Don't get me wrong this HD-DVD war pretty much sucks for a lot of reasons but it could be a blessing in a way. It could force the studios on each side to release the great movies first. Meaning with standard DVD they could hold off on big titles because there was no competition but now with one format competting for leverage they will want the biggest best movies out first and right away. I see Braveheart is one of the first HD-DVDs to be announced.Remeber how long it took to get that one? We'll just have to wait and see.It maybe the only silver lining in this whole format war. J.H.

Launching the 'big' titles is exactly what they're gonna do. I mean, I want both Spidey and The Matrix, but since they're on opposing sides and one format cannot compete against itself....*crosses fingers for a BR/HD combi-player*

I have Spidey and The Matrix on DVHS and they look awesome! I say let the studios fight it out. I'll chill here with my 120 DVHS HD movies I record off of Cable for 3.50 a tape.

HD DVD will win the format war for the standalone DVD player market.

Blu-Ray will win in the PS3 and PC type markets.


From what I hear, blu-ray is very sensitive to scratches and HD DVD is more backward compatible with current DVDs.

My idea. A Dual Sided disc with both 1080i and 480p versions of the same movie.
That way you can take the disc to a friends and play it even if he doesn't have an HDTV.

From what I hear, the TDK coating on blu-ray is nearly indestructable and HD-DVD is the same as current ones.

LOTR=new line so should be HD-DVD, but it was not on the list of movies for release

That's the way I understand it as well. It'd be nice if people would do some reading before slamming a format for a false reason. ;)

Bit rate on Dish is going down rapidly, Pulp Fiction was at 8 Mb/s!

Broadcast HD is starting to look like utter crap, Blu Ray and H-DVD will be gorgeous in comparison.

I'm also looking forward to better sound. The 6.1 track on the EE version of the LOTR:ROTK is nice, but I think getting that (or even some kind of conversion to higher channel count) with even less compression and combined with HD image quality will be great.

This is a shame and certainly bit starvation is a big big issue on Direct TV.

Actually, broadcast is still generally good, DBS on the other hand...
