Charlotte, NC - OTA - Page 231

The pic quality on the NBC NFL game looks very good tonight. On both WCNC-36 and WYFF-4. The Panthers game on CBS earlier was a tad noisy with a faint bit of macroblocking. But still looked pretty good. And about the same on WBTV-3 and WSPA-7.

Today's fully electronic phone system is quite different than the electro-mechanical system used in Charlotte & most of the phone system, when Sonic Man was on the Air here. smile.gif

I noticed this too on WBTV when they were doing a replay of it on the news. Maybe it came from CBS that way.

Front Hauls of the satellite feeds are very high bit rate for all networks, I did not watch the Panthers game but the SNF feed is a 25Mbps MPEG-4 that NBC broadcasts on a regular basis and there was not a difference in the bit rate last night compared to previous ones.

I don't think whether it was transmitted via satellite, fiber, etc or not would have much to do with it. More likely it occurred between the cameras on the field and the CBS facilities.

Yes, that is a front haul, CBS is 4.2.2....80 Mbps MPEG-2 pristine quality btw.

Now now ybsane..not everyone here has access to such pristine distribution feeds and therefore must watch OTA with subchannels. I am sure even less have high speed private & secure VPN's to tap into and see such content privately. wink.gif like the huge frigging pipe that zaxcom has down there in Ballantyne to feed the world....tongue.gif

Speaking of big fat pipes, anyone know who is behind or why they are pulling new fiber down residential streets in Huntersville? I've noticed it going on for the last few months all over town. The contractor's trucks don't have company names on them.

I don't think it's TWC since they just rebuilt the old crappy adelphia/prestige/lakeside cable system a few years back.

Something was clearly different last night with Sunday Night Football... the PQ hasn't been that good in years. I fully agree with the above post that it was better. CBS needs to do the same thing, their NFL PQ has become quite terrible on the locals. Sunday Ticket feeds are as wonderful as always.

I saw an advertisement for what's called "my fox carolinas" starting at 10p in January. The last WBTV regurgitated news broadcast will be on Dec. 31.

A couple of interesting points:

- WJZy produced news begins tonight but will only be streamed on-line.
- It will expand to 1 hour. (no doubt to do battle with WCCB and WSOC's regurgitated news on WAXN)

I wonder if WBTV will preempt Bounce and put their 10pm news there? Oh well, no matter.

If you are interested:

I guess this is a soft launch or rehearsal mode for the new 10:00 news on WJZY. I will be interested to see what the set looks like and the overall style of presentation. But they appear to be emphasizing social media as well, which I personally don't care for. I really don't care about what is trending on the Facebook or the Twitter. I just prefer reporting the hard news with some feature reporting thrown in. Although at times the Twitter can possibly be helpful when covering breaking news, but for the most part it is used as a platform for insignificant celebrity gossip. Which I could care less. And I don't have a Facebook page nor do I intend to. I don't want to publicly promote my own personal affairs, and I don't care about anyone else's either. Ridiculous.

And I suppose it is unlikely that WBTV will continue a 10:00 newscast. Although they have done better in the ratings recently. Unless they just stream it online. But as a business model, that is probably not beneficial, as they don't run the commercials online. And doubtful it would move to 3.2 as it would be disruptive to Bounce programming, and would probably be standard def resolution with the zoomed in picture. So not a good option.

The crowds and congestion continue at the Popeyes on Wilkinson Blvd. Cars wrapped around the building as seen in a WBTV Sky 3 video report. It did indeed make the local news coverage. About time Charlotte finally got a Popeyes again. But figures I am no longer in the immediate area. Although I may come up there to SouthPark Mall this weekend.
Unless they can come up with something new & different, or at least surprise us by actually reporting some real relevant real news, I'll probably just continue to tune in to WCCB.

I get a 10:00 news from WSPA on Channel 62, which is their CW affiliate. But I don't really care for the local FOX Carolina news on WHNS, but some folks here like their infotainment approach. But the SD video quality is not good. And speaking of pic quality, I certainly hope WCNC will finally upgrade to HD soon after Gannett takes over. Meanwhile, I will tune in to WJZY to see what they offer. But it will probably be a soft launch online for a few weeks until they get the kinks worked out. But it should be in HD when they go to air.

