"Manhunter" outstanding transfer (?)

I finally saw Manhunter (the first Hannibal Lechter movie), after so many years of forgetting to watch it. Anyhow, I thought the movie was good, but was more impressed by the video quality and color. (this hobby is getting a little sick, but that's another topic)

It was a THX-mastered disc...the movie was released in 1986. There was a calibration (audio and video) test program included also. This DVD looked as much like film to me as anything I've watched.

Is this considered a "reference" disc, like Fifth Element, etc.?

You obviously have the non-Special Edition, which is an excellent transfer, and with 5.1 sound.

The Special Edition, however, gets you a lousy transfer, with a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. But you do get to watch a silly extra scene of the detective meeting the people who never got killed.

I bought both.

that must be...i only had cast bios and the trailer.
an odd thing: on the cast bios, there was a picture of Dennis Farina, but no bio info <??>

speaking of him....remember that TV series "Crime Story?"..."Runaway" by Del Shannon..(wow!!)
wish that was out on DVD...cult classic.

Okay, I'm confused, Nicholas. You state that you bought both the standard release of "Manhunter" and the special edition - actually, it's a limited edition - because the quality of the latter is poor. However, the LE includes two discs, and the first one is identical to the DVD found in the standard release. Yes, the quality of the "director's cut" found on DVD 2 is abysmal, but one cannot purchase that copy on its own - you have to get it along with the standard release...
