Many Q owners have had multiple OB replacement failures and I don't recall anyone thinking Sony has done anything to improve on the original design.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but this is a raw nerve for a lot of Q owners; I would have at least wanted to hear from Sony that something just couldn't be done but getting any kind of technical opinion from Sony has been elusive, to say the least.

Mute point now
Sony doesn't replace the OB any longer and if could buy a new OB the last time I checked the cost was $5000.00.
Want to spend $5000.00 on a new OB with possibly the old design problems ?

The replacement was a genuine Sony part, and it looked different in some ways. The tech at the time gave me the same story, i.e. that it shouldn't fail anytime soon compared to the first version. So far, he's been right, although I do believe that it will still fail, someday.

I'd like to see those pictures if you still have them.

I don't believe I stated that the Q's optical block had been changed, nor did I mean to suggest that the Q's optical block had been improved. Yes, I am a lowly XBR1 owner, but thought that it might be of interest that the XBR's optical block had undergone changes over time. Whether the changes are substantive or cosmetic I do not know, I only know what the tech told me at the time. Perhaps this optical block is more akin to the Q's original design, thus it's apparent increased longevity compared to v.1?

Sorry to strike some ephemeral nerve, it wasn't intended. And, for what it's worth, I believe Sony replacing all our sets is evidence enough that nothing could have been done. Whether Sony will admit it on paper or not is somewhat moot, at this point.

Here you go:

V.1:

V.2:

Please do note that I make no claims as to the optical blocks shown in the images, only that the two parts are not identical in appearance.

One of the issues is there were many, many more XBR1's manufactured than Q006's. If the OB for the XBR1 was corrected or bettered in some fashion, that does not mean the Q006 -- which most agree has different optics -- was modified or fixed. Although, everyone on this thread would be elated if that was true.

Like I said, sorry to have implied that; as above, it wasn't my intention. For those of you interested, here is the other side:

Any chance Sony will do anything for my 70" that is green. I bought it 5 years ago. Please excuse if this is a redundant question. Thanks guys.

Look back over the past two months of this thread and you will see a step-by step procedure. Pls let us know if Sony is still offering a "free" rplacement 60XBR900 to Q owners>

Thanks I just sent a Email to Sony care, I was told to use the Facebook reference.

It's all good, guys. It is apparent that the state of the Q is such that when the OB fails, for now Sony's offering a replacement flat panel seems to be the best option.

That is unless thestewman gets anywhere with a donor OB. I still think most Q owners would be happy to pay a few hundred bucks for a refurbished/rebuilt OB that would give us another 2-4 years. With a bulb or two, that's a great Q picture and by then our options in the 70"+ LED (or 80-90" Laservue?) market should be pretty viable.

HAs anyone ever posted pics of a Q's optical block to see how different it actually is? Just curious...

Hi Seth

Sent you 2 Private messages and did not hear from you so I decided to post my message on the forum.

Just checking to see if you started removing the OB from your set ?

Also wanted to hear from you on the price and when it will be available to ship to me.

Thanks for everyone who helped me discover that my LED flashing was a Lamp Drive Error. Now I am trying to find anyplace that might be selling that part, the diagram is kind of confusing, but I think the part number is 1-725-513-11, does anyone have the slightest idea where I might be able to purchase this part? I have been running searches online without any luck.

Thanks for any and all help!

Best bet is to make an appeal on this thread for someone about to scrap their Q. Probably going to be a few of these, now.

Thanks guys so much for the information!! So, how do you purchase from the Sony Service Department, do you have to become a certified vendor, if so, is there anyone out there that would help me out, if not, what do I need to do? Thanks again, you guys on this forum are really awesome! I have been on many different forums, but none of them have been so responsive as this one!!!

Ok!!! Follow me. Try adding one to your cart then register as a new user.
Maybe should put in Inzomnyac TV as a company name. Then add the part to your cart and go from there.
Worse thing might be you have to contact a local tv repair shop and have him order it.
By the way the selling price is down to $169.00 US

A family with a flawed child we are all trying to find ways to help blossom as fully as possible. Amazing we are now moving on to repairing just about everything. What can a band of ragtag misfits do to correct an error that Sony with all of its resources clearly found too challenging? Apparently a lot if Stewman's expertise is anything to go by.

While I'm online daily checking out other A/V and car forums, this is the only one where I will post. Since the beginning we have all been respectful of each other, even with OTs, and even before we had a common rallying point when our OBs started failing. Maybe it's because we are a more "mature" bunch.

Is it just me or does this anti class action decision mean that every item we buy will come with a shrink wrap contract (you open it you agree to it) that says we have to abide by binding arbitration?

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/n...tion-suits.ars

As long as they rule that is legal then poof never another class action suit (and if they want to go further I believe they have been gutting the first sale doctrine as well so merely stick no resale in there too and no more used anything websites).
seems that way to me. We now live in a corporatocracy, based on several recent Supreme Court decisions.

Hey guys! I've been gone a long time... several years since my last post. I logged back on a few days ago to see if there was any expert advice to help my ailing Q only to read to my dismay of all the Q problems out there. My Q does not have the yellow or green blob as I have seen displayed after seraching hundreds of posts, but my grayscale has washed out my screen to the point where I see no "Blacks" at all. All color is very faint. I've tried changing the bulb, adjusting settings all to no avail. I know this has undoubtedly been discussed to death but after hours of searching I can't find a definitive description that describes my symptoms as OB failure. It's tough to find a search when it's all one 15000 post thread. Looks like I missed alot. I did not, "opt out" of the classaction suit because I never knew it existed. Does my brief description of problems sound familiar to anyone? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
tfire: Sounds like a new kind of failure to me. At least, it has not been discussed on this forum, before. Since the yellow blob has generally been attributed to burning of the blue polarizing filter, your problem might be burning of two, or all, of the polarizing filters. In that case, it is an OB failure and you may be able to get Sony to make an offer. If you can pursue it by the facebook route, so much the better. But, you may have to incur the expense of a service call from an "authorized' service center and their diagnosis, since your failure mode apears to be unique.
Thanks Ted! I'll start the process tomorrow. I really appreciate your help.
Thanks again!

Ted, this was exactly my failure mode and I was told that the bad gray scale and washed out color (that I had) was another form of the OB failure!
