50 & 51 differences

There was a post somewhere outlining the differences between the 50 and 51's where it was stated that the 50 would give a downresed S-video feed. Without my trying to dig thru an hours worth of posts can someone tell me if it will also give a straight composite video feed as well on what would normally be HD programming?

I need to loan a system to a neighbor to record HD for me while I am out of the country this winter and at present he has a big zenith projector that was near state of the art 10 years ago but has nothing other than a composite feed. :/

I have my 51 in my rack and its difficult to pull it all out and spend hours trying this out on my D-ILA.

Someone in the know will have an answer that would save me a lot of work.

Thanks a lot

Larry,
The DST 50 has both composite and S-video outputs, in addition to the HD component outputs. I use the composite out to drive an 8" monitor-this is much more convenient that turning on a front projector every time I want to record or monitor.
You are lucky to have a neighbor who will record for you.

Larry -

I've used both a 50 & 51 to output composite. The 50 does simultaneous output through its component, composite & S-video connections (the latter 2 downrezed, of course). On the 51, you have to select either component or composite output (no S-video at all) using a back-panel switch.

Like Chazz, I like to be able to preview material on a small monitor (while recording or to cue up for playback), so I find the 51 doesn't suit my needs (& will probably sell or trade it).

Hope this helps.

Yes Peter it does...and thanks!

I still need to hook up the 50 and see if I am blessed with sparklies or not. Then decide which one I can loan my neighbor assuming 1. We don't have any trees in the way of the available dish mounting site 2. He has space in his HT room to put the equipment. He already has big dish for his regular viewing and has "no use" for ST or HBO. What he wants he has been buying on DVD. So, it will indeed be a favor he will be doing me! I will only be sticking up one dish for HD. Hummm...wonder now if that could be a problem.
