my xbox won't read CD-R's? but my brother's does

I just got a new xbox for x-mas and tried downloading a burned CD-R of music onto my xbox and I get a message saying "your xbox can't recognize this disc. make sure it's an xbox game, dvd movie, or audio cd. also check to see if the disc is dirty or damaged. remove the disc to continue." But we tried the same disc in my brother in law's xbox and it reads the disc fine. This really is annoying considering I download most my cd's off of itunes, I don't purchase cd's in the store. What can I do to fix this? does this have to do with different drive manufacturers? my brother's xbox has the two holes in the tray and mine does not. is the drive the problem or something else?

UPDATE: My xbox did download music off a store bought cd I have, just not any CD-R I try.

He may have a newer build of the X-box. The original boxes had Thompson DVD drives and some of the newer ones have Samsung drives which read CDR. You can take out your current dvd drive and replace it with one of the newer ones. You can order the drive off of e-bay. I guess i could always bring my xbox back to the store and claim it's Defective and get another one but no garentee it's one that will read cd-r's? Could I call customer support and have them replace my xbox with one that reads cd-r's?

Most Xbox consoles that do not have the Samsung dvd rom drive will read cd-rw when properly burned ;) .

Try a CD-RW. That will work. Just not CD-R. Don't ask me why.

the kind of media the xbox will read depends on the kind of drive in it, there are several different dvd drives that have been used in the xboxs.... such as samsung, phillips, thompson, and i think one more newer one...
