I did get my Buffalo LinkTheater (BLT) late Tuesday afternoon, and was able to play with it for about an hour prior to leaving on a business trip to Denver. I almost packed it my suitcase
Here's my quick synopsis:
I unboxed it, and was fairly impressed with the packing materials and accessories... and even the manual.
I installed the BLT software on my main PC (can't wait to get the Buffalo TeraStation so I don't have to deal with my PC being always operational!) which was fairly painless and straightforward.
I decided to use it downstairs instead of my upstairs master bedroom, because I haven't pulled a Cat5 Ethernet drop there yet , and my wireless (Cisco 1200 a/b/g AP) is set for WPA and the BLT only supports WEP currently. I connected it via S-Video and Component for video to my Samsung 46"DLP, and optical audio to my Denon 1804.
When I powered on, I had to view it over S-Video first, and once I enabled "HD Browser mode" in the setup screen and hit the TV Mode button on the remote a few times, I was able to view the BLT via the component connection at 720p (1080i worked too, but flickered a bit too much for my taste, and the Sammy DLP is native 720p).
I was then able to select my PC from the home screen, and then veiwed a few of my photos, listened to some MP3's, and played back some DivxHD sample content ("SharkTale" and "Madagascar"). The image was fantastic, the framerate perfect, no audio sync problems or anything!
I then played Starwars Episode II DVD. Again, image quality and audio was great. However, when fast-forwarding through some scenes, and then hitting play, the audio became all garbled. Once I stopped and then played again, there was no problem. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I haven't had time to test it again yet.
So far, I am really happy with the unit. After I get the TeraStation, I'll probably buy a couple more LinkTheater units for the other rooms.
A couple questions:
1. Does anyone have any details on the operation and features of the USB Tuners for the Terastation? Will the LinkTheater be able to "tune" live content from the tuners, like a Windows Media Center 2005 Extender functions ?
2. Windows Media Connect. How do you configure that to serve content to the BLT? I downloaded the app a couple weeks ago, but can't find much documentation regarding it.
