Some good DTS CDs or DVD-Audio???

I find it hard to find any good reviews on DTS-CDs or DVD-audio. I am looking for reviews that go into the 5.1 aspect of the re-mastering rather than "they liked the singer" type of review.

I own The Eagles:Hell Freezes over DVD, Boyz II Men II DTS-CD, AI DVD-A, Marvin Gaye DTS-CD, Santana DVD, and a demo DVD-A from JVC.

I was impressed with the demo disc, but not impressed with the AI soundtrack. I was also impressed with The Eagles and very impressed with the Boyz II Men CD. The latter was a little less natural but really shows off what 5.1 music can do. The bass and voices were perfect and the last song, "Yesterday" (originally by the Beetles) made it sound like you were in the middle of their quartet!

If anyone has any recommondions for good DVD-A, DTS-CDs, or a review site please respond.

The new Boz Scaggs DVD-A is being packaged in a little book cover, sorta', thang. It also includes a copy of the CD! The CD alone was $17.99. The package with both cost me $21.99. I've only listend to the CD so far. If you like jazz jump on the BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB DVD-A. Best wishes!

Here are three good "show-off" 5.1 mixes:

Alan Parson's Project - On Air (DTS CD)
Blue Man Group (this is a DVD-A, but has DTS on the other side)
Cincinnati Pops:Big Picture (DTS CD)

1. Big Phat Band
2. Blue man Group
3. Studio Voodoo

DVD Audio:
Steely Dan: Two Against Nature (the best! full range thru all speakers)
Steve Stevens: Flamingo a go go (I was surprised how much I liked this one)
The Gluey Brothers: Sniff for the Elders (pretty cool modern rock)
DTS CDs:
Sting: Ten Summoners' Tales (IMHO, his best solo work)
Don Henley: End of the Innocence (great CD)
Police: Greatest Hits (very cool 5.1 remixes, tastefully done)
Santana: Abraxas (I was stunned how absolutely clear the sound was given the age of the material)

the Floyd discs aren't 5.1... they use the quad mixes and are thus 4.0.

The Steve Stevens title is Flamenco a Go Go

AIX Records will be coming out with some absolutely killer titles -- on their demo disc one track is solo piano, which is captured with 5 microphones set in various locations near the soundboard, a very interesting perspective! Chesky's Bucky Pizzarelli Swing Live is also seriously good.

I'll list titles from AIX as I buy them.

For DVD-A there's only a couple that haven't been mentioned that I enjoy:
Joni Mitchell Both Sides Now
Glen Phillips Abulum

I'm still trying to figure out if I like Telarc's Celebrating the music of Weather Report

For DTS CDs, I think all my faves were already mentioned!

Thanks all for all the input. I think I might start with the Blue Man Group and Steely Dan for DVD-A and The Police and for DTS CD.

Do any of you know of a good review site for DVD-A or DTS CDs? The only one I have found useful is AudioRevolution.com, but they do not review a lot of titles.

I have bought a decent amount of dvd audio disc and have one piece of advice. Buy only the type of music you like. My favorite one is the Fleetwood Mac Rumors dvd-a.

I listened to the Boz Scaggs DIG DVD-A and I thought it was well-done. They were subtle about using the sides, which I like. It's a pretty good album too. I like the concept here of having the CD and DVD-A packaged together, as long as they don't ask for too much dinero for it. Best wishes!

The Doors LA Woman DVD-A -- Pretty good 5.1 considering the age of the material, but not the best
Telar 1812 Overture DVD-A -- Not that great, this is a brand new DSD (SACD) recording, and I think something was lost in the DSD-PCM conversion.

My favorite discs so far are:
Blue Man Group DVD-A
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours DVD-A
Santana Abraxas DTS CD
Moody Blues Days of Future Past DTS CD

I also enjoy (but not as much):
Police: Every Breath... DTS CD
Doors LA Woman DVD-A

My favorite DVD-A discs are "Brain Salad Surgery"-ELP and "Toy Matinee"-Toy Matinee. Toy Matinee is an undiscovered gem. It has also been released in DTS.

I got a copy of Santana's "Abraxis" DTS and was surprised to hear different versions of the songs! It was a 4.0 mix from a quad master, but phrasings were really different from the stereo release! Anyone else notice that?

For those of you looking for the Pink Floyd dts cds info, I have a couple of suggestions.
1. do a search on google or whatever http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
- the problem with this is that you'll probably be ripped off by less reputable people and it's riskier than I would go for.

2. join the "echoes" mailing list here and ask someone for a trade (usually people will trade you for a live show or whatever, but a lot of them also trade for blank cd-r's (which is what I did with a friend of mine who had them)). Just ask nicely for info and I'm sure someone on the list will accomodate your needs. (I'm not affiliated with echoes btw).

And if you really cant go through either of those two, I guess you could try emailing me, but seeing as i'm a poor college student it would probably take longer for me to mail you the copies than someone else http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif
