I was messing around with my Hughes E86 STB last night after reading a post about updated guide info on local OTA DTV channels. Sure enough my locals are now showing EPG info as well as the DirecTV channels.
Just for grins, I ran my receiver through a scan for digital channels. What a shock I was in for...
In addition to the one local VHF OTA DTV station I normally get (WTNH-DT 10), I was able to pull in 3 New York DTV stations (WPIX-DT 33, WNYW-DT 44 and WABC-DT 45), and even 1 DTV station from Philadelphia (WPVI-DT 64)!!!
I'm located in Northeast Connecticut so there must have been almost perfect atmospheric connections last night to be able to pick up those stations. I was absolutely amazed!! This is with a $25 RS VHF/UHF combo antenna hanging in my attic!! Some of these stations were coming in with signal strengths of 95-100% which is amazing considering the distance involved! I tried again this morning and sadly was unable to receive these stations.
This is semi-encouraging news, because I am considering putting up a rooftop UHF antenna from Antenna Performance Specialties, and if I have the possibility of bringing in stations from that far away with the antenna I have now, hopefully the better UHF antenna up higher will help some of my reception problems and offer me more choices when it comes to OTA DTV channels. Bring 'em on!!