In reading about it a bit, I seems that Belo took on a lot of debt. Obviously they didn't spend the money on facilities and talent in CLT Gannett has assumed that debt as part of the deal. .

I get the feeling there is some slashing and burning coming to justify it. I suppose we will see, but I guess the end result won't be that much of a positive for the locals.

I wish that WCCB News Rising could trade Wilson to get Tera Blake back! I do miss her smile.

On the other hand, it's nice that Wonder Woman, with Lynda Carter at her mid-70s best, is coming to Me-TV starting Dec. 28th.

Oh My. What were the producers at WCCB thinking?

That video message from Cy N. Bahakel (died some years ago) standing in front of the glass blocks lit with purpish/red lighting and imposed inside a coffee table book is quite creepy. It's like a direct message about the afterlife & Cy is giving a personal anecdote.

At least they didn't follow it with an advert for Supernatural. LOL

That is aired at the request of the owner. smile.gif Her name is on the front of the building. wink.gif

Ahh. I guess the producers had no choice then to air the garish video as I know first hand what it's like to argue with the boss.

I saw the WJZY internet cast the first night. It wasn't really a cast just a meet and great with some reports thrown in. There was a lot of gesturing in front of a large touch screen monitor that I don't think will go over that well with viewers. It looks very clumsy. One of the digital journalists did a report using video from her iPhone. I'm not sure how well iPhone video will look on your basic big HD TV set. It looks like as a news show it's going to be something a little different. I have a feeling they will try some things at first and then just settle down and do a standard newscast.
Most of the FOX O&O stations have strong newscasts, so give it some time. I remember WTTG FOX-5 in DC having a very successful 10:00 news. But they are starting from scratch here, so still in the development stages. And the WJZY GM came from WGHP FOX-8 in Greensboro, and they produce a very good newscast. So there should be some good background and experience to build upon.

Coverage of the chicken wars continues on WBTV tonight at 6, as the crowds continue following the new Popeyes opening. Just saw the promo. But I'm just glad Charlotte finally got a Popeyes again, as they are in most major markets. Now just bring back a Big Boy and a Roy Rogers. Jerry Richardson and Hugh McColl, what about it?
They will have to do a little expanding as I don't care to drive to Wilkenson Blvd for some franchise chicken. I remember when Popeyes was here before and I didn't think it was anything spectacular. If you go over there, the BBQ King Drive In would be a lot better & interesting place to eat. (though I prefer South 21) In terms of new places I'd rather see an In-N-Out Burger in Charlotte.

Yes BBQ King and South 21 are local landmarks that I do appreciate. And Price's Chicken Coop. And I remember the old Shoney's Big Boy. They still have Bob's Big Boy in California and Frisch's Big Boy in Kentucky and Ohio. Also Michigan. In-N-Out is mainly West coast but now in Texas. But I mention Popeyes because it has been covered on the TV news on WBTV, so as to attempt to stay on topic.
Indeed. "News" resources devoted to fried chicken is certainly preferable to the 2 straight week pandering to lovers of Nelson Mandela as if it was the most important thing on the planet Earth.
Well there are 2 newsworthy aspects to the Popeyes story. From the business angle, they are a direct competitor to Charlotte based Bojangle's in the spicy chicken segment of the fast food market. And from a traffic and crowd control standpoint, they have had to hire extra police to direct traffic and handle congestion.
You might have a point about a story if they actually went to Bojangles to see if they had any comment on the matter. On the other hand, traffic comes to a dead stop on I-77 most days. I'd rather hear them talk about that instead of a few inconvenience fried chicken buyers on on Wilkenson Blvd. There's better fried chicken across the street at the gas station.

They have also tried really really hard for several days to drum up a false controversy over a local state senator's personal comments about Obamacare.

Someone said on the cord-cutters forum that it's really newsertainment.

Edit: I will say the 7pm broadcast on wBTV with the Carolina Camera is a lot better & interesting than what they show at 6pm.

There is an I Love Lucy classic Christmas episode on WBTV/CBS tonight, as well as the classic grape smashing episode. 8pm. They have been digitally remastered and colorized for the special holiday presentation.
I agree, I am glad they brought back the Carolina Camera feature on WBTV. Although they keep showing this dog playing the piano all day which is not exactly hard news. But they have to add the infotainment as you say.
