Best "old classic movie (B/W, 4:3)" DVD

Yeah, I've done the "oh wow"s like everybody else over the Toy Story, and the Hollow Man picture quality, and Yep, I've had the people in the condo next door mistake spaceship noise in ID4 for an earthquake, but.......

What really marvels me is the old movies that are restored so wonderfully. The best one I've seen is Casablanca. We're not talking about the movie itself, but more the quality of the transfer. What Oldie Goldies have you found to be of that kind of quality on DVD?

So far Alan, the DVD age hasn't done justice to the old movies. I watch most of the old movies on LD. Criterion has done wonders with THE THIRD MAN though. It has very cool extras too. There's a section that shows you damaged spots on the print they used, and then it shows fixed. I think they said they did 22,000 repairs. Best wishes!

Hmmmm. Casablanca does look great. I would nominate The Passion of Joan of Arc, a silent film from 1928 and one of the best films ever made, in my not so humble opinion. It's from The Criterion Collection and it looks great for a film of it's age.

I agree completely with your suggestion, Larry. I must add that watching this film with the choral & orchestral work composed by Richard Einhorn is a mesmerizing experience.
