Denon AVR-5805 Arrived..... - Page 43

Dunno how good it is, but Pioneer came out with this beast not too long ago. A bit more up to date, but likely inspired by the 5805.

Good news about the mk2 update still being available. Was well worth it to me too.

Agreed but denon split the line into the 5308 and the avp/poa

So the followup of the 5808 is the :

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3922.asp

and the

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3921.asp

as a owner of both i can say denon made a followup for the 5808 to make us proud .

Daniel.

Haha! Let's hope Fedex/UPS will not bang it up on its way back then!

I am wondering if there is any indication from Denon of a forthcoming upgrade to Denon Link 4 for either the 5805 or 4806?

Thanks

I doubt it.
The possibility of anymore upgrades for those, is probably not very good. And most likely even no possibility at all, if it were to require any kind of hardware change.
Yay! Just got my upgraded beast delivered. No scratches. Love the fact that I can control it through my laptop now. Makes setup a bit easier.

Denon really did a great job. Totally clean. Got it back in a much better box than compared to the original packaging. Besides the upgrade: top grill and sides got replaced too. I think the lcd display got replacd too - not 100% sure. They seem to have spent quite some work on it though. Looks like new. Definitively can confirm that they still perform the upgrade. Pleasently surprised that shipping back to me was included in the $1000!

On issue that I am having while I am setting it up: In the Audissey-Auto-Calibration it will not recognize my center as large. It is a B&W Nautilus HTM1. Did not have that issue before the upgrade. I don't want the sub kicking in on normal center channel signals. I can select it as large in the speaker config - that is not the issue. Just when I run the auto-config it will show up as small in the config check menue. The EQ for the Center for Audyssey looks funky to me too - 125 and 250 bars are maxed out! Ugh. Any ideas?
(Going to listen to some material now - maybe the machine is right - but I doubt it.)

Any help is appreciated!
What other speakers are you using?

(I have previous to current generation 5.1 B&W speaker set (803s in front, HTM1 in center, 804s in rear, 15" sub), all bi-amped. HTM1 has ended up on the floor, with tiptoes propping it up so it's pointed in approx same direction as the other speakers.

Think (have to check) I've settled on running them all small, crossover at standard 80Hz; also add THX to get a better sounding (to me) treble and bass mix. I've been hesitant to recalibrate (put in real curtains last year) because right now it sounds really good (and my pre-mk2 calibrations were usually pretty bad)).

Anyway, enjoy

LF and RF: My good old B&W 802 Matrix Series 2
LB and RB: B&W 805 Nautilus
Center: B&W Nautilus HTM1
Sub: B&W ASW 2500

Interesting that you are running your speakers on small. Been listening for a few hours. Sounds great! Guess I am happy and not going to worry about the crossover from the Center to the sub. Sounds much better than before the upgrade. At least on movies and music videos. But that's what this system is for !

Been pulling my hair (whats left of it)- noy able to route my old PAL DVD player (Component) through HDMI to the screen . NTSC seems to be working. Not sure where the issue lies at the moment might be the Plasma (Panny 65V10) might be the scaler. New plasma and receiver upgrade are messing me up. Introduced 2 new variables at the same time - trying to figure out what is going on. Maybe the Panny simply can't do PAL. Will figure it out or run a component cable and see what happens.
While hooking up the DVD player in question directly to the screen it became obvious that the Panny 65V10 can't display PAL signals. Ugh! Never was an issue with the projectors I used to own. Even the old rear projector Sony-TV in the living room can do this... Guess that's how they save a few bucks.

Now - the real question: Is the scaler of the AVR 5805 capable of doing this (PAL to NTSC conversion) in some configuration? I have to be honest the video conversion table in the manual is confusing the heck out of me.

Doubtful. Your player most likely has to do the conversion. (Mine does.) Never had a TV set that took PAL input.

(And frankly, I wouldn't expect much out of the video processor in the 5805; possibly I tried it once, not even sure if it was working, never got back to it (I just let my TV take care of that sort of thing when it's needed; my disc players take care of it otherwise.)

Other option would be some type of external video processor (nothing I've ever dealt with). Or getting a current region-free DVD and/or Blu-Ray player that does the PAL to NTSC conversion for you.

Thanks so much. Wow! This got so easy. 10 years ago I felt like a criminal bringing a region free dvd player in from europe :-)! Now even Amazon carries a lot fo them for not much money. Thanks for the tip - just ordered a Pioneer Dv610av to watch my European stuff.

