A Bug's Life, Regular vs Collector Edition. Are They Both Anamorphic?

I bought the collector's edition because it says anamorphic on the box, however, when I compared it to the original issue I could not see any difference on my Sony 36XBR400 TV.

Is the original issue also anamorphic without being mentioned, or my TV is too small to see any difference. BTW the DVD is properly setup to to 4:3 letterbox.

I am pretty sure the original issue was not anamorphic, but not 100% positive.

The first R1 version was not 16x9.

Actually, this is the incorrect setting for watching "Anamorphic" DVDs. Your television has a feature called Enhanced 16:9 Mode (V-compression) which let's you compress anamorphically enhanced DVDs to fill the 16:9 area of your TV's tube face. This allows you to set your DVD player to 16:9 output.

BTW, the Collector's Edition of A Bug's Life is the only Anamorphic DVD version of this movie. Both the original release and the Gold Edition of A Bug's Life are non-anamorphic.

Something must be setup wrong as I owned the original A Bug's Life and replaced it with the CE version. The difference between the two is quite apparent.

Both the non-anamorphic and anamorphic transfers are very well done. If you are viewing on a 4:3 direct view monitor, I doubt you will see much difference considering the nature of the animation, despite having 16:9 formating on your display. Generally, animation has a more finite level of resolution than live action films. So, the improvement afforded by the anamorphic transfer will be most obvious on a 16:9 display or FP.

The collector's edition is the only one with the new 16x9 enhanced widescreen 2.40:1 transfer. Get that one. Both the original and Gold Edition discs have the exact same non-anamorphic transfer.

Just a little FYI - the Auto setting for v-compression (16x9 mode) on the XBR400 does not function if you are using component inputs. It only works on the S-video inputs, but even then not every time. I usually just adjust the setting manually depending on wether I'm watching an anamorphic DVD or not.

Thanks for all the answers. I should note that the 16x9 Anamorphic setting on my TV is set to Auto, which means that it should detect the Enhanced mode automatically.

I guess my 36" is too small to show much of a difference, especially for a computer-generated Animation.

However, when I compared the Basic Instinct movies there was a huge difference in the Anamorphic vs the regular edition.
