Chicago, IL - WOW - Page 26

They charge $2.50 or so per month for the modem. The customer service person said that my modem could only go up to 10Mbps. So if I want 15Mbps they would have to get me a new one.

Though if the upload speed *did* get bumped to 1Mbps as you said, I might pay the extra cash to rent. How much extra do they charge you a month for that?

Is anyone with Digital Value getting Nat Geo HD, I heard it was moved to the regular HD Tier, but when I tried earlier today I was not getting it

I haven't called them. I too am in Naperville and have not got a bump yet. One thing I was wondering was how fast the upload would be for the 8 mbps tier. You just answered my question that I was wondering about.

Yes, both HDTV HD and Food HD were in the HD Pak. They have been moved to the regular HD tier. I believe WOW is lowering the price on the HD Pak to $7.99. This is what they should have done to begin with. Now it should only be $4.99 at the most. DirecTV has something like this where they offer HD Net Movies, MGM HD, Palladia HD and Smithsonian HD and its $4.99 for those channels. WOW is charging $7.99 for 5 extra channels.

Nat Geo should now be available in the regular HD tier. I would wait a day or two and if you don't have it then call up and ask.

Own my modem, and a phone call confirms that they won't upgrade my speed from 4 to 8 unless I rent a modem from WOW. Don't agree with the policy, but I'll live with it....for now. Out of curiousity, I asked about using a Scientific Atlantic 8300 HD DVR purchased from ebay (they run about $100 or less), and the person said it's not possible. Anyone have any thoughts/experience in this matter?

A lot of people have complained about not being able to get the internet speed with owned modems. You will need to lease one from WOW. As far as the HD box, it probably has different software on it.

I for one am very happy with Fox News HD. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Fox and Friends morning show was shot with hi def cameras. The PQ was fantastic. Maybe the big prime time shows will be as well - I'll find out tonight.

For non HD shows, they have a bunch of information where the pillar bars usually would be. Graphics are nice and sharp - big improvement over the 480i version.

With this being an election year, I'm like a pig in slop with Fox News HD - can't get enough of it.

I'm going to purchase the same model of modem WOW uses and see if I can get the speeds with that. I'll post here the results once I attempt it.

Cool, let us know. I still haven't received the higher speeds by the way. I am in Naperville and still stuck on 4 megs when I should be at 8 megs.

Hey guys, so Nat Geo HD is in the HD Pak still. In ALL other WOW markets they moved Nat Geo HD out of the HD Pak into the regular HD tier except for the Chicago market. This doesn't make any sense at all. In away its treating its Chicago customers unfairly.
Does anyone in Naperville or surrounding areas that had 4 meg internet have been boosted up to 8 yet? I still haven't seen the increase.
Not as of yet - hopefully someone will soon
post #762 of 894
This is really irritating me. I still don't have the speed increase.
That stinks that National Geographic HD isn't being added in Chicago, but I guess its not surprising. Cable companies have different channel lineups for different regions, just like they have different pricing for different regions. When I had Comcast I had a couple different channels in Schaumburg than people I knew in other Chicago suburbs and we had the same tier of service. And I knew people in other states that had Comcast and had several different channels than I did. Even a smaller company like WOW will have differences between regions based on the competition they face and their customer demand.

Got a couple questions for those with digital boxes. First, is there anyway to use captioning through the box? If I switch inputs (to standard cable), I'm able to view captioning yet when I'm going through the box nothing shows up. Secondly, is there a way to delete all the channels I don't receive? When I try to access the "Channels" menu while using the box, it's grayed out.

I would be proactive and call them. We had basic cable at a higher price than on the website apparently for some time. It was only when I called that they changed it. This is the reason I called in and got the 8 Mbps the morning of the package line change.

I know have the new internet speeds and I am loving it!

Yeah, its just kind of bad how they cheaped Chicago people out of this channel seeing as all their other markets have it.

I can't remember, but did you try press settings twice on the remote. There is a whole bunch of options listed and captioning is one of them. Perhaps under audio? I'm not sure. If I still had WOW I would check for you.
Matt, how did you get the speeds?

A simple reboot is all I needed. I got the higher speeds later than most people though. I rebooted several times Tuesday and Wednesday with no luck and then late Thursday afternoon I got the higher speeds when I rebooted.

Has anyone heard any rumors about WOW adding TBS HD in time for the NLDS games?
I would doubt it - they didn't do it last season, don't see any reason they would add it this season, but to answer your question, no haven't heard or read anything about them adding any more HD right now
post #771 of 894
Wow, these new speeds are great. On speedtest.net, I am getting 950-1000 kbps down, and 1.5 or so up. The new is pretty zippy, and my fileplanet downloads were cruising at around 950k/s.

This is something I was upset about last year. Had to settle to watch the Cubs on crappy ole analog. Luckily I am with DirecTV now. I am surprised WOW hasn't added this channel. So many people complained last year and WOW had a whole year to add this channel. Its inexcusable not to have TBS HD. Its such a simple HD channel too. Mostly everyone has this except for WOW. They are going to lose a few customers on this alone maybe.

Do you have the 8/1 speed?

Yeah, and it seems to be at least meeting, if not exceeding that.

I just noticed that Starz VOD offers HD titles. I can't say for certain, but I suspect this is a recent addition. I watched Meet the Robinson's with my kids - the PQ is great. Movies start instantly, and the compression is not too bad at all. Looks on par with the best broadcast HD IMO.

I called last night and the agent explained that they don't have a contract and it would be costly to add the channel.

This no TBS-HD thing kinda sucks :\\ Watching TBS for the first time in forever, because of baseball, makes me wish that we could watch some of their programming in HD.
Maybe WOW didn't add TBS HD because they already new the Cubs were going to get swept for the 2nd straight season. I can't believe how bad the Cubs played. This just sucks.
Now I am glad they didn't add it

Yeah, what a bummer. Cubs sucked it up again. They need to get rid of Soriano for sure or have him bat say 5th in the lineup.
Has anyone been noticing what seems to be higher latency now that we have the new speeds? I am definitely getting blazing downloads, but it feels like some of the pages that I was used to loading fairly quickly, now take a second or two to start loading, then snap right in.
