Mac and 1080i

I have an HDTV that only accepts 1080i over component and will not accept 720p. Is there any option for a Mac. On windoz they have the ATi component adapter, but that is not available for a Mac. I can convert the VGA signal to Component with various black boxes, but they just convert the signal unchanged. The Mac would still need to output a 1080i signal. I have played with SwitchResX and it does not seem to do interlaced signals. I am begining to think there is no option. Or am I missing something. Would 1920 x 540p at 60Hz be the same thing? What would happen to the aspect ratio? Would it be easier to drop $4.5K on a new display?

I really want my iTunes music and iPhoto slide shows in HDTV...

You are going to want 540p if you are goign to do any desktop work at all. I think most crt based tv's work fairly well with something like 720x480. Start with that. You may want to look at the powerstrip timings that people with your same television are using.