Love the sound of my upgraded AVR-5805. Totally happy camper again!

Hmmm. I have been surprised by the tolerance of region coding in the USA, which is usually at the forefront of consumer rights. In Australia, Sony lost a big court case against a company modifying play-stations (PS2's) to play games bought overseas. The court held that every person has a right to play their own legally purchased software and Sony would be engaging in unconscionable conduct to restrict the consumers enjoyment of their purchases, wherever they were bought. The Australian Consumer & Competition Commission has indicated its disapproval of region coding in general, and financed the case against Sony.

With PS3, Sony has made games region free, presumably as a result of the landmark case, but we are hoping there will be a court case for bluray mods. The betting is, neither Sony or anyone else will try to stop it in this country anyway. In most Asian countries, I don't think a region coded player was ever seriously marketed. ( they would never tolerate that kind of restrictive practice)

At the forefront of consumer rights? Would never have guessed...

Well maybe not - I guess I was referring to consumer achievements with the auto industry and "lemons" etc. But when it comes to software, movies & computer, the corporations seem to wield the power.

Does anyone still follow this thread? Haven't seen any new posts since January, but I have the 5805CI using Definitive Technology BP7000's for Front and other DefTech's all around in a 7.1ch setup and have some questions regarding Audyssey and also how "best" to get lossless audio codecs with this awesome beast! Anyone? Anyone?

No Audyssey expert (I ran it a (long) while back and ended up with pretty decent sound, have since changed furnishings and left it as is).

For lossless audio, your blu-ray player has to take care of that. I've been running a Panasonic DMP-BD35 and does just fine, 5.1 ch via LPCM (HDMI). Such players support 7.1 also, just make sure you set your player up to output PCM and disable secondary audio and whatever else may cause sound to end up coming out lossy, and you're more or less ready to go. 5805 does not support bitstreaming of lossless hi-def audio (its HDMI 1.1 doesn't have the bandwidth, and the receiver itself doesn't have hi-def audio decoders).

Oh, and aside from running with Audyssey, I also run with THX, and have my system set to basic configuration of all speakers small, subwoofer crossover at 80Hz.

Anyway, that's where I'm at these days. Kind of found something that works really well, and have gone with it. My biggest pain has been getting my subwoofer adjusted right over the years, just recently found some settings for it that seem to be working well for a change.

If you are referring to 2 channel - I simply use a laptop/ASIO/Optical connection to listen to music (flac files).

Another oddball question about the 5805MK2. I know that it can support 7.1 LPCM over HDMI, but, does anyone know if it can decode DSD over HDMI, say, when using a Sony SCD-XA5400ES SACD Player or other such player that outputs actual DSD over HDMI? Thanks in advance!

Why not get a DL4 denon based player many to be found for a good price and even better results since it will be a master-slave clock concept.

Daniel.

The 5805Mk2 predates DL4, but DL3 should be supported by any of the DL4 players (and any of the DL3-only players from the past). DL3 will give him the DSD link for SACDs that he is looking for (using Direct mode from my experience). In my (somewhat limited) experience, it sounds better than what comes over an HDMI/PCM link from an Oppo player.

DSD over HDMI is not supported by any flavor of the 5805.

Not certain, but possibly DSD might also be available via the IEEE 1394 digital interface, if your player has that option (which means some non-Denon players also).

Still loving this 6 year old receiver.

If anyone knows where I can buy a gently used MK2 or CI version, please let me know. Thanks much!

Still happy with my 5805 as well. GadgetGuruKen, you can buy b-stock and refurbished 5805s online at www.dakmart.com. They are authorized Denon retailers. They also have b-stock and refurbished 5308s.

Hit the mute button again.
The mute button does not fix the problem. I believe it has something to do with the different zones. But I have not been able to fix the problem.

Time to dig out the manual then.
If the power button is flashing that usually indicates a power fault, you can try unplugging it and letting it sit for ten MINUTES before plugging it back in. If the power light starts to flash again when you power it back up then it is probably time for you to contact Denon to have it looked at.

The power indicator flashing "green" means the AVR is in "MUTE" mode. Ensure the other Zones are OFF and see if the issue remains. If still no joy, then you may want to try resetting the microprocessor (see Owner's manual).
