Just saw "Battle Royale" for the first time, and I'm not really sure what to think of it. I'm left wondering what Fukasaku was trying to say with this film. I expected some kind of indictment of Japanese society and what it has become. The movie comes off more as feeding into the violent nature of some people (especially Jr. High students).

Was this film made simply to create controversy? Though the main characters don't really end up killing very much (I don't recall Nori killing anyone unless she wounds Kawada at the end) they seem to end up not trusting adults at all anymore and just run away. The film probably would have seemed less cheesy at the end if the voice over about the knife had been eliminated.

I'm anxious to hear what others think about this film.
