"occurencies are few and far between"
Whaaa? ... this comparison has been going on for over two years in forums, magazines, and home theater rooms.

"often anecdotal"
Uh, no. "Widescreen Review," "The Perfect Vision," "Stereophile Guide to HT," to name a few.

"usially (sic) result of a different master"
Nope, again. Many, many DVD's have used the same master tapes - audio as well as video - that were used for laserdisc. And even if a different master were used, wouldn't newer technology suggest the opportunity for better audio, not worse?

PCM RULES! (As long as we can't have analog. )
