Not so fast. If you subscribe to cable/satellite you have no choice. You are forced to take these channels. So if you want to watch Game of Thrones on HBO, your are first forced to buy a cable package that includes these affiliates. The cable industry is now losing customers, lots of them, and the rate is increasing. It's a bad trend that won't look pretty in 20 years. (if it lasts that long)
In regards to the news, the highest rated news program, WSOC TV, has ratings of about ~100,000 viewers in a DMA that covers western NC. How many people is that, 3-4 million? That is a very small percentage of the total population especially considering that anyone with a cable or satellite subscription is forced to pay for this channel. The Charlotte Observer once had a circulation of over 650,000. I just looked it up, it's around 145K now. McClatchy's strategy of firing local reporters and replacing real journalism with generic articles and AP re-prints is what killed that paper. It's very similar to what broadcast TV is doing these days too.
This gets back to the point of this sub topic. That is, the FCC is considering auctioning off 1/2 of the remaining broadcast TV frequency spectrum so I"d say this isn't a minority view for it to have gotten that far. Their won't be any public protest if it does happen because the public, in general, doesn't care. Local TV isn't giving them a reason to care. Even many cord cutters don't consider OTA to be worth the time and effort to put up an antenna. However tell them that google will provide them a set top box for internet service that will use these former airwaves for bandwidth and they will get excited. This is where it's headed.Edited by blackcat6 - 10/18/13 at 3:04am
