What are your picks for best Xbox sports games, particulary for 2 and 4 player capability?

Football?
Baseball?
Basketball?
Hockey?
Soccer?
Golf?
Driving/Racing?

I'd like to do 4 player basketball, football, hockey, soccer and baseball at 9ft wide on my new AE700 ;)

MLB 2004 is in 720p and is a great game. Tiger Woods 2005 is also a great game. The only other sports game I've played is NCAA Football 2005 and it is just okay IMO.

Only one I have is really really good: Top Spin.

Martin.

As far as football games go you can't go wrong w/ Madden or NFL 2K5. There are pros and cons to each.

I'd have to give a slight edge to 2K5 though. Graphics are much better and I like the button mashing aspect for the running turbo as opposed to Madden where you just hold the button down. It adds a little more excitement when your buddy is trying to run you down from behind.

Golf to me is a no brainer- Tiger Woods

From what I've read and heard the only really good soccer games are the
EA FIFA games.

On the rest I'm not as familiar.

The best driving/racing game IMO is ToCA 2 followed closely by Project Gotham Racing 2.

Football? ESPN NFL 2k5
Baseball? Wait until this year. MVP would be a good option if it didn't have the lefty glitch and 'no improvement' franchise glitch.
Basketball? ESPN College Hoops 2k5
Hockey? ESPN NHL 2k5
Soccer? Winning Eleven 8 (i believe it's coming out for xbox this year--the ps2 version is easily better than fifa)
Golf? Links easily
Driving/Racing? PGR2

Thanks for the input, guys! It's always nice to avoid the stinkers out there ;)

Keep the recommendations coming...

I was leaning towards Links for golf based on the years of experience with it, all the way back to the 1980's on the Amiga/ST!

It appears the consensus is that the ESPN games rate better than the EA sports games. Good to know Sega it still a top notch sports game maker, carrying on the tradition from the Genesis and Dreamcast.

Any dissenting opinions re: the recommendations made here? Or are these the best of the best in these categories, particularly football, basketball, baseball, hockey and driving?

I picked up AMF Bowling in the bargain bin just for kicks, as my mom likes video game bowling. Seems OK, but I'm amazed how little the gameplay has changed from the late 1980's and 10th Frame by Access. Same aiming, power and curve type action buttons...

I'd also like a good pinball simulation game for the Xbox.

I have;
NFL Fever 2004 (I actually liked the Fever series quite a bit - good arcade/sim mix)
NFL Fever 2003
ESPN NFL 2K5 (best sim football game)
ESPN NHL 2K5 (Best Hockey series in my opinion)
ESPN NHL 2K3
Top Spin (really fun believe it or not)
Lnks 2004 (I like it but I haven't tried Tiger Woods to compare)
FIFA 2004 (good game)
Ralisport 2 (my favorite driving game)
Amped 2 (not bad)

Racing: TOCA 2 (ie Race Driver 2) is an amazing game, good graphics, realistic, can use a trigger as clutch, is you like simulator racers, thats the way to go

PGR 2 is more fun and a little less realistic, still has good physics, good selection of cars (although they forgot mine, 300zx TT, so boo), and a ton of tracks, I would vote PGR 2 as a better fun and multiplayer type game

Rallysport Challenge 2 - amazing game, if youre into Rally, then this is by far the best, tons of tracks and cars, and high speed rally drifting is always fun, looks great on HD also

Football: Madden 2005 for realism definately, if you just want crazy fun, then go for some Blitz

For NHL games you have to go with ESPN 2K5, I think it is a notch about EA's NHL 2005 and it has a lower price. Topspin is also a very good game.

Hockey: ESPN2K5
Basketball: ESPN2K5 (SIM)
Basketball: NBA Street (Arcade)
Baseball: MVP2004
Soccer: FIFA 2005 (our only choice)
Tennis: Top Spin
Racing: Project Gotham 2

Football? Madden 2005
Baseball? EA's MVP 2004, unless you need XBL support, then ESPN MLB 2k4
Basketball? ESPN NBA 2k5
Hockey? ESPN NHL 2k5
Soccer? FIFA 2005
Golf? Links 2004
Tennis? Top Spin
Driving/Racing? MotoGP 2, TOCA Race Driver 2

Most would agree, unless you're talking about football and baseball games. Basketball and Hockey, it's not even a contest, but football (NCAA and NFL) is a personal preference thing. Both ESPN NFL and Madden/NCAA from EA are good games, it's whatever you like best.

With MLB, ESPN's game is online this year, MVP won't be online until this spring. MVP is a better game IMO, but has quite a few bugs that keep it from being the best at this point.

Football Madden 2005 or NFL2K5
Baseball EA - MVP
Basketball NBA LIVE or NBA2K5
Hockey NHL2K5
Soccer FIFA 2005
Golf Tiger Woods
Driving/Racing Burnout 3, NFS:UG2 & Rallisport Challenge 2 (they are all good!)
