Kurosawa's Ran: Any chance of a new dvd transfer?

This has been probably been asked before, but is there any chance that Criterion or anyone else will be doing a new transfer of "Ran".

I saw it for the first time at home last week and the story was absolutely incredible. The dvd print...sucked. Colors were washed out and the picture soft. And what is up with the letterbox bars being so out of whack?

A real shame. It deserves much better

I read somewhere, possibly at a studio chat at the HTF, that Anchor Bay is planning on releasing a new dvd of "Ran". Complete with new anamorphic transfer. They said they hoped to get it out sometime in 2002.

REALLY??? This is the best news I've heard in weeks. I hope it is true. I know that Winstar/Fox Lorber rereleased it to theaters late last year, so I assumed that if anyone did a new DVD it would be them (yuck).

As for why the picture is up higher on the old release, that was done sometimes to leave more room for subtitles. The master used for that DVD is the same one they used for their old LD release.
