing can even run on a couple of D batteries if you dont have an outlet handy.

In a way, I miss those days......because back then it was all "new and exciting". Partially because I was a youngin' then....but also because it was the tip of the wave.........today with XBOX and PS2 and beyond, we get pretty spoiled with our games.

Then again...with PS2 seeing GT3 for the first time and watching a replay from across the room, I did stop and say to myself "Damn...if the track-side details were just a little better, I'd swear I was watching a race on TV"....I suppose it can only get better....or if not better, than at least prettier....

While we're getting all misty- eyed and nostalgic about old systems like the
3DO and SEGA-CD ( I had both ) we shouldn't forget the abomination that *was* FMV. Remember "Sewer Shark" and all the other games with MPEG-1, grainy, scripted video? UGH!
Hey, I still have a soft spot for that game with Christopher Walken, the one that starts with Dont Fear The Reaper playing :) What was it.......gah I can't remember, it wasn't Phatasmagoria, was it???

Then again...when MYST, a screensaver pretending to be a game, goes on to sell more copies than doom...one must ask onself.....IS OUR WORLD TRULY WORTH SAVING!?!?! :)

...And if you meant you have the *Vectrex*, then you get your 100 geek points only if you have the electromechanical 3D glasses and game carts for the Vectrex ;).

I get bonus points for having all the screen overlays for the carts, too :D.

Feh, I've got a complete in box, unused Kmart branded Pong/shooting game system, dated 1975!

It has two slider paddle controllers with 5 pin DIN on the ends of the controller cables.

The system has a light pistol for shooting at the big dot on the screen.

Those were the days, when every store had their own brand of Pong- Monkey Wards, Sears, Kmart, etc...

Sega CD really was the beginning of the end for Sega.

K-Mart brand? What are you some kinda woman? :)

Sounds to me like a present from an extended relative! "ooooh..hey...uh, thanks...yeah..its...its LIKE Atari....yeah, thanks...oh, is there a receipt!?"

Wow- your memory of those video gaming Christmas's of yore is right on the money :D.

As a matter of fact, I was given the Kmart Pong system by a family friend who got it from a "favorite" aunt waaaay back then. It sat in his garage *unopened* until about 4 years ago, giving it to me when I was going through my classic video game collecting phase, attempting to buy back my youth on Ebay...

I scored a complete in box Atari 5200, original version, with complete in box Atari-branded 5200 Trackball and 20 carts in boxes with overlays at a garage sale in my collecting phase...

Ahh, Christmas of 1983/84 playing 5200 Football tournaments and Centipede marathons.
Are you kidding? We all got those "heeey...uh..thanks" presents. I mean, your grandparents didn't know the difference between an Atari VCS or a boardgame.....etc, etc ;) If it was electronic in the late 1970's and you were a young male, you got it......"Is that Atari?"...."yeah grandma, thats...sorta...atari...thanks!" :D

About 10 years ago, my buddy got ahold of several cases of boxed vintage cartridges when a local toystore went out of business.

Out of that haul I got a bunch of boxed and unopened Intellivision, Atari 7800, 5200, and 2600 carts, Colecovision carts, and I'm sure some other stuff in there.

The funny thing was watching the price-sticker progression..$39.99...$19.99...$9.99...$4.99...$2.99....$0.9 9 cents... :)

And finally "There are 5 boxes of unopened cartridges in the back room, help yourself".

I remember getting my Colecovision, driving module, 2600 expansion module for like $50 total (or something ridiculous) at KayBee toys with games for $.99...and thinking "man, this is GREAT!" Little did I know that the end of that generation was upon us. Economics doesn't mean a whole lot when you're like 8-10 years old.

What if you have TWO Jaguars + CD add-ons? (raises hand)

The full rundown (multiples means I snagged myself a backup unit somewhere along the way). Some of these are actually in storage nowadays in favor of emulators, but I keep the systems and cartridges around to "stay legal", and for COLLECTOR'S sake:
  • Atari 7800
  • 2 x Atari 5200
  • x Colecovision
  • Intellivision
  • Odyssey II (including a complete Quest for the Rings :D )
  • Vectrex
  • 2 x Jaguar + JagCD
  • Sega Genesis + Sega CD + 32X + Power Base Converter (plays Master System games on the Genesis, how many people have THAT add-on? :) )
  • SNES
  • NES (top-loader, dead front-loader somewhere in my storage boxes)
  • TurboDuo
  • Samsung N501 DVD/Nuon (still my primary DVD player, in fact)
  • 2 x Sega Dreamcast
  • Nintendo 64
  • XBox
  • PS/2
  • Gamecube
  • 2 x Atari Lynx
  • Sega Game Gear
  • Nintendo GBA
  • Nintendo DS

Oh, and 3 x Commodore 64's :D (These days, I think we can count that as an old classic console, not a computer ;) )

Ummm, I THINK that's everything. It's interesting to note that I never DID Get a 3D0 or a NeoGeo...

I'n not ready to crown you King of the VideoGaming Geeks, since I'm not sure if two Jags + CD expansions beat two complete Vectrex systems...

We are in awe of your impressive Gaming Geekitude, though.

The Power of the Geek Force is strong in you ;)

Right here :D.

Nice list, gregleg, but 20 geek demerits for missing the Virtual Boy and 3DO ;).

Yeah, I don't own the 3DO any more, but at least I *owned* one (two if you count the 3DO Blaster card :D) for several years...

I trump you with a perfectly working Sega Nomad- the handheld Genesis portable that uses all the regular Genesis carts. Looks like a bigger GBA, complete with color screen.

...And I don't know why so many people trash the NES front loaders- true geeks know that simply bending each leaf pin contact in the cart slot edge connector with a dental pick, to increase the contact force against the mating contacts on the game carts, is all that is needed to make the front loaders work fine. Cleaning the cartridge contacts with a pencil eraser works wonders on individual carts, too...

Exactly how I snagged the brand new complete Virtual Boy system, after it died in the market.

KB Toys can be a haven for some awesome deals...

Now that Christmas has come and gone, who will admit to picking up one of those all-in-one games+controller videogames?

The Pole Position/Galaga/Qix/etc joystick looked like an interesting deal for $15.

My mom wanted and got the mini-7800 system at Target. It was on sale for $34 before Xmas. I was disappointed how few (if any) 7800-code games there were in the system. Most (all?) were 2600 versions of the games. Given all the effort to make the system look and act like a 7800, why didn't they fill it with 7800 games, and the rest of the 2600 library they had a license to? It's not like all the games ever made for the 7800 exceed several hundred MB...

Your right about that Robb. I want to get a 3DO again (had the Panasonic one). Even though the frame rate of that game is slow, especially compared to racing/driving games these days, the game still ROCKS! IMHO. What was cool about was the traffic (other cars) and the INSIDE THE CAR VIEW POINT. Oh, and remember the track w/ the ice on the side of the rode.

Remember the track that had really steep long uphill part, it was kindy of foresty (I don't remember the name), but one time I managed to get the Ferrari to spin like a top (the toy) for a good few seconds. It was hiliarious. I don't recall exactly how I did it (if I was going uphill or down hill [against traffic]), but it was awesome. That's something I will never forget. I'm so proud (LOL!). I still talk about it today as you can see.

EDIT: I HAD THE FRONT LOADING PANASONIC (I didn't there was a top loading one. I knew about the GoldStar 3DO.) REMEMBER, WELL AT LEAST ON THE PANNY FLD, THERE WAS NO PLAYER 2 CONTROLLER PORT ON THE SYSTEM, YOU HAD TO PLUG THE CONTROLLER INTO THE TOP OF THE OTHER CONTROLLER.
I am a 3DO owner, I bought mine at Walden Software for $299 back in 1994 (Wow its been 10 years ago). I got the Goldstar because I liked the front loading design better than the flip-top design Panasonic had plus the Goldstar came with 2 games Shockwave & FIFA Soccer.

My favorite game was Need for Speed. The in dash view on that game was unmatched with photo realistic dashes and legible working gauges. The video clips with the "Opponent" was exclusive to the 3DO version, I think. I don't know how many different clips they made but it was a bunch. I remember one that I only saw once. I was playing around trying to wreck him as much as I could, when I finally finished and it played the clip he was waving a baseball bat. But I don't remember what he said.
Also does anybody remember the clips when you get arrested, funny stuff.

Ahh the memories, I might just have to get it out of the closet and dust it off and play some Need for Speed.
